Abstract

The development of news about Covid-19 that hit almost the entire world, was conveyed massively by the mass media. The work process of journalists in reporting makes them vulnerable to infection. Photojournalists have to rack their brains to keep sending news. During the pandemic, female photojournalists experienced more obstacles and discrimination than before the pandemic. A strong patriarchal system gives rise to gender discrimination in the male-dominated photojournalist profession. This research is qualitative research with a critical paradigm. Researchers want to see the extent of discrimination against three female photojournalists in Indonesia during the pandemic. This research used qualitative methods, with semi-structured interviews, to explore the experiences of female photojournalists during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings of this study are the existence of double burden gender discrimination, maternal discrimination, and layoff for those who have high salaries (discrimination based on pay) from the media where they work.

Abstract

The novel Coming Home (Pulang) by Toha Mochtar has had five cover designs that have appeared in a span of 41 years. Chronologically, the five novels were published in 1958, 1962, 1967, 1972, and 1999. The focus of this research departs from these five cover illustrations which on one side become narrative representations in the novel. However, on the other hand it can be said to represent socio-political discourses from the era when they were composed. The method used in this study is a qualitative method through examining illustrations. To examine the illustration, representation and discourse approaches (concepts) are used. From the results of the analysis it can be seen that these historical factors and determinants can be interpreted as the cause of the differences in each cover design, and when examined chronologically, the five covers show a cultural and historical process, namely the meeting between peasant life and political history. The findings in this study also show that each cover, apart from being a narrative representation, also has its own story which can be dismantled through various critical analyses. Novel Pulang karya Toha Mochtar memiliki lima desain sampul yang muncul dalam rentang waktu 41 tahun. Secara kronologis, kelima novel tersebut terbit pada tahun 1958, 1962, 1967, 1972, dan 1999. Fokus penelitian ini bertolak dari kelima ilustrasi sampul ini yang di satu sisi menjadi representasi naratif dalam novel. Akan tetapi, di sisi lain dapat dikatakan sebagai representasi wacana sosial-politik dari zaman ketika mereka digubah. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif melalui pemeriksaan ilustrasi. Untuk memeriksa ilustrasi tersebut, digunakan pendekatan (konsep) representasi dan wacana. Dari hasil analisis terlihat bahwa faktor-faktor historis dan determinan tersebut dapat ditafsirkan sebagai penyebab adanya perbedaan di setiap desain sampul, dan jika diperiksa dalam perbandingan secara kronologis, kelima sampul tersebut menunjukkan sebuah proses kultural dan historis, yaitu pertemuan antara kehidupan petani dan sejarah politik. Temuan dalam penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa setiap sampul, selain menjadi representasi naratif, juga memiliki cerita masing-masing yang dapat dibongkar lewat berbagai analisis kritis.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the work of the 2016 Indonesian Press Photo Award Photo of the Year entitled "Tinjau Titik Api," using the "Three Visual Layers" theory. Photo of the Year 2016 was chosen because it has the advantage of good visual value and high news value, especially for people in the news. The three visual layers analysis includes optical, cultural, and photographic meaning. The optical aspect is for the non-blind eyes, the cultural aspect includes known visual appearances and unknown visual appearances, and the photographic aspect has a functional appearance, personal appearance, and subjective appearance. The research method is qualitative analysis because its implementation is based on visual analysis to find meaning from photos depicting three figures who are symbols of the strength of the Indonesian state, namely, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, and Chief of the Indonesian National Police General Badarudin Haiti, who is inspecting the location of forest and land fires, in Geronggong Village, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Data analysis involves: Scrutinizing relevant and irrelevant information, reducing data, compiling codes against findings data, and verifying codes as a reference for discussion and conclusion. The research results show that the 2016 Photo of the Year contains meaning that shows the Indonesian government's commitment to dealing with forest and land fires in Sumatra. The photo has advantages in terms of visual value which is reflected in the composition, depth of focus, and expression of the president, and in terms of news value, it is superior in terms of character value, as well as another advantage in the closeness of the photographer to the object of the event.

Abstract

This study explores independently published comics in Indonesia after 2010, which show differences from independent comics in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Contemporary independent comics distinguish themselves by positioning readers as patrons and the application of transmedia storytelling across platforms, especially related to film and music, and not for industrial purposes. The research questions presented are: what are transmedia storytelling practices in contemporary independent comics in Indonesia, and how is the context of creative freedom and control that underlies the production of printed comics presented through cross-media platforms? Using qualitative methodology, this study applies descriptive discourse analysis based on the visual culture framework, following Gillian Rose's methodological approach. The descriptive analysis focuses on the case study of transmedia storytelling "Pendekar Cyborg", an independently published comic series, which intersects with other media such as motion comics, animated music videos, film, and music. The findings show that contemporary Indonesian independent comics engage in canonical transmedia storytelling, in dimensions of spreadability, continuity, and multiplicity, while still reflecting the socio-political context. The work “Pendekar Cyborg” affirms creative freedom within an independent artistic community and expands narrative experiences through innovative, creator-driven transmedia strategies with community support. This research contributes to understanding how independent visual storytelling in Indonesia embraces transmedia formats to negotiate cultural meaning and audience engagement.

Abstract

This study investigates the narrative transformation of KKN di Desa Penari as it migrated across multiple media platforms, illustrating how local stories are reinterpreted within Indonesia’s hybrid digital ecosystem. Originating as a Twitter thread, the narrative evolved into novels, films, and user-generated content, reflecting the dynamic interplay between intertextuality, adaptation, remediation, and participatory culture. While previous studies have addressed digital folklore or single-medium adaptations, few have explored how a single narrative transforms holistically across platforms through both formal production and audience engagement. The purpose of this study was to analyze how KKN di Desa Penari was reshaped through cross-platform adaptation, cultural negotiation, and participatory practices. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with intertextual analysis, the research drew data from primary sources (Twitter thread, novel, film, memes, fan art, TikTok videos, YouTube commentary) and secondary literature. The findings reveal that each medium reconfigured the narrative in distinct ways: Twitter fostered fragmented, speculative storytelling; the novel embedded local moral codes; the film remediated the story into visual spectacle; and user-generated content extended the narrative through reinterpretation and cultural commentary. This study contributes to understanding how local narratives achieve longevity and cultural relevance through digital convergence and audience co-creation.

Zhang Yimou hidup di negeri komunis yang begitu tertutup semenjak Revolusi Kebudayaan 1966. Meski semenjak meninggalnya Mao Zedong pada 1976 yang disusul tersingkirnya Kelompok Empat, dengan Jiang Jing, istri Mao, sebagai tokoh sentral, negeri itu menjadi lebih terbuka, tetap saja dunia luar tak tahu banyak tentang apa yang berada di dalamnya - kecuali bahwa Deng Xiaoping pernah berkata "Mau kucing putih atau kucing belang, pokoknya bisa menang kap tikus. Abstract

Teknologi sinematografi tidaklah netral. Pertama, karena ia dilahirkan oleh suatu kepentingan, dan suatu kepentingan disepakati akan selalu ideologis; kedua, karena produk teknologi itu melahirkan teknik dalam sinematografi, yang akan dibaca sebagai teknik pendekatan untuk menangkap dan menerjemahkan realitas. Jika disebutkan bahwa teknologi sinematografi berada di antara teknik dan ideologi, dimaksudkan bahwa teknologi sinematografi itu di satu pihak memproduksi bahasa sinematografi, dan teknik di sini bisa dibaca sebagai cara berbahasa sekaligus bahwa kebutuhan berbahasa akan mengembangkan teknologi sinematografi itu; di lain pihak kebutuhan berbahasa itu merepresentasikan kepentingan dalam ideologi tertentu. Dengan hubungan yang timbal balik antara teknologi, teknik, dan ideologi diberlangsungkan proses budaya sinema, yang sekaligus juga akan menentukan keberadaannya secara sosial dan historis.

Abstract

Melihat film sebagai potensi bisnis, tidak bisa dilepaskan akan peran teknologi yang berkembang dan mengiringinya. Melalui campur tangan teknologi ini film diyakini akan terlihat lebih sensasional dan nampak begitu fantastis -spektakuler. Namun pemeran film juga menuntut statusnya dipertimbangkan sebagai faktor penentu juga bagi penciptaan spektakel tadi. Jadilah film sebagai ajang pertarungan ideologi dalam hegemoni wacana spektakel/, tempat memperebutkan identitas aktor-aktris film.

Abstract

Sebagai sebuah medium, film tergolong kompleks, sebab ia memiliki banyak elemen penentu di dalamnya. Elemen-elemen di dalam film tersebut sebenarnya dapat diperlakukan menggunakan variabel-variabel yang sangat fleksibel (nyaris tak berhingga). Sebelum mencapai kedudukannya sebagai pengantar pesan ataupun pembentuk makna, film tentulah melalui suatu proses yang meskipun kompleks namun bukan berarti tak terjabarkan. Dengan jalan menguraikan proses pembentukan makna tersebut artikel ini mengajak para pembaca untuk ikut mengamati tentang bagaimana beberapa varian dalam penyusunan variabel penentu makna seperti: types of shot, tata cahaya, angle, warna dsb . ternyata juga tak terlepas dari aspek-aspek ideologis, dimana segenap gagasan (baca: ideologi) dapat kita cermati telah dihadirkan melalui layar.
