Abstract

This study explores how students who are blind from birth comprehend and form semantic concepts, focusing specifically on the notion of a "visual lexicon." By investigating the development and understanding of semantic concepts in these students, this study aims to reveal how blind students interpret meanings usually derived from visual experiences and adapt them through alternative sensory inputs. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The data were collected from observation and interview The data source of this research consists of 21 visual vocabulary words, categorized into three groups: nouns that can be touched, nouns that cannot be touched, and adjectives. The data of this research revealed that first and third-grade students use definitions and paraphrases in conceptualizing the semantics of visual vocabulary, while fifth and sixth-grade students use classification, naming, and definitions. In acquiring the semantic concepts of visual vocabulary, there is a shift from sight to hearing and touch. Since blind children lack visual input, their language acquisition, particularly in semantic concepts, relies solely on experiences conveyed through spoken information from others. Therefore, the study's results are expected to support curriculum development for language teaching tailored to blind students and contribute more broadly to educational and linguistic insights for the visually impaired.

The experimental group participated in sessions incorporating arcade games designed to teach figurative speech, while the control group followed traditional learning methods. Data was collected through pre- and post-intervention tests measuring students' understanding, along with a questionnaire evaluating their perceptions of arcade games as a learning tool. Statistical analysis was used to compare the differences in understanding between the two groups, providing knowledge into the effectiveness of arcade games in improving students' comprehension of figurative speech. The main finding from this research is that the use of arcade games significantly improves high school students' understanding of figurative speech and the students’ response toward the arcade game is mostly positive. The results suggest that arcade games can be a more effective and engaging method for teaching figurative speech compared to conventional approaches.

Abstract

This study examines the intersection between institutional academic requirements and the linguistic challenges faced by undergraduate art students concerning the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In many Indonesian universities, TOEFL is mandated as a condition for graduation, positioning it as a vital component of academic success. However, for students in non-English disciplines, especially the arts, this requirement often poses a significant barrier due to limited exposure to English in their coursework. This research adopts a qualitative approach through semi-structured questionnaire and interviews with 43 art students to explore perceptions, preparation strategies, and motivational dynamics related to TOEFL. Using thematic analysis, key findings reveal that while students acknowledge the importance of TOEFL for future academic and professional opportunities, they frequently lack the necessary linguistic preparation, support, and test-taking strategies. Challenges such as inadequate vocabulary, low familiarity with standardized test formats, test-related anxiety, and limited integration of English in the art curriculum emerged prominently. Furthermore, the study identifies a predominance of extrinsic motivation such as graduation requirements and employment prospects rather than intrinsic interest in language mastery. These findings suggest a disconnect between institutional expectations and the lived academic experiences of art students. The study recommends incorporating English for Specific Purposes programs tailored to the arts, greater institutional support through preparatory workshops, and the integration of English into creative academic learning. Addressing these factors is crucial to enhancing both compliance with graduation standards and the development of functional English proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the TAR technique (Dive, Observe, Arrange) on the descriptive writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMK Willem Iskander. Although the curriculum for vocational high schools requires students at this level to be able to produce descriptive texts, their writing proficiency remains below the expected standard. One contributing factor is the use of conventional teaching strategies that do not stimulate students’ creativity or active involvement in the learning process. The TAR technique, grounded in contextual learning principles, encourages an active, meaningful, and engaging learning environment by positioning students as the main actors in the classroom. The study employed an experimental method using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research population consisted of 128 students across four classes, and a total of 32 students were selected as the sample. The findings revealed that prior to the implementation of the TAR technique, students’ descriptive writing ability was categorized as fair, with a mean score of 69.12. After the intervention, students’ performance improved to the good category with a mean score of 76.75. Statistical analysis produced a two-tailed significance value of 0.002, which is lower than the threshold of α = 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, confirming that the TAR technique has a significant effect on students’ ability to write descriptive texts.
