Abstract

To address the growing demand for globally competent and sustainability-oriented leadership, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Indonesia, and Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand, implemented a collaborative community service program integrating intercultural exchange, leadership training, and civic engagement. The initiative aimed to strengthen cross-cultural understanding, leadership capacity, and sustainable practices among students and faculty. The program consisted of EDUBRIDGE in Pattani, RISE Initiatives in Hatyai, and a Building Leaders Seminar in Jakarta, which consolidated and reflected on the Thailand-based activities. Grounded in Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb, 1984) and Transformational Leadership Theory (Burns, 1978), the program employed interactive workshops, design thinking, leadership simulations, and immersive English camps. Six UNJ delegates collaborated with PSU counterparts to design and facilitate activities. Outcomes included improved leadership competence, intercultural communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills, alongside increased confidence in applying leadership concepts to community challenges. The program also strengthened institutional partnerships and international engagement. Overall, this initiative demonstrates the transformative potential of sustained international academic collaboration in cultivating sustainable leadership.

Abstract

The division of roles and distinctions between the traits of men and women are products of the construction of gender in a deeply ingrained society. Because each sex can exhibit masculine or feminine traits depending on the circumstance and condition, these roles and characteristics cannot be used as a binary opposition in practice. The short story "Sinar Mata Ibu" features gender roles that are prevalent in our culture. The text of this short story, however, contains resistance that subverts gender construction when viewed from a feminist perspective. This narrative text makes the claim that both women and men can exhibit both feminine and masculine traits. Keywords: gender construction, feminism, short stories, narrative texts

Abstract

This community service program aims to boost speaking confidence and mastery of emotion-expression vocabulary among 20 participants aged 9-14 year olds in the Jatinegara Kaum public housing. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the two-day intervention (on 14–15 June 2025) blended student-centered learning, contextual teaching and learning, and communicative language teaching. Activities included an Inside Out audiovisual prompt, matching games, and role-plays targeting greetings, apologies, asking for opinions, encouragement, and expressing concern. Outcomes comprised a vocabulary/expression pre- and post-test, rubric-based role-play assessments, and a post-program survey. The analyses were descriptive and supplemented by qualitative classroom observations. Participants showed gains in recognizing and using target expressions in simple sentences. The most recalled more than five new lexical items and demonstrated improved lexical accuracy, fluency, and oral participation. Overall, the short communicative intervention appears feasible and promising for strengthening basic speaking readiness and thematic vocabulary in this setting; future studies should use multi-session designs with standardized measures and a comparison group to strengthen causal inference and track retention.

Abstract

In the globalization era, the qualified education requires literacy mastery, intercultural competence, and foreign language skills as essential 21st‑century competencies. However, the persistence of low reading competence and limited intercultural awareness remains a significant challenge in both Indonesia and Japan. In response to those challenges, this research aims to develop a multilingual digital storybook based on multimodality as a learning medium to enhance intercultural competence through the Indonesian and Japanese folktales. The study employs a creative-based research methodology approach through the ADDIE development model, which consists of the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The resulting product is an interactive digital e-book entitled Indonesia–Japan Folktales: Timun Mas & Momotaro, presented in three languages, Indonesian, English, and Japanese, combining textual content, visual illustrations, and audio narration. The experiment of the product was conducted with Japanese students from Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) enrolled in an intermediate-level Indonesian language course, involving such activities as interactive reading, discussion, reflection, and questionnaires. The findings indicate that the multimodal digital storybook effectively fosters student engagement, promotes reading motivation, and strengthens cross‑cultural understanding. Such effectiveness is reinforced by the integration of visual and audio elements that alleviate linguistic cognitive load, while the cross‑cultural narrative content fosters reflection and critical cultural awareness. Consequently, the multilingual and multimodal digital storybook serves as an effective medium for intercultural learning and contributes to the advancement of cultural literacy and the orientation of global education in the digital age.
