Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of online learning on students’ learning motivation in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) among eighth-grade students at SMP Islam NW Gayu during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing a quantitative case study design, data were collected through validated questionnaires based on the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The sample consisted of 25 students with access to digital devices, selected purposively from a population of 48. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to determine the effectiveness levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation indicators. Results showed that online learning was moderately effective (52%) in sustaining students’ motivation, with extrinsic motivation (56%) higher than intrinsic motivation (48%). Family support, teacher feedback, and peer interaction were identified as the main drivers of engagement. However, limited autonomy, technological barriers, and reduced social connectedness hindered intrinsic motivation and active participation. Emotional comfort and competence-related factors, such as self-efficacy in using digital tools, also influenced students’ engagement. The findings align with Self-Determination Theory (SDT), suggesting that online physical education can foster learning motivation when autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs are fulfilled. Integrating hybrid learning, autonomy-supportive pedagogy, and continuous teacher development is recommended to enhance motivation and engagement in future online and blended PE programs

Abstract

ABSTRACT Badminton requires good physical ability and body stability, especially in producing fast, powerful, and accurate smash shots. One of the important components supporting the quality of a smash is arm muscle strength and core stability because both play a role in force transfer and body control during the execution of the shot. This study aimed to analyze the effect of plank variation exercises on arm muscle strength and badminton smash ability of PB Klywon players in 2025. The study employed an experimental method using a one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 22 male players selected through a purposive sampling technique. The training program was conducted over 16 sessions with a frequency of three times per week through several exercise variations, including basic plank, front plank, side plank, leg plank, and plank arm reach. Data were collected using an arm muscle strength test and a badminton smash accuracy test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, homogeneity test, and paired sample t-test. The results showed that plank variation exercises significantly improved arm muscle strength and smash ability with a significance value of p<0.001. These findings indicate that body weight-based exercises can be used as a simple alternative physical training method to improve body stability, arm strength, and the effectiveness of badminton smash performance.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between arm muscle strength and hand-eye coordination with long serve ability in badminton among extracurricular students at SMAN 1 Gerung. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 30 extracurricular participants who completed three measurements: a 1-minute push-up test for arm muscle strength, a 30-second wall-toss test for hand-eye coordination, and a long-serve test with 10 attempts. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Spearman correlation, and multiple linear regression. The findings showed that arm muscle strength had a significant positive relationship with long serve ability (rho = 0.961; p < 0.001), hand-eye coordination had a significant positive relationship with long serve ability (rho = 0.949; p < 0.001), and both variables jointly showed a significant relationship with long serve ability (R = 0.927; R2 = 0.859; F = 82.500; p < 0.001). In conclusion, arm muscle strength and hand-eye coordination are important predictors of badminton long serve ability; therefore, extracurricular coaching should integrate arm strength training, visual-motor coordination drills, and target-based long serve practice. Abstract

Agility is a key physical component in badminton because players must accelerate, decelerate, change direction, maintain balance, and return to a ready position within a very short time. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and agility among students participating in a badminton extracurricular program at SMAN 1 Kediri. A quantitative correlational design was used with total sampling involving 30 active participants. BMI was obtained from direct measurements of body weight and height and recalculated using the formula body weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Agility was measured using the Illinois Agility Run Test and recorded in seconds. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics through descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk normality testing, scatterplot examination, and Spearman correlation because agility time was not normally distributed. The participants had a mean BMI of 21.75 ± 3.13 kg/m² and a mean agility time of 18.74 ± 2.58 seconds. The BMI data were normally distributed (p = 0.147), whereas agility time was not normally distributed (p < 0.001). Spearman correlation showed a significant positive relationship between BMI and agility time (rho = 0.667; p < 0.001). Because agility performance was evaluated based on completion time, this positive correlation indicates that higher BMI tended to be associated with longer test completion time and lower agility performance. These findings suggest that BMI monitoring can be used as an initial component of physical condition evaluation in school-based badminton training, although agility should also be interpreted alongside speed, lower-limb strength, balance, coordination, and training experience
