Abstract

The transformation of Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia has become increasingly urgent as newly established universities face growing pressures to achieve academic excellence, strengthen governance, and enhance global competitiveness while maintaining their religious and cultural identity. Despite this urgency, empirical studies examining how value-based transformational management operates in emerging Islamic universities remain limited, particularly within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-affiliated institutions, such as Universitas Ma’arif Lampung (UMALA). This study investigates transformational management practices at UMALA, a newly established Islamic university, by examining how strategic leadership, internal quality assurance, cultural integration, and international collaboration function as interrelated pillars of institutional transformation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with university leaders and academic staff, document analysis of strategic plans, quality assurance reports, and cooperation agreements, as well as participant observation of institutional activities. The findings reveal that UMALA’s strategic leadership is deeply grounded in NU values of tawassuth (moderation), tasamuh (tolerance), and tawazun (balance), which shape participatory governance and ethical decision-making. The implementation of a digitally supported Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) has strengthened academic accountability, improved accreditation outcomes, and fostered a research-oriented culture. Cultural integration is systematically embedded in the curriculum and campus life, reinforcing institutional identity while supporting modernization. Furthermore, sustained national and international collaborations have expanded UMALA’s academic visibility and contributed to its regional and global engagement. This study highlights the need for developing context-sensitive, value-based management models in Islamic higher education. It contributes to the discussion on how faith-based universities can achieve sustainable academic excellence and global relevance without compromising cultural authenticity.

Abstract

In today's era of digital disruption, mastery of financial literacy and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is a crucial competency for students to face complex global economic challenges. The integration of religious values into social science disciplines is seen as an effective, creative pedagogical strategy for building both character and analytical intelligence in students. This research is motivated by the lack of economics teaching materials in Madrasah Aliyah (MA) that can bridge modern economic theory with Islamic ethical foundations, as previous studies tended to separate the national curriculum and spiritual values. This study focuses on evaluating how integrated modules can impact the development of students' cognitive and affective aspects in understanding contemporary economic phenomena. The main objective of the research is to develop and test the feasibility and practicality of an economics module based on the integration of the Qur'an and Hadith at MA Sirojul Hikmah. Using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) Research and Development (R&D) model, this research involved validation by material and media experts, as well as a pilot test on 10th-grade students. The results showed that the module was deemed highly feasible by experts and received positive feedback from both teachers and students. Key findings identified that the use of sacred narratives as scaffolding in solving economic problems significantly increased learning enthusiasm and understanding of market ethics. The implications of this research confirm that reconstructing the economics syllabus through an integrative approach not only meets curriculum needs but also provides a pragmatic solution for developing students' moral resilience amidst the digital economy.

Abstract

The rapid shifts in the modern educational landscape have sparked growing concern about integrating moral values and academic success in Islamic elementary schools. This study aims to investigate the extent to which religious character and self-discipline serve as significant predictors of academic excellence among students in Islamic primary education. Employing a quantitative research design with a correlational approach, data were collected from a sample of students using Likert-scale questionnaires to measure character traits and standardized academic records to evaluate performance. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationships among variables. The findings reveal that both religious character and self-discipline have a positive and significant impact on students' academic achievement, with self-discipline emerging as the stronger predictor. These results suggest that high levels of spiritual adherence and personal consistency foster a conducive environment for cognitive development. In conclusion, fostering moral and behavioral discipline is essential for holistic student development. Schools are encouraged to integrate character-building programs into the core curriculum to sustain long-term academic excellence.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding the role of local traditions in building religious moderation in multicultural societies. The tahlilan tradition, a religious practice of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) community to pray for the deceased, is often debated. However, in Papan Rejo Village, this tradition actually serves as a social glue among residents of different religions. This study aims to analyze the influence of the tahlilan tradition on community life, identify its positive values, and explore its role in realizing religious moderation. The research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The research location was Papan Rejo Village, Abung Timur District, North Lampung Regency. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, including religious leaders, community leaders, and residents from various religious backgrounds. Data collection techniques included participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that the tahlilan tradition has become an integral part of community life, containing values of togetherness, mutual cooperation, friendship, and tolerance. This tradition plays an important role in realizing religious moderation through practices of mutual respect, interfaith participation, and conflict resolution based on local wisdom. Thus, tahlilan not only functions as a religious ritual but also as social capital to build harmony.
