Abstract

This research aims to find out the types and meaning of figurative language used in “Up All Night album 2011” by One Direction and to describe the meanings conveyed from the figurative language used in “Up All Night album 2011” Sung by One Direction. The researcher used the theory from Leech to find out the types of figurative language. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to find out the types of figurative language and the meaning of figurative language. The result of this research there are 7 types of figurative language found in Up All-Night album 2011. Based on the data 40 lyrics contains figurative language, those are: hyperbole 3 data, irony 1 data, metaphor 1 data, metonymy 3 data, personification 1 data, simile 3 data, and repetition of 29 data and 11 lyrics contains meaning, they are Conceptual meaning 5 data, Connotative Meaning 4 data, and Affective Meaning 2 data. This research is expected to contribute as a medium for learning because there are so many enthusiasts in listening to music. After all, music will be more interesting, relaxing, and have a high score in language style.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the writing skills of ninth-grade students at SMP N 2 Tabanan through the application of the Flip Picture technique in narrative texts. This technique utilizes a series of images as visual aids to stimulate students' imagination and help them understand narrative structure. The research employed a classroom action research method with two main stages: pre-test and post-test. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students' writing abilities, with the average score increasing from 65 in the pre-test to 80 in the post-test. The Flip Picture technique proved effective in enhancing text organization, vocabulary usage, and student creativity. Additionally, students demonstrated higher motivation and engagement during the writing process. However, some students faced difficulties in constructing sentences due to limited vocabulary. This study concludes that the Flip Picture technique can serve as an innovative and interactive teaching method to enhance writing skills, particularly in narrative texts. Further research is recommended to combine this technique with vocabulary enhancement strategies for more comprehensive writing skill development.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of short videos to improve students’ writing skills of narrative texts at the vocational high school. This study is categorized as classroom action research. The use of short videos helps students understand the generic structures of narrative texts. During learning processes, students are asked to analyze the narrative structures from the introductory to the conclusion paragraph. (Manalu & Tarigan & Sitopu & Silaban, 2021). In the first cycle, students demonstrated moderate improvement in writing narrative texts. However, issues such as limited vocabulary and incorrect use of tenses were still apparent. After analyzing these challenges during the reflection phase, additional activities were incorporated in the second cycle, including vocabulary-building exercises and focused grammar drills. By the end of the second cycle, the students showed substantial progress. The average writing score increased from 65 in the pre-test to 75 in the post-test of the first cycle, and further to 85 in the post-test of the second cycle. Moreover, students displayed enhanced creativity and engagement, which were evident in the originality and coherence of their stories. The use of short videos provided visual context, making it easier for students to generate ideas and structure their narratives effectively.

Abstract

This research aims to examine discourse components on the dynamics of female stereotype in texts. This research uses data taken from the Narrative text of an English textbook specifically designed for elementary school students in Indonesia. Books are considered a valuable source of scientific inquiry. This research uses a combination of data analysis techniques and field methods, especially by observations and interviews. The data collection strategy used in this research includes the use of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation of language forms contained in narrative texts in textbooks. The findings of this research show there are some aspects of discourse on the dynamics of female representation in students’ texts book, which include microstructure, macrostructure, and superstructure of the text. Microstructure includes grammatical components such as references, substitution, and conjunctions. The macrostructures are contained in context, circumstances, and culture that successfully represent women from different points of view. The superstructure of the text include orientation, complication and resolution. Data analysis reveals the prevalence of female stereotypes as evidenced by micro, macro, and superstructure.

Abstract

This classroom action study dealt with implementing photovoice in teaching speaking to the tenth grade students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar. The purpose of study the student could explain about a picture that showed in the slide show orally. The study have been stated as the following: speaking skill at the tenth grade students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar can be improved through photovoice. This study was conducted in X IPA class that consisted of 36 females and 13 males. These subjects were chosen because faced by the fact that the subjects under study still low in speaking English and lack of confident. It was proved that the mean score of pre-test was 59.18. To enhance the improvement of their speaking skill, the researcher tried to apply photovoice technique. The researcher conducted Cycle I and the results of the data analysis of the reflection were 70.81. Then, the researcher continued the research by conducting the cycle II and the result of the data analysis of reflections in cycle II were 81.02. The finding showed that there was improvement of the students scores after the implementing of photovoice technique. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that option A was 72.47%, option B was 20.70%, option C was 6.81%, and option D was 0%. From the result of the study, it could be concluded that photovoice technique could improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar.

Abstract

In learning a language there are four basic language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, there are three areas that play an important role in supporting these four language skills (Megawati, 2016). The three parts are: pronunciation, vocabulary (words) and punctuation pronunciation. Therefore, many students face obstacles in learning English. These difficulties are also experienced by children at SOS Children's Village Bali, so that in the end they have an impact on their interest in learning English. Seeing these situations and conditions, this is a reason to carry out Community Service because they really need it. The English learning activity in this service is called Fun English and aims to create a fun learning environment. The focus of this fun English activity is to improve reading and speaking skills. This PKM is carried out for children at SOS Children's Village Bali. The method used in this social service is the recitation method. The recitation method is a model of presenting teaching materials by giving assignments to students. The participants who took part were students in primary school and junior high school education backgrounds. The achievement of this PKM is an increase in participants' ability to say vocabulary correctly. Participants have understood how to pronounce punctuation marks correctly. The result of this activity is that participants' concentration and motivation increase, this is proven by the results of the activity evaluation in the post-test. In this way, participants also feel happy and do not feel awkward when participating in all the fun English activities at PKM.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Desa Tenganan merupakan desa yang mempunyai tradisi unik yaitu megeret, meayunan, dan menenun kain Gringsing. Banyak wisatawan asing yang berkunjung ke Desa Tenganan untuk melihat tradisi yang unik tersebut terutama tradisi menenun kain Gringsing serta menawar langsung kerajinan kain tenun Gringsing yang diinginkan. Namun masyarakat masih belum mampu berkomunikasi dengan baik kepada wisatawan asing. Pengabdian Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan tentang komunikasi Bahasa Inggris kepada masyarakat Desa Tenganan. Pemecahan masalah dilakukan dengan mengadakan pelatihan terhadap komunitas pengrajin kain tenun di Desa Tenganan dengan menggunakan metode Direct Method yang dikombinasikan dengan drill. Pengabdian masyarakat ini diawali dengan observasi lapangan lalu menyusun materi ajar yang dibutuhkan. Dari hasil yang diperoleh peserta pelatihan mampu meraih nilai dengan kriteria sangat baik dengan nilai rata-rata 87. Setelah dilaksanakan pengabdian masyarakat seperti ini, sangat diharapkan para masyarakat dapat berkomunikasi dengan baik kepada wisatawan yang datang ke Desa Tenganan.Kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Tenun, Kain Gringsing.ABSTRACTTenganan village is a village that has unique tradition of Mageret, Meayunan and Gringsing weaving. Many tourists visiting Tenganan to see this unique tradition, especially the tradition of weaving Gringsing fabrics, besides that they directly to bidding the handcrafted wove Gringsing fabrics. However, the people are still not able to communicate well with the tourist. This community service aims to provide knowledge about English communication to the community of Tenganan village. Problem solving is done by conducting training for the community of woven fabric craftsmen in Tenganan village by using Direct Method as a learning method combined with Drill. This community service begins with observations and then arranges the required teaching material. From the results obtained by the trainees, they were able to achieve very good criteria with an average score of 87. After this community service was implemented, it was expected that the people can communicate well to tourist who come to Tenganan village.Key words: English Language, Weaving, Gringsing Fabric

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research aims to identifythe errors in using gerund who committed by the students, as: the percentage of errors used the theory of Bluman (2009:74), the types of error used the theory of Dulay, Burt, & Krashen, (1982:146-191), and the sources of error used the theory of Richards (1971) as cited in Ellis (1994). The subject of this research was the students at the fourth semester of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts Education, IKIP Saraswati in Tabanan. In this research qualitative was the method in analyzing and describing the data, then used random sampling technique in taking the samples, and some techniques also were delivered in order to get the data, as: English test, used gerund as the instrument in testing the students’ ability, as: subject of a sentence, object of a preposition, after a possessive, and gerund used after the certain verbs.The result of this research has found the types of errorr: misformation, addition, and omission.
