Abstract

Abstract

Social media is a platform used by feminist activists for activism. It overcomes spatial and temporal barriers, and helps spread the movement's message more quickly and efficiently. The participatory culture encourages the feminist movement to develop more massively. Many argue that social media helps feminist activists to empower women. Related to the statement, this study observes how activism practices in social media represent women's voices and problems. This study also seeks to reveal the problems in the movement. The researcher observed five accounts of feminist activists on Instagram (@Indonesiafeminis, @lawanpatriarki, @perempuanfeminis, @muslimahfeminis, @perempuan.merdeka). Through the virtual ethnography method, the researcher found a representation problem when digital feminist accounts published the problems experienced by women through their content. These accounts only represent middle-class women's problems. There is also an ethical problem because these accounts tend to be reactive by ignoring the ethics of doing activism.

Abstract

Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan (2019), a film directed by Ernest Prakasa, is successful in reaching the box office, with an attracting audience of more than 2 million. This film is an adaptation of a novel with the same title written by Meira Anastasia and Ernest Prakasa. This film has the potential to educate the audience about the body and the dangers of body shaming, but eventually, it just gets back to mere commercialization. Instead of changing the mindset, what is happening is precisely upholding today’s beauty standards.

Abstract

This article is motivated by the phenomenon of the ownership of multiple accounts on Instagram among teenagers. Previous research mentioned that a second Instagram account is used to express oneself without worrying that the identity of the users will be recognized by the public. Users feel they can upload anything on Instagram’s second accounts without following Instagram rules’ pressure of perfection. The second accounts become a sphere for users to perform their self-authenticity. The researchers inquire how teenagers use and manage their multiple Instagram accounts as a sphere for exploring themselves. Reflecting on the practice of surveillance between users through social media, including Instagram, the researchers argue that second Instagram accounts function as the sphere for pseudo-liberations for its users. Hence, the researchers also question how freedom is experienced in that sphere. The researchers use digital ethnography to get the answers to the questions. As a result, since the self is socially constructed and self-authentic, the researchers found that second accounts are not liberating their users. The constructed self-authenticity has shifted from the control of their parents and other adults; to their peers’ surveillance.

Abstract

Adolescence is a social category considered as apolitical, hedonist, consumptive, and uncritical. They often become the object of socialization and education of morality from adult. Many social institutions, including the media have subjugated their desire in the name of sex education. Hai magazine-segmented its product for teenage boys-displayed sexual contents for sex education in its articles. In those articles, Hai magazine has presented information relating to dominant sexual norms. This paper focuses on how Hai magazine has built discourse of gender differences in its articles. Using critical discourse analysis, the researcher revealed the attempt of Hai magazine to construct the ideal relationship of teenage boys and girls. The construction cannot be separated from the politics of Hai magazine to accommodate the parents’ interest following sexual normative and conservative discourse. At the same time, Hai also supports sexual liberalism discourse, which becomes the part of media interest as cultural industry. As a result, Hai magazine has performed ambivalence idea of gender differences. The ambivalence is indicated from the idea of sexual attraction, the division of sexual roles, and emphatic strategy.

Abstract

Jim Taihuttu's film "De Oost" explores the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia and has drawn attention from researchers interested in how Javanese people are portrayed in cinema. The study employs Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to analyze the film's representations, revealing that Javanese characters are frequently depicted in stereotypical and subordinate roles that are influenced by Western perspectives. This analysis examines both the apparent and deeper meanings of the representations. Although certain sequences endeavor to demonstrate the complexity and agency of Javanese characters, these representations continue to primarily perpetuate preexisting stereotypes, underscoring the necessity of more precise and equitable media representations. In the film "De Oost," Javanese characters are predominantly depicted in a manner that aligns with the Orientalist perspective, which implies that they are frequently portrayed as stereotypical and of lesser significance. The majority of Javanese characters are depicted in stories that are dominated by Western perspectives, despite the fact that certain sequences attempt to demonstrate their depth and strength. This means that even though there are moments of resistance, the overall portrayal doesn't significantly challenge the dominant narrative.

Abstract

Children's novels are one of the communication media that has not been studied much in Indonesia compared to research related to adolescents and adults. The contents of children's books are inseparable from the author's ideology. One of them is gender ideology, which has long been constructed in society. Mata di Tanah Melus is a semi-fantasy novel published in early 2018. This study aims to see gender construction through signs in the story. This study used Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to obtain denotative and connotative meanings. It then forms myths. The results of this study indicate that there is an ambivalent gender construction, especially towards gender roles and gender stereotypes, that gives rise to the myth of benevolent sexism. On the one hand, women in this novel are involved in a patriarchal culture. Women have the opportunity and freedom, but they are still not free from dependence and the dominant role of men.

Abstract

Mental health understanding among generation Z is quite good. However, this is not followed by their parents. Due to the lack of mental health awareness, parents of generation Z cannot be a support system for their children. The high suicide rate among adolescents that has caused Indonesia to have a suicide emergency is an indication of this issue. Therefore, we feel responsible for providing a solution for it. We started it with the environment closest to us. Hence, we arranged program with the purpose to build awareness of the young people’s parents about mental health issue. The program aimed to increase awareness and support among ‘Aisyiyah Tamantirto Utara Branch Leadership members regarding adolescent mental health, enhancing their ability to identify symptoms, respond appropriately, and provide support. The program utilized lectures on the concepts, causes, impacts, and solutions to mental health challenges, incorporating interactive, two-way discussions. Post-test results showed a significant increase in average scores (2.82), demonstrating the program’s success in raising awareness about adolescent mental health among participants.

Abstract

Domestic violence cases are increasingly being exposed in various news outlets,  reporting women are disproportionately affected by both physical and sexual violence. The extensive coverage of these incidents represents a significant advancement in empowering women's positions. Nevertheless, given the enduring influence of patriarchal society within the media business, it is necessary to do a more in-depth analysis of how women are depicted while reporting domestic violence, especially from visual representations. The author investigated the news reporting of domestic violence from Kompas.com and Detik.com during 2022-2023. The analysis revealed that there is ambiguity in representing women as the victims of domestic violence. The two outlets' progressive approach is evident in the narrative, as they position the women as the subjects. However, from the visual images, both outlets continue to perpetuate the notion of women as victims by portraying them in a prejudiced manner.
