Abstract

This study aims to determine the pH, VFA and NH3 values of rice straw silage made with the addition of Porang flour additives. Research and silage analysis was conducted at the Faculty of Maritime Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, University of Nusa Cendana, Kupang. The design in this study was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and four replications. Treatment P0 (rice straw silage without Porang flour additive) as control, P1 treatment (rice straw silage with 3% Porang flour additive), P2 (rice straw silage with 6% Porang flour additive) and P3 (rice straw silage with 9% Porang flour additive). The observed variables were pH, VFA and NH3. The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test. The results showed that all treatments had a significant effect (P<0.01) on pH, VFA and NH3 values. The pH values ranged from 3.78 – 5.48, the total VFA values ranged from 61.13 mM – 86.06 mM, and the NH3 values ranged from 5.88 mM – 9.50 mM. As a result, adding Porang flour (Amorphophallus muelleri) as an additive in rice straw silage up to 9% significantly lowered the pH value and increased the VFA and NH3 values.

Abstract

Boar semen preservation is a method of preserving semen that serves to extend its shelf life and increase its volume, thereby impacting the number of females that are inseminated. Preserved semen is directly related to the quality of the diluent used. Patented diluents are the preferred choice for semen dilution, but they are expensive and not always available, so many studies have examined the use of natural diluents for preservation. The purpose of this literature study is to examine the effectiveness of moringa leaf extract and palmyra juice as natural diluents in semen preservation. The method used in this literature study was to collect various updated sources obtained from journals found through Google Scholar, Scopus, and Sinta. The selection of sources was based on their relevance to topics such as moringa leaf extract, palmyra juice, boar semen, preservation, antioxidants, and artificial insemination. Based on the research that has been conducted, moringa leaf extract and palmyra juice provide good results in improving semen quality, particularly in increasing sperm motility and viability, as well as providing an environmentally friendly and affordable alternative diluent for farmers. The use of palmyra juice has been added as a natural diluent that can protect bovine spermatozoa during preservation, while the addition of moringa leaf extract in tris-egg yolk diluent can suppress abnormal sperm abnormalities in sheep during cold storage. Overall, the use of both moringa leaf extract and palmyra juice offers an effective and efficient alternative solution in boar semen preservation for artificial insemination programs

Abstract

Dryland regions commonly experience ruminant feed shortages during the dry season. The year‑round availability of high‑quality feed is a critical prerequisite for sustainable livestock development. Livestock productivity can be improved through the consistent provision of nutritionally adequate feed resources. This opportunity is supported by abundant agricultural production, particularly maize, which has not yet been optimally utilized for livestock feeding. However, most existing feed resources are characterized by low nutritional value and therefore cannot adequately support animal productivity without further processing. Agricultural residues such as rice straw and corn stover are available in large quantities but require technological intervention to improve their feeding value. Processing technologies based on silage and ammoniation have been widely reported to enhance nutrient availability and extend the storage life of these materials. This review synthesizes published research on the potential of agricultural residues as ruminant feed resources in dryland ecosystems and evaluates the effectiveness of silage and ammoniation technologies. The evidence indicates that both technologies substantially improve feed quality, increase feed availability during the dry season, and strengthen farmers’ capacity to utilize local resources in a sustainable livestock production system.
