Abstract

This study was designed to determine the phenotype characteristics of Sasak ducks in Lombok Island.  The study used 64 Sasak ducks at production stage which were kept intensively by small holder farmers. Observations on the characteristics of the feather color were carried out directly on each animal. The data observed were feather colors, beak color, and the color of the foot and shank, while the data on the size of the body that was observed were body weight, beak length, neck length, back length, breast circumference, back length, thigh length, shank length, and the distance between the two pubic bones. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. The study concluded that the characteristic of the color of feathers in Sasak ducks were dominated by Roman color (50.13%), followed by Tanak color (21.87%), Tongkak color (15.63%), Rombak color (6.25%), and Cemaning color (3.12%).  Sasak ducks with medium size were observed to have a relatively long beak, medium-long neck, short back, broad and deep chest, medium height, and the distance between the two pubic bones was quite wide. These characteristics indicate that Sasak ducks are the type of superior Indian Runner having better production ability compared to the other types of Indian Runner duck.

Abstract

One of the factors that affect egg quality is the rearing system. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of fresh local duck eggs obtained from members of the Karya Mandiri Duck Farmers Group. Egg collection was carried out in turns for 5 days from 5 farmers who had ducks in the egg-laying phase. Each farmer was randomly taken 10% of the total egg production, so that 105 eggs were collected. The external and internal quality of the sample eggs were then measured at the Animal Product Processing Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Mataram. The results of the study found that the internal quality of the fresh duck eggs observed was classified as very good, but the external quality of 50% was classified as low. The local duck eggs from Lombok, produced by the Karya Mandiri Duck Farmers Group, are mostly of high quality, with 50% classified as grade AA. It is recommended to improve the housing system to further enhance quality.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of slaughter age and sex on carcass dimensions in KUB chickens. A Randomized Block Design with a 2 x 4 factorial layout was used, incorporating two variables: sex (male and female) and slaughter age (4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks). Each treatment group included 10 chickens, evenly divided between males and females. The parameters measured included the length and width of the upper and lower thigh, wing length, and the length and width of the breast and back. The results showed that slaughter age had a significant effect (P<0.05) on all measured traits, including thigh and wing sizes, breast dimensions, and the back length and width. Sex also had a significant influence on upper thigh dimensions, breast length, and back size. Additionally, there was a significant interaction between sex and slaughter age for upper thigh size, wing length, and breast dimensions (P<0.05). The most substantial carcass measurements were observed in chickens slaughtered at 10 weeks of age. Male KUB chickens had carcass dimension was higher than the females.

Abstract

This activity aims to evaluate the development of the pioneering project of egg-laying chicken farming in Keramajaya Village, Narmada District, West Lombok Regency. This project is part of the Matching Grant program which is a collaboration between Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta and Mataram University. Monitoring activities are carried out through direct evaluation of the condition of the cage, feeding system and provision, livestock development, and egg production. Data collection is carried out through structured interviews with group members using interview guides, as well as direct observation at the farm location. In addition, socio-institutional aspects are also studied, which include: (1) member participation, (2) group performance, and (3) business sustainability. The evaluation results show that the egg-laying chicken farming business is running well. All group members show solidarity and togetherness, especially in decision-making related to business direction. During the two years of project implementation, the chicken population increased from 150 to 440, which was obtained from the profits from the sale of eggs and culled chickens. It is concluded that the pioneering project of egg-laying chicken farming in Keramajaya Village has good prospects and has the potential to develop into an independent and sustainable group farming business.
