Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interference of the Indonesian language with the use of English by hotel and restaurant staff in the tourist area of Jakabaring Sport Center, Palembang. The focus of the study includes grammatical and phonological interference patterns influenced by the use of regional languages, especially the Palembang dialect, in professional communication. The results showed that interference occurred significantly, with four main points of word selection inference, phonological interference, grammatical inference, and cause of inference. The discussion identified that the leading causes of interference were the lack of formal training, the dominance of regional languages, and the lack of a work environment that supports English language practice. These findings highlight the importance of locally-based English training design to improve staff communication competencies. The study concluded that language interference can be minimized through continuous training and the integration of learning technologies, ultimately improving the service quality of the hospitality and restaurant sectors.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of teaching contextual clues on enhancing inferential reading skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two intact classes of intermediate EFL students who were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received specialised instruction on recognising and using contextual clues to draw inferences while reading, whereas the control group continued with traditional reading instruction without a focus on inferential strategies. Both groups participated in pre- and post-tests to measure their inferential reading abilities. The results showed a significant improvement for the experimental group, whose average score increased from 65.97 on the pre-test to 86.72 on the post-test. In contrast, the control group’s mean score rose only slightly, from 68.44 to 73.59, with minimal change in standard deviation, indicating limited progress using standard teaching methods. These outcomes emphasize the importance of integrating contextual clue instruction into EFL reading curricula to develop stronger inference-making and overall reading comprehension skills. The study highlights the significant benefits that such instructional strategies offer EFL learners and suggests that curriculum designers and educators should consider incorporating these approaches to better support students’ language development and academic success.

Abstract

Parental involvement is a critical determinant of early childhood education (ECE) outcomes, yet it remains persistently low in underserved urban communities in Indonesia due to socioeconomic pressures, low parental self-efficacy, and fragmented school-community linkages. This study employed a qualitative community-based participatory action research (PAR) design to co-develop, implement, and evaluate a culturally grounded parental involvement program in a densely populated, low-income neighborhood in North Jakarta. Over eight months, 32 parents, 4 ECE teachers, and 2 community facilitators engaged in three iterative cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and reflective journals, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The PAR process catalyzed four interconnected outcomes: heightened parental self-efficacy, richer home learning environments, improved parent-teacher communication, and the emergence of informal community support networks. A pre-post involvement checklist corroborated qualitative shifts, showing marked increases in all involvement indicators. The findings suggest that a participatory, asset-based approach can transform parental involvement from a prescriptive school demand into a shared community practice, thereby strengthening ECE outcomes in marginalized urban settings. The study offers a replicable model for fostering sustainable family-community-school partnerships in similar resource-constrained contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

The study investigates how this integration affects comprehension, critical thinking, student engagement, learner autonomy, and the particular difficulties that students face using thematic analysis. Student perspectives, classroom observations, and classroom records were used to collect data. Using detailed information from ten informants with a range of skill levels, this qualitative case study examines the impact of combining language and content in academic reading for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in higher education. The results show that students' reading comprehension is much improved by contextualizing reading materials, structuring instruction, and connecting the subject to real-world scenarios. Giving students the chance to relate academic material to their own experiences increases their engagement and sense of autonomy. However, issues with technical jargon, a lack of prior knowledge, and the interpretation of statistical or graphical data remain obstacles. Scaffolded analysis, modeling of reading strategies, and pre-teaching of specialist terminology are among the effective tactics identified. These findings highlight the importance of adaptable, targeted teaching strategies for EFL students. Such interventions are essential for fostering critical thinking, academic literacy, and independence. Integrating language and content supports EFL learners in overcoming reading challenges and achieving academic success.
