Abstract

As many as 70 countries have banned the use of asbestos-based materials because its fine, lightweight fibers are easily inhaled by humans, causing lung cancer, particularly mesothelioma, which can be fatal. This study aims to determine the effect of a silica sand and boiler ash reinforcement alloy on the application of non-asbestos aluminum matrix composite brake pads. This research uses a powder metallurgy method with varying reinforcement weight ratios, namely 8%, 10%, 12%, and 14% by weight. The mixing process is carried out through mechanical alloying using a horizontal ball mill at 90 rpm with a BPR ratio of 10:1. Hot compaction at 300°C was varied at a pressure of 5000-5300 PSI, followed by sintering at 580°C. Density, hardness, and wear were tested using ASTM standards, which were then compared with the brake lining standard SNI-09-0143-1987. Microstructural characterization was performed using SEM to determine the extent of interlocking bonds in the composite. The results showed that the 12wt% composition at 5200 PSI produced the best properties, with a density of 2.121 g/cm³, a hardness of 93.628 HB, and a wear of 0.0193 mm³/Nm. SEM images showed more uniform interlocking bonds compared to other variations. Increasing the compaction pressure was proven to increase density, hardness, and wear resistance. Overall, this study successfully produced environmentally friendly composite brake linings based on Silica Sand Powder and Boiler Ash without using asbestos materials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the number and diameter of dimple holes on the stiffness of mild steel plates using the Dimple Dies Triangle Profile forming method. Plate stiffness is important for reducing vibrations, especially in vehicle components. The material used was a 0.6 mm thick galvanneal plate, with dimple diameters of 25 mm and 30 mm, and hole quantities of 16 and 20. Testing was conducted using a Vibroport 80 device to measure natural frequency as an indicator of stiffness. The experimental design employed the Taguchi method with an L4 orthogonal array to analyze the influence of each parameter. The results showed that the number of dimple holes significantly affected the plate’s natural frequency, while the dimple diameter had no significant effect. The optimal combination producing the highest stiffness was a 25 mm dimple diameter with 16 holes. ANOVA and S/N ratio analysis supported these findings, indicating that the number of holes contributed more than 90% to the variation. This research is expected to serve as a reference for developing stiffer and more vibration-resistant metal plate designs, particularly for automotive and other engineering structure applications.

Abstract

Welding is the process of joining two or more metal materials into a single unit in the presence of heat energy. SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) welding is the process of joining two or more materials using wrapped electrodes as heat energy to melt the material. In SMAW welding there is the use of layers and passes. In this study, welding with variations of pass will be carried out using SMAW welding on St37 steel with 1G welding position. The pass variations used in welding are 6 passes, 7 passes, and 8 passes. The electrodes used were 2.6 mm diameter E7016 and 3.2 mm diameter E7018 electrodes. To determine the impact of pass variations on the welding results, an impact test will be carried out. From the results of research that has been done that welding with a small number of passes has a better amount of energy than welding with a large number of passes. Likewise for the impact price, welding with a small number of passes has a better impact price than welding with a large number of passes.

Abstract

This study aims to develop phenolic resin-based composite materials with the addition of aluminum, brass, silica, and bagasse ash powders as reinforcing materials, using powder metallurgy methods. The specimen manufacturing process was carried out through mixing stages using a ball mill, hot compaction with pressure variations of 5000 psi, 53 00 psi, and 5600 psi, and sintering at a temperature of 130°C for 10 minutes. The tests were conducted at the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of the Bangka Belitung State Polytechnic, including hardness tests (ASTM E110-14) and density tests (ASTM B962-17). The results showed that the pressing pressure and composition variations had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. The highest hardness value was obtained at a composition of 35% with a pressure of 5600 psi, while the optimal density was obtained at a composition of 31% with a pressure of 5300 psi. Overall, the combination of the right process parameters proved to be able to improve the quality of the composite, so that this material has the potential to be used as an alternative to asbestos-based brake pads.

Abstract

The process of bending steel pipes in making classroom table frames in many workshops is still carried out manually, resulting in less precise bending angles, inconsistent product quality, and low work efficiency. This study aims to design and make a jig and fixture for bending steel pipes as a tool to assist in the classroom table frame manufacturing process by applying the VDI 2222 method. The research stages include literature review, needs analysis, concept design, selection of design alternatives, making the tool, and testing the tool's performance. The testing was conducted on several types of steel pipes, namely galvanized pipes with thicknesses of 0.9 mm and 1.7 mm, as well as ST37 pipes with thicknesses of 1.4 mm and 1.7 mm. The results show that the designed jig and fixture can bend steel pipes up to a 90° angle while keeping the pipe stable during the bending process. The material and thickness of the pipe affect the quality of the bending results, where the thicker the pipe, the greater the force required and the higher the potential for wrinkles to form on the inside of the bend. A 1.4 mm thick ST37 steel pipe produces bending quality that is most suitable for making classroom table frames. Overall, the designed tool has fulfilled its function as a steel pipe bending aid, although further development is still needed on the forming and holding system to reduce bending defects and lower the operating force.
