Abstract

English Speaking skill plays an important role in communication for EFL learners, including those in Indonesia. However, the problem of speaking English is a frequently encountered topic of discussion in the body of literature and in educational contexts. There are various problems that are listed as the possible causes of language learners’ incompetence in speaking English from teachers’ perceptions which have to be investigated. In order to examine the teachers’ perceptions of students’ problems and possible causes when speaking English in the EFL classrooms, I interviewed three English teachers in a junior high school. Semi structured-interview was used to generate data, which were then analysed by using the Interactive Model of data analysis. The results indicated that lack of vocabulary, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes and language anxiety as students’ problems in speaking. In addition, the teachers perceived the possible causes derived from both intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as students’ motivation or willingness to practice speaking English and the environmental factors like family support which hindered the students from delivering their best speaking performance.

Abstract

This research titled “Senior High School Students’ Perceptions of the Practicality of the Materials in the English Workbooks Used in Their EFL Class” aims to raise the awareness regarding to the importance of the aspect of practicality in senior high school students’ workbooks. This study was based on finding out whether or not the material contained in the senior high school students’ workbooks are practical to be used or applied in their daily life situations based on their perspectives, hence this is qualitative research. The participants of this study were two senior high school students that are currently studying in their twelfth grade in one of the senior high schools in Jember. The data was collected by an individual recorded-interview, which then transcribed into a written form and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s Thematic Analysis Method (2008). The materials that were talked about contained in the participants’ workbook. The findings of this study revealed that most of the materials contained in the participants’ workbook are practical, which implied that those materials are proven to be helpful for students to be applied in their daily-life situations.

Abstract

This classroom action research, with one cycle, was aimed at improving junior high school students’ participation and reading comprehension achievement by using the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach. Observation, pre-test and post-test were used to collect the data. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics with a percentage formula. The research results showed that the student's participation during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension by applying TBLT improved from 73.9% in the second meeting, to 90 % in the third meeting, and to 100% in the fourth meeting. In addition, the students’ reading comprehension achievement also improved from 35% in the pre-test to 81% in the post-test. Therefore, junior high school English teachers are suggested to apply TBLT in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

Not all children’s books provide the space to examine how children think and interrogate natural, cultural, and social phenomena through their cognitive and communicative lenses. However, Na Willa dan Rumah dalam Gang foregrounds children’s voices that are often overlooked, if not pushed to the periphery. Framing the text as a form of resistance narrative, this study aims to unravel how multiculturality is negotiated through the perspective of the novel’s protagonist and her interactions with adult characters. Given the focus of this study on uncovering the negotiation of multiculturality in a children’s novel, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework is employed. Consequently, the findings are structured according to Fairclough’s three levels of discourse meaning-making. The first dimension of textual analysis examines authorial language style and intertextuality as tools for establishing an ideological stance. The second dimension highlights discursive practice in relation to the novel’s production and circulation. The third dimension employs recontextualization of critical multiculturalism (McLaren and Farahmandpur, 1999) to explore how the novel recenters the child as an active subject in meaning-making and in negotiating multicultural issues. In addition to recontextualized critical multiculturalism, the analysis also draws on linguistic and narratological understandings of discourse. This approach helps clarify how the author’s ideological orientation is textually manifested. The findings show that Na Willa dan Rumah dalam Gang situates children’s subjectivity at the centre of meaning-making around diversity, presenting it as a lived and celebrated experience rather than a merely anticipated ideal. Although children’s voices are recentred, adult characters still function as primary moral guides within the narrative. Overall, the study offers a renewed perspective on children’s literature as a medium for reimagining more nuanced forms of critical multiculturalism.
