Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: FOXE1 rs4460498 and GSTP-1 I105V gene polymorphisms are suspected of having a role in some of the non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (NS CLP) populations worldwide. This study aims to analyze FOXE1 rs4460498 and GSTP-1 I105V polymorphisms associated with NS CLP as the risk factor among Deutero Malay Subrace in Indonesia. Methods: This study was a case-control design, using samples from the venous blood of 102 NS CLP subjects and 102 healthy control subjects. After DNA was extracted, the PCR-RFLPs method was performed using TasI restriction enzyme on 100 blood samples of FOXE1 rs4460498 group and Alw26I restriction enzyme on 105 blood samples of the GSTP-1 I105V group. The Chi-Square test was used with the Kolmogorov Smirnov and Exact Fisher alternatives. Results: T mutant allele (OR= 0.926, p>0.05) and CT genotype (OR= 0.0, p>0.05) of FOXE1 rs4460498 and the G mutant allele (OR= 0.988,p>0.05) and AG genotype (OR= 0.675,p>0.05) of the GSTP-1 I105V are not the risks of NS CLP. Conclusion: FOXE1 rs4460498 and GSTP-1 I105V gene polymorphisms are not associated with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate among Deutero Malay Subrace in the Indonesian population.Key words: deutero malay; FOXE1 rs4460498; GSTP-1 I105V; NS CLP

Abstract

Introduction: Facial aesthetics significantly influence an individual's appearance and attractiveness. The chin is a crucial component of facial profile and personality. Lateral cephalometric radiography is frequently employed to assess the balance between skeletal structure and soft tissue, aiding in facial profile analysis, orthodontic diagnosis, and treatment planning. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between skeletal malocclusion and chin soft tissue thickness in patients at a Dental Hospital. Method: A cross-sectional study was employed. The research population comprised lateral cephalograms of orthodontic patients aged 15–28 years, taken at Unjani Dental Hospital between January 2018 and December 2023. A total of 81 cephalograms were selected using consecutive sampling, based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. These cephalograms were categorized into three malocclusion groups (Angle Class I, II, and III). Soft tissue thickness at the chin was measured from the skeletal to the soft tissue at the Pogonion (Pog-Pog'), Gnathion (Gn-Gn'), and Menton (Me-Me') points. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The average chin soft tissue thickness at the Pogonion point was greatest in Class II malocclusion (13.38 mm) compared with Class I (13.14 mm) and Class III (13.03 mm). Similarly, the greatest average thickness at the Gnathion point was also observed in the Class II malocclusion group. The ANOVA test yielded a p-value of 0.991 for Gnathion, while the Kruskal-Wallis test showed p-values of 0.918 for Pogonion and 0.698 for Menton. Conclusion: There is no relationship between skeletal malocclusion and chin soft tissue thickness among patients at a dental hospital.

Abstract

Zygoma fracture is part of midfacial trauma, which is usually caused by contact force, especially due to traffic accidents. Zygoma fracture can be accompanied by damage to soft tissue, teeth, and bone structure around the zygoma. A 20-year-old male patient came to the Emergency Room of RSD Gunung Jati Cirebon Indonesia with complaints of bleeding from the mouth for 8 hours due to a motorcycle accident. The patient was wearing a half-face helmet, and his face was hit the sidewalk. and had no history of being unconscious, nausea, vomiting, nor bleeding from the nose and ears. On examination, the face appeared asymmetrical, accompanied by edema and an abrasion wound on the left cheek, a laceration on the tongue, and avulsion of teeth 33 and 42. The patient underwent a CBCT examination, with the results showing a fracture line on the left zygoma. The patient was treated by performing an Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) on the fracture and stitching the wound on the tongue. The fracture healed well, chewing and speech function improved, and the face returned to symmetry with good dental occlusion. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v5n1.p59-68

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Tooth transplantation is the transfer of one tooth into its new position in the jaw of the same person. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the transplantation of an ectopic upper canine to the proper position where the primary canine is still occupied. Case report: a female patient came to the Oral Surgery clinic with a complaint that her left upper canine was growing towards the palate, so that her deciduous teeth did not fall out. The treatment for this patient was the atraumatic extraction of the left deciduous canine teeth and the permanent canine, then the permanent canine was transplanted into a socket of the deciduous teeth that was extracted. The transplanted= canines were then fixed with interdental wiring (IDW) for 3 months. At the time of follow-up, the canine was healing well, and was able to work well. A tooth can be transplanted into its new position with the best achieved if the integrity of the periodontal membrane remains vital, the extraction process is as atraumatic as possible, and with a short time of the tooth was outside the mouth. Conclusion: an ectopic tooth can be transplanted in proper position in the arch if there is sufficient space, the integrity of the periodontal ligament is maintained, time outside the mouth is short, and accompanied by adequate fixation.

Abstract

The third molar is the last tooth to erupt, so it often experiences impaction with varying severity. Impacted teeth can cause various problems, so they need to be removed. Extraction of the third molar, namely odontectomy, sometimes causes postoperative complications; one of the most common is pain. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the severity of impaction of the lower third molar and the intensity of pain after odontectomy. This study is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling method used was non-random, using the purposive sampling technique, for patients who came to the oral surgery clinic of Gunung Jati Regional Hospital, Cirebon, and had undergone odontectomy of the lower third molar. This study assessed the severity of impaction based on the Pedersen classification with the help of panoramic images into mild, moderate, and severe. The intensity of pain after odontectomy was measured using the NRS score into mild, moderate, and severe. The results showed that of the 37 patients who underwent odontectomy, the majority had moderate impaction severity in 24 patients (64.9%) and experienced moderate pain intensity post-odontectomy in 14 patients (37.8%). Spearman's correlation test showed a p-value of 0.530 (p> 0.05). there is no correlation between the severity of lower third molar impaction and postoperative pain intensity.
