Abstract

This article describes two Indonesian movies, “A Man Called Ahok” and “Hanum & Rangga”, which were premiered on the same date before the Indonesian general election in 2019. Using a political communication perspective, it asks did the release of the two movies represent political interests of presidential candidates running for the presidency in the general election in 2019? This article argues that it is not sufficient evidence to conclude that the release of the two movies on the same date constitutes a medium of the political campaign of the candidates running for the presidency in 2019. There was no explicit relationship between the movies’ contents and the two pairs of presidential candidates. What is more appropriate to say is that the release of the two movies was an instrument of personal political interests of two political figures whose life stories were taken into movies. It also can be said that the release of the two movies impacted voters insignificantly as they already had a solid decision to vote for their presidential candidates before the release of the movies.
