Abstract

This study investigates the effects of macroeconomic shock variables, namely inflation, the BI rate, and the exchange rate, on SME financing in Indonesia’s Sharia Rural Banks (BPRS). This research employs a quantitative approach using time-series data from April 2016 to August 2023, comprising 89 observations, and is analyzed using EViews 10. The results show that inflation has a more stable and dominant effect on SME financing cycles, whereas the BI rate and exchange rate exhibit heterogeneous and time-varying influences. Moreover, the contribution of inflation to SME financing in BPRS tends to increase over time. This study contributes to the Islamic finance literature by demonstrating a distinctive transmission mechanism of macroeconomic shocks within Sharia-based rural banking, which operates under profit-and-loss sharing and asset-backed financing principles. From a policy perspective, the findings suggest that maintaining price stability is crucial for sustaining SME financing growth in the Islamic banking sector. Therefore, Bank Indonesia (BI) should prioritize inflation control, while the Financial Services Authority (OJK) needs to strengthen prudential supervision to enhance BPRS resilience against external volatility. In addition, BPRS management is encouraged to improve risk management and portfolio strategies to mitigate macroeconomic uncertainty and ensure financing sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract

This study develops a financial literacy–based strategy to mitigate illegal investment risks in vulnerable coastal communities using a Financial Vulnerability Index (IKF) and a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach integrating AHP and TOPSIS. Conducted in three Central Maluku villages, the IKF combines economic vulnerability, financial literacy, and access to finance. Findings show Wailulu and Asilulu as highly vulnerable (IKF >0.90), while Tulehu is more resilient. AHP-TOPSIS results rank community- based training as the most effective strategy, followed by local media literacy and fishermen cooperative engagement. These findings validate the Community-Embedded Literacy Delivery Model (CELDM), highlighting the effectiveness of localized, participatory approaches. The study informs inclusive and adaptive financial literacy policies targeting high-risk populations. Keywords: illegal investment; financial literacy; community-based strategy; AHP-TOPSIS; coastal vulnerability; financial inclusion   Abstrak Penelitian ini mengembangkan strategi mitigasi investasi ilegal berbasis literasi keuangan bagi komunitas pesisir rentan dengan menggabungkan Indeks Kerentanan Finansial (IKF) dan pendekatan MCDM (AHP-TOPSIS). Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the long-term and short-term relationships between macroeconomic variables, namely the BI rate, inflation, and the exchange rate, and SME financing at Bank Perekonomian Rakyat Syariah (BPRS) in Indonesia. This study employs a quantitative approach using secondary time-series data from April 2016 to April 2025. The analytical method used is the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), which is a restricted form of the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model. Before estimating the VECM, several preliminary tests are conducted, including the stationarity test, optimal lag length test, stability test, cointegration test, and Granger causality test. Afterward, the VECM estimation is performed, followed by the impulse response function (IRF) analysis. Based on the results, the BI rate and the exchange rate exhibit varying responses across periods, while inflation consistently shows an increasing response in each period of SME financing. Similarly, the contributions of the BI rate and the exchange rate to SME financing fluctuate over time. In contrast, the contribution of inflation to SME financing at BPRS in Indonesia continues to increase in each period.
