Abstract

Syntax is a branch of linguistics that explains sentence structure. This study aims to discover what types of sentences are used in motivational quotes, which frequently emerge in motivational quotes, and describe sentence structure utilizing a tree diagram. This research employs the descriptive qualitative technique. The study involved multiple processes in data collection, including; reading the novel's text, choosing sentences of motivational quotes contained in the novel Atomic Habits, and writing down all the sentences of motivational quotes selected for analysis. The data were analyzed using Noam Chomsky’s theory “Transformational Generative Grammar”. The result of the study shows that the motivational quotes from the novel Atomic Habits have all types of sentences. In addition, the researcher also found the types of sentences that frequently emerge in motivational quotes from the novel, namely 22 simple sentences, 2 compound sentences, five complex sentences, and one compound-complex sentence. So, the dominant motivational quote is a simple sentence. This study has various types of sentences in motivational quotes that can be used to help English learners and improve writing skills in a text or essay according to grammatical rules.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their narrative writing skill among tenth-grade students at SMK Adi Luhur. A quantitative correlational research design was employed to examine the relationship between the two variables. The participants of this study were 75 students selected through random sampling from a population of 112 tenth-grade students. Data were collected using two instruments: a grammar test consisting of 30 items and a narrative writing test assessed through a writing rubric covering content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The validity test indicated that all instrument items were valid, while the reliability test yielded a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.918, indicating very high reliability. The normality test using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method revealed that the data were not normally distributed; therefore, Spearman’s Rank Correlation was applied to analyze the relationship between the variables. The findings showed a correlation coefficient of 0.663 with a significance value of 0.006 (p < 0.05). These results indicate a strong positive and statistically significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their narrative writing skill. Consequently, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The study concludes that students with higher levels of grammar mastery tend to demonstrate better performance in writing narrative texts. The findings suggest that integrating grammar instruction with narrative writing practice can contribute to improving students’ writing proficiency in vocational high school contexts.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts is often associated with repetitive memorization and limited engagement. Although memes have been examined as tools for vocabulary acquisition and retention, less attention has been given to how students perceive their role in incidental and informal digital learning. This qualitative descriptive study explored EFL students’ perceptions of memes as supplementary media for English vocabulary learning. Seven sixth-semester students from the English Education Study Program at FKIP UHAMKA were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured Zoom interviews and analyzed through transcription, repeated reading, manual coding, category development, theme development, interpretation, and member checking. The findings revealed that memes provided incidental exposure to unfamiliar vocabulary, supported meaning recognition through visual and contextual cues, and increased enjoyment, curiosity, and engagement. Participants also associated humorous and relatable contexts with vocabulary retention. However, they noted that slang, wordplay, cultural references, ambiguous meanings, and inappropriate language could limit the educational value of memes. The study contributes to understanding how incidental vocabulary learning, multimodal input, and learner engagement interact in informal digital environments. Memes are therefore most appropriate as carefully selected supplementary materials alongside structured vocabulary instruction.
