Abstract

Orthodontic movement of a tooth or group of teeth occurs due to the application of the force applied by active components and these acting forces always generate reciprocal forces of the same magnitude but opposite in direction which follows Newton’s third law. Basically, anchoring management aims to keep the force used light and increase anchoring resistance, so that the gear that is expected to move while the teeth that are not expected to move can be held or minimized. During treatment, anchorage loss must be detected immediately, the cause searched, and dealt with as soon as possible so that no more severe errors occur so that the treatment results can be as good as possible. The purpose of this paper is to examine how to manage anchoring problems in orthodontic treatment using removable appliance, especially active removable appliance so that treatment results achieve satisfactory results.

Abstract

Malocclusion is a condition that deviates from normal occlusion including irregularities of the teeth in the arch of the jaw such as crowding, protrusive, malposition and relationships that are not harmonious with the antagonist teeth. Non-physiological oral habits are abnormal human habits that cause stresses and tendencies that persist and are repeated continuously so that it affects craniofacial growth and is usually called bad habits. Changes in the activity of these muscles will lead to modification of facial growth patterns and head posture that can result in dentofacial deformity. Adaptation from nasal breathing to mouth breathing causes several unhealthy things, such as chronic middle ear infections, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infections, sleep disor-ders, and facial growth disorders.

Abstract

Introduction: Orthodontic treatment results in a tooth movement that aims to correct the abnormal tooth position into a normal and aesthetic position. The principle of tooth movement that applies pressure produces remodeling which can be seen from a microscopic. Objective: The objective of this article is aimed to describe the biomechanics of tooth movement that occurs when using removable orthodontics. Methods: scientific evidence are taken from literature to support the clear and detailed informa-tion. Conclusion: Orthodontic tooth movement is based on biological principles. The intermittent or continuous forces applied to the teeth, altering the mechanical system and then limiting the cellular response leading to bone adaptation in a new functional environment.

Abstract

Background: In 2020, WHO declared the name of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). In the middle of the pandemic, orthodontists have limited their treatment. The challenges of the orthodontic profession in performing treatment become more difficult due to many factors, such as high saliva concentrations. Objective: To find out how to prevent cross-infection of Covid-19 in performing orthodontic treatment during the pandemic. Methods: By using a literature review, information that is relevant to the topic of the study is collected and then synthesized in an article. Results: It was found that there were similarities in the dis-cussion regarding the difficulty of consulting and taking active and inactive orthodontic treatment actions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusion: In orthodontic treatment during this pandemic, dentists and clinical health staff must triage patients be-fore visiting the clinic and must carry out infection control management at the clinic, both orthodontic treatment procedures and other pressure.

Abstract

Public awareness of the importance of orthodontic treatment to correct malocclusion is increasing. Orthodontic treatment like any other medical treatment can pose a risk to the patient, due to errors that occur during treatment. This literature review aimed to determine the errors that can occur during orthodontic treatment and the risks they can pose to patients. Scientific information relevant to the study topic was collected and synthesized into an article. In general, errors can originate from orthodontic treat-ment, including the type of appliance used, the direction and amount of force applied, the skill of the clinician and the length of treatment. Errors can also originate from the patient, namely biological and behavioral factors of the patient. It is concluded that orthodontic treatment errors and patient factors can cause risks to patients during orthodontic treatment, namely periodontal da-mage, pain, root resorption, tooth devitalization, temporomandibular joint disorders, caries, and enamel damage. A good under-standing of treatment procedures, diagnosis and patient informed consent is needed in order to minimize the risks of orthodon-tic treatment that can occur in patients.

Abstract

Malocclusion can affect physical, social and psychological well-being and self-esteem. Therefore, interest in the need for ortho-dontic treatment is increasing to improve the appearance, function of teeth, psychological well-being and quality of life of a person. However, orthodontic treatment carries some risks. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge of treatment risks and interest in using fixed orthodontic appliance. This type of research is analytical observational with a cross-sectional re-search design. The subjects of this research were 99 Hasanuddin University students from the class of 2021 and 2022. It is con-cluded that the results obtained are that the two variables have a unidirectional relationship, but it is very weak and not significant.

Abstract

Objective: A male patient 23 years, 10 months with a Class II skeletal malocclusion, n class II subdivision dental-malocclussion, included openbite, overbite –6 mm, overjet 8 mm, agenesis of 41, mandibular midline shift to the right, deep palate, mandibular rectognathi and mild crowding of mandibular. Methods: Treatment was extraction of maxillary first premolar with a fixed appliance combined with Class II elastics and box elastic. After 2 years of treatment, correction of the openbite and overjet, lower anterior crowding were achieved. The treatment still continued. Results: The retention of post treatment with camouflage treatment is needed and takes a long time because some cases is reported be relapse very frequently, some literature suggests the use of permanent retention in openbite cases. Conclusion: Long retention is required for the stability of the treatment results.

Abstract

Investigating the role of oral myofunctional therapy for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A literature search was conducted to find randomised controlled trials conducted in humans. Oral myofunctional therapy was found to be effective for the treatment of TMD, both as a single therapy and in combination with other treatments. It was concluded that although the scientific evidence is still weak, oral myofunctional therapy appears to be effective for the treatment of TMD with a favourable cost-benefit and risk-benefit ratio.
