Abstract

There is always a suspicious view from Moslem intellectual to orientalist’s research and studies on Islamic discourse. The former sees doubtfully that orientalist's research on Islam is fully bias and politically tendentious. William G. Millward observed on this Moslem's suspicion within their books. Moreover, Iranian Moslem intellectuals, according to Millward, tend to be apologetic and emotional. Moslem writers in such situation question the academic authenticity of the orientalists especially in terms of their objective studies on the Quran and the prophet Muhammad. Moslem writers in this regard consider their objectivity toward their finding research that harms Islam in order to Islamic teaching can be returned to the authentic comprehension as believed by the followers. Interestingly, some western intellectuals had also criticized and evaluated the orientalist’s research and studies on Islam. It shows that some of western intellectuals are still implementing the principle of freedom of thought. With this freedom, scholars can deconstruct the negative perspective of the orientalists toward Islamic studies, though such perspectives have crystalized becoming a standard of mainstream thoughts. However, it needs to know that those critics are still suspected having inserted with subjective ideas recalling that religious study is always familiar with an interpretative load and preference.

Abstract

This article examines Salafi da'wah (Islamic proselytizing) movements on private TV stations at the national level. The proliferation of da'wah on private TV in post-Suharto regimes is considered part of the increasing commodification of Islam, which targets middle-class Muslims as a market for economic benefits. The routine appearances of these preachers have shaped alternative religious authority that challenges and competes with the conventional ones from Islamic organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama or Muhammadiyah and Islamic education institutions such as pesantren or Islamic universities. Since 2010, Salafi da'wah has challenged this by providing da'wah contents that focus on educating Muslims to be more pious. Drawing from participatory observation and in-depth interviews with program producers and other related parties, this article strives to answer how the Salafi da'wah movement attempts to dominate the Islamic public sphere in the country and face competition with other religious authorities through da'wah programs on TV. It is argued that the emergence of the Salafi authority through the da'wah program on TV has challenged the dominance of mainstream da'wah of Nahdlatul Ulama or Muhammadiyah in the Indonesian public sphere.

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of market mechanisms according to Abu Yusuf and Ibn Khaldun, with an in-depth analysis of their main works, Al-Kharaj and Al-Muqaddimah. Abu Yusuf, a jurist and economic advisor during the Abbasid Dynasty, emphasized the importance of the government's role in regulating markets to prevent injustice and exploitation. Meanwhile, Ibn Khaldun, a philosopher and historian, offered a more dynamic perspective on markets, emphasizing the balance between supply and demand and the influence of economic policy on the cycles of civilization. This research uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach to identify similarities and differences in the views of the two figures. The results of the study show that despite having different approaches, both agree that justice and economic stability are key elements in an ideal market mechanism. It is hoped that this article will contribute to a deeper understanding of classical Islamic economic thought and its relevance in the modern economic context

Abstract

This study explores the socio-historical development of the Interfaith Harmony Forum (Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama/FKUB) and its contribution to sustaining religious harmony in Kediri City, East Java. Kediri, historically a multicultural hub since the Airlangga Kingdom (11th century) and later shaped by Hindu-Buddhist traditions, Dutch colonial missions, and Islamic boarding-school culture, remains one of Indonesia’s most tolerant cities. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the article examines how FKUB—founded in 1998 as a response to the May 1998 riots—together with the Paguyuban Antar Umat Beragama dan Penghayat Kepercayaan (PAUB/PKUB), the Faculty of Ushuluddin of IAIN Kediri (now UIN Syekh Wasil Kediri), and the youth-focused Paguyuban Lintas Masyarakat (PaLM), has mediated interfaith tensions, promoted dialogue, and organized inclusive social programs. The findings reveal that these institutions have significantly reduced religious conflict, strengthened social cohesion, and enhanced Kediri’s Harmony Index—reaching 3.91 in 2019 and keeping the city among Indonesia’s top-ten most tolerant. The study highlights that historical inclusivity, continuous dialogue, youth engagement, and state-community collaboration are key to sustaining religious moderation and offer a transferable model for other plural societies.
