Abstract

This study explored the phenomenon of maxim flouting in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole during the Dubai Eye 103.8 Sports Podcast. It tried to describe flouting maxims by John Terry in the podcast and the similarities and differences between the flouting maxim in the utterances of John Terry and Ashley Cole. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to analyze and interpret the data, utilizing Grice's (1975) theory of conversational maxims as the theoretical framework to explain instances of maxim flouting in the cooperative principle observed in the speakers' utterances. Data collection was conducted through document analysis. The findings revealed that John Terry's utterances contained several instances of maxim flouting: 25 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (64.8%), 1 instance of flouting the maxim of quality (3.7%), 8 instances of flouting the maxim of relation (20.7%), and 4 instances of flouting the maxim of manner (10.8%). In contrast, Ashley Cole's utterances included 21 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (80.7%), 2 instances each of flouting the maxims of quality and relation (7.7% each), and 1 instance of flouting the maxim of manner (3.9%). The study also identified a key similarity: both speakers predominantly flouted the maxim of quantity in their utterances. However, a notable difference was observed in the frequency and distribution of the flouted maxims between the two speakers. Keyword: flouting maxim, cooperative principle, podcast, pragmatics

Abstract

This article explores the representation of portal fantasy in three distinct works: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Solo Leveling Volume 1 by Chu-Gong, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Volume 1 by Fuse. The research problem centers on how the portal fantasy formula is adapted and represented in different literary forms novels and manga. Drawing on theories from Farah Mendlesohn on fantasy genres, E.M. Forster on key elements of novels, and Will Eisner on comics, the study employs a comparative literature approach and qualitative methods, including close reading and textual analysis. The analysis focuses on key elements such as setting, plot, motif, and character to uncover how these works embody the portal fantasy genre. The findings reveal that each work utilizes the portal concept uniquely to achieve distinct narrative purposes: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe emphasizes the contrast between the real world and a magical one, offering moral and exploratory adventures, Solo Leveling presents a dynamic, challenge-filled journey that serves as a metaphor for personal growth and transformation and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime explores themes of identity and adaptation through the protagonist’s reincarnation in a fantastical world. The results highlight the versatility of the portal fantasy genre in conveying complex themes of transformation, identity, and exploration across different media. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how portal fantasy functions within various literary forms, offering insights into its narrative potential and thematic richness.

Abstract

This study explores the role of figurative language in shaping thematic meanings in Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic album. Using qualitative semantic analysis, it examines how metaphors, similes, hyperboles, personifications, and metonymies enhance the album’s themes of luxury, confidence, romance, and celebration. Analyzing nine tracks, the study identifies 45 instances of figurative language—metaphors (15), similes (10), hyperboles (8), personifications (7), and metonymies (5)—demonstrating how these devices enrich lyrical aesthetics, deepen emotional engagement, and create vivid imagery. Findings highlight the power of figurative language in reinforcing thematic coherence and amplifying listener interpretation. This research contributes to semantic analysis in music by bridging linguistic and literary perspectives, offering insights into how symbolic language enhances meaning.

Abstract

This study analyzes the romantic formula in Midnight Sun (2018) by analyzing the plot and characterization through the lens of John G. Cawelti's romantic formula theory, supported by Radway's theory. Using a qualitative research design and an objective literary criticism approach, this study identifies the key elements of the romantic formula, including the initial meeting between the protagonists, the development of their relationship, the introduction of conflict, and its resolution. The findings show that Midnight Sun successfully applies the classic structure of romantic narratives. The film follows Cawelti's stages from the first meeting, the development of the relationship, emotional conflict, and ends with a bittersweet yet meaningful resolution. The characterization revealed by Radway reflects the romantic formula that provides emotional depth and satisfaction for the audience. The findings show that Midnight Sun follows the common romantic structure, where the relationship between the hero and heroine develops through emotional and situational obstacles before reaching a resolution. This study contributes to the broader discourse on romantic narratives in popular cinema, offering insights into the application of formulaic storytelling in contemporary films.
