Abstract

This community service program aims to boost speaking confidence and mastery of emotion-expression vocabulary among 20 participants aged 9-14 year olds in the Jatinegara Kaum public housing. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the two-day intervention (on 14–15 June 2025) blended student-centered learning, contextual teaching and learning, and communicative language teaching. Activities included an Inside Out audiovisual prompt, matching games, and role-plays targeting greetings, apologies, asking for opinions, encouragement, and expressing concern. Outcomes comprised a vocabulary/expression pre- and post-test, rubric-based role-play assessments, and a post-program survey. The analyses were descriptive and supplemented by qualitative classroom observations. Participants showed gains in recognizing and using target expressions in simple sentences. The most recalled more than five new lexical items and demonstrated improved lexical accuracy, fluency, and oral participation. Overall, the short communicative intervention appears feasible and promising for strengthening basic speaking readiness and thematic vocabulary in this setting; future studies should use multi-session designs with standardized measures and a comparison group to strengthen causal inference and track retention.

Abstract

The community service program aims to provide public speaking training to strengthen the character of children aged 9-12 and develop their speaking skills in English while boosting their confidence. By giving them opportunities to speak in public, the program hopes to help them build strong self-confidence, particularly in using the English language. The method used in this community service program is participatory observation to identify the skills gap that needs to be addressed in the participants, which is expected to provide solutions for improving their abilities. Additionally, this training employs pre-tests and post-tests to assess improvements in English language skills and surveys to gather feedback from participants. The results of the activity demonstrate effectiveness in enhancing participants' communication and public speaking abilities, as well as improving their English language skills, as evidenced by the pre-test and post-test results.

Abstract: This community service project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Language and Arts, Jakarta State University, and the Cisaat Village Government, initiated by the English Literature Program in collaboration with the Visual Arts Education Program of the Faculty of Language and Arts, Jakarta State University. This community service project was conducted in Cilimus Village with the aim of enhancing participants' writing skills and their understanding of their own culture through a cultural knowledge strategy via creative writing training based on local wisdom, employing the technique of mind mapping. The subjects of this community service project were 17 students from Junior High School and Senior High School. The mind mapping technique was applied as a tool to organize ideas from Cilimus Village into creative writing pieces. The evaluation of the writing was carried out using a narrative writing rubric based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) W.7.3, assessing students' abilities in effective and comprehensive narrative writing. The evaluation results showed an increase in the number of participants who achieved a minimum score of 20 points, totaling 80% of all participants. The outcome of this community service project is creative writing by the young generation of Cilimus Village that reflects the cultural values and uniqueness of Cilimus Village, contributing to the preservation and promotion of Cilimus Village's cultural heritage.
