Abstract

The performance of laying hens is affected by feed quality and can be seen from feed consumption, egg weight and hen day production (HDP). The aim of this study was to determine the quality of feed on the performance of laying hens. Sampling was carried out via interview on farmers in East Lombok representing each sub-district with a minimum population of 500 laying hens. Sampling of feed ingredients and 20 eggs was carried out on each farm for analysis in the laboratory. The descriptive analysis was performed on acquired data. The results showed that farmers in East Lombok used different percentages of corn, concentrate and mineral feed ingredients. The nutritional content of feed given consist of crude protein (14,17-16,90%), crude fat (3,17-3,36%), crude fiber (6,13-7,06%), calcium (1, 03-1,29), phosphorus (0,26-1,33%) and metabolic energy (2751,96-2925,79 Kcal/kg). The conclusion is some farmers in East Lombok Regency provide feed that does not suitable to the nutritional needs required by laying hens, namely the content of crude protein, calcium and phosphorus according to SNI standards which has an impact on reducing egg weight and HDP.

Abstract

The service activity aims to train the Teruwai Village Poultry community in cultivating BSF maggots to overcome the problem of livestock waste and kitchen organic waste. Activities were carried out in two activity stages, namely: Stage 1, socialization on BSF maggot cultivation, and Stage II, training on BSF maggot cultivation using poultry farm waste and kitchen organic waste. The targets are village administrators, communities, and poultry farmer groups. The training begins with the hatching stage, rearing mini larvae to become adult maggots, followed by the process of harvesting adult maggots and prepupae and flies, to harvesting eggs as well as harvesting used maggot media (kasgot) which has the potential to be used as fertilizer. The service activities were enthusiastically welcomed by the village head and his staff, breeders, and the Teruwai Village community. The attendance of service participants reached approximately 40 people. There has been an increase in public knowledge about the potential of maggots as poultry feed. The Village Government is committed to trying to cultivate maggots as a pilot project for the community by training each household to sort organic waste and collect it in one location to be used as a medium for growing BSF maggots. The Village Government hopes that this activity will not only solve environmental problems but also overcome the problem of the high price of poultry feed, and will increase people’s income with economically valuable maggot and cashew products.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Glutamate is one of the amino acids that can act as flavor neurotransmitter. Some lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are known as producers of glutamate. Such LAB could be widely found in many fermentation products. The objectives of this study were to isolate and characterize some glutamate producing LAB isolated from West Sumatera fermented food products (dadih, asam durian, ikan budu and tapai). A total of 1,014 LAB was isolated from the fermented food products. Of these, 40 isolates were considered the best based on their ability to produce inhibition zones >2mm in the presence of 2% CaCO3. Qualitative analysis using thin layer chromatography and quantitative analysis using spectrophotometer revealed that 27 of the 40 LAB isolates produce glutamate. The highest glutamate production was found in LAB of dadih origin (coded as N32). N32 produced a glutamate of 38.25 mg/ml. N32 was found to be gram positive, negative for catalase, oxidase and motility, and can utilize sugars in the form of lactose, glucose and mannitol. The N32 was identified to be Lactobacullus sp. Thus N32 (Lactobacullus sp) from dadih has the potential to produce glutamate acid. Keywords: glutamate, building blocks, lactic acid bacteria, food fermentatio
