Abstract

In competitive sports, various factors influence the outcome of the game. It is believed that the mental toughness dimension is an aspect that contributes greatly to sports achievement in practice. However, unfortunately the condition of mental aspects of teenage athletes in Papua is limited explored. Therefore, the purpose of this community service was to provide assistance for the local government of Papua Province, especially the Sports and Youth Division, in providing information on the mental toughness conditions of adolescent athletes at PPLP/D Papua. The activity was carried out in three stages, namely preparation, implementation, and reporting. The results of the service found that the confidence dimension appeared to be greater than the other dimensions, while the commitment dimension was the dimension with the lowest value.  For other dimensions such as positive cognition, constancy, and control were relatively in the middle. In general, the pattern of mental toughness of Papuan youth athletes appears disproportionate. Thus, mental coaching or training should provide to improve the mental quality of athletes

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce English language learning which combines several language skills using fictional stories, considering many English teachers still confused about training students’ listening, reading, listening, understanding and writing skills through the use of fictional stories related to the material, learning activities, and learning methods. Developing the ability to hear, read, pay attention, understand and write what they understand is an ability or skill that is no longer popular, considering the increasing craze of students using gadgets made them interact less with each others. SMP YPK Hedam as a christian school, has students who are still low in language skills even though it is located in Jayapuracity  which is quite advanced in technology. This school has  90% of whom  native Papuan, which makes it the backbone of forming generation of Papuans who are good at hearing, reading, observing, understanding and writing down what they hear or read well in English. This activity was carried out for  one month, including deepening fictional story material that was appropriate to the characteristics and abilitites of students at SMP YPK Hedam, determining various and varied learning activities, and also fun and effective teaching methods for students at SMP YPK Hedam. Abstrak Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan memperkenalkan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang memadukan beberapa keterampilan bahasa menggunakan cerita fiksi, mengingat masih banyak guru bahasa Inggris yang kebingungan dalam melatih kemampuan mendengar, membaca, menyimak, memahami, dan menulis peserta didik melalui penggunaan cerita fiksi yang menarik terkait materi, kegiatan belajar, dan metode pembelajarannya. Mengembangkan kemampuan mendengar, membaca, menyimak, memahami dan menulis apa yang dipahaminya merupakan kemampuan atau keterampilan yang tidak populer lagi, mengingat meningkatnya kegandrungan peserta didik dalam menggeluti gadget sehingga kurang berinteraksi dengan sesama. SMP YPK Hedam sebagai sekolah berafiliasi keagamaan yaitu Yayasan Pendidikan Kristen memiliki karakteristik peserta didik yang masih rendah dalam keterampilan berbahasa padahal berlokasi di Kota Jayapura yang sudah cukup maju dalam teknologi dan modernisasi. Sekolah ini memiliki cukup banyak peserta didik 90% orang asli Papua (OAP) yang menjadikannya tulang punggung pembentukan generasi Papua yang berkualitas baik dalam mendengar, membaca, menyimak, memahami, dan menuliskan apa yang didengarnya atau dibacanya tersebut dengan baik. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan selama kurang lebih satu bulan termasuk pendalaman materi cerita fiksi yang sesuai dengan karakteristik dan kemampuan peserta didik di SMP YPK Hedam, penentuan kegiatan belajar yang beragam dan variatif, dan juga metode mengajar yang menyenangkan dan efektif bagi peserta didik di SMP YPK Hedam. Kata Kunci: Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, Cerita Fiksi.
