Abstract

Background: The cosmetics industry continues to grow with increasing interest in natural ingredients. Gotu kola leaves (Centella Asiatica) contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin repair effects, making them potential ingredients for face toners. Toners refresh and balance the skin's pH, while glycerin acts as a humectant to maintain moisture, but its concentration affects the stability and comfort of the preparation. This study formulated a gotu kola extract face toner with varying glycerin concentrations and evaluated its stability through a cycling test (±4 °C and ±40 °C, six cycles). This test is important for assessing the physical and chemical quality of the product while meeting cosmetic registration requirements. Purpose: 1.To determine the compounds contained in gotu kola leaf extract (Centella Asiatica). 2. To determine whether there is an effect on physical quality and stability in variations of glycerin in gotu kola leaf extract (Centella Asiatica) face toner formulations. 3. To determine the face toner formulation that has good stability with variations in glycerin concentration.. Method: Pegagan leaves (Centella asiatica) were extracted using the maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent.   The extract obtained was subjected to phytochemical testing and TLC testing, followed by the preparation of formulations according to the predetermined formulation. A cycling test was conducted for 12 days with 6 cycles, followed by physical quality testing of the face toner formulation.Results: Pegagan extract compounds contain alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. There were no significant differences between formulations 1, 2, and 3 with variations in humectants (glycerin). Formulation F2 showed the most optimal stability because both viscosity and pH were relatively stable during six storage cycles. Conclusion: Based on this study, it was found that face toner preparations containing gotu kola leaf extract (Centella Asiatica) at concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 6% had fairly good physical stability parameters.

Abstract

Background: Fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) are known to contain various secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids, making them potentially useful as ingredients in herbal cosmetic formulations, especially lotions. Triethanolamine acts as an emulsion stabilizer for oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Variations in triethanolamine concentration are expected to affect the physical stability of the lotion, thus further research is needed to optimize the formulation. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effect of triethanolamine concentration on the physical stability of formulated pandan leaf lotion, and to determine the triethanolamine concentration that is most stable and effective. Method: Fragrant pandan leaves were extracted with ethanol through maceration. The lotion preparation consisted of 4 formulations with different concentrations of triethanolamine (0%, 2.5%, 3%, and 3.5%). Physical stability was evaluated through organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and type of emulsion under room temperature, cooling, and storage conditions for 6 cycles. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, if the data were not normal, the Kruskal–Wallis test was used. Results: The preparation of lotion from the extract of fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) in formula 0, formula I, formula II, and formula III has physical characteristics and stability that comply with SNI standards Conclusion: The lotion preparation with 3.5% triethanolamine concentration shows the most stable lotion properties compared to formulation 0, I, and formula II.

Abstract

Background: A major factor in the development of acne is bacterial activity within infected hair follicles. One of the bacteria involved in acne formation is Staphylococcus epidermidis. Star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa carambola L.) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and saponins, which can act as antibacterial agents. Purpose: This study aims to formulate gel preparations of star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa carambola L.) at concentrations of 3%, 4%, and 5%, and to evaluate their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Method: Star fruit leaves were extracted using the maceration method with 70% ethanol. The extract was formulated into gel preparations at concentrations of 3%, 4%, and 5%, followed by antibacterial activity testing against Staphylococcus epidermidis using the well diffusion method. Results: The study showed that the star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa carambola L.) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. The gel formulations exhibited antibacterial activity with inhibition zones of 8,61 mm, 9.48 mm, and 11,50 mm for the 3%, 4%, and 5% concentrations, respectively. Conclusion: The gel preparation of star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa carambola L.) with the highest antibacterial activity was the Formula 3 gel containing 5% extract
