Abstract

Abstract

The use of plowing machines is an important innovation in horticultural farming systems because it can increase land efficiency and productivity. This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of plowing machines in accelerating the soil cultivation process and its impact on increasing the productivity of horticultural farmers in the Jaya Makmur Farmers Group. A descriptive approach was used by observing the plowing machine's working process and comparing it with traditional soil cultivation methods commonly used by farmers. Data were obtained through field observations and interviews with farmer group members. The results showed that the use of plowing machines increased the speed of soil cultivation up to ten times faster than traditional methods. In addition, plowing machines resulted in more even soil inversion, creating more optimal soil conditions for horticultural plant growth. These findings confirm that the use of plowing machines not only saves time and labor but also has the potential to increase crop productivity through more efficient soil management. Thus, the use of plowing machines is a strategic solution to support increased efficiency and yields in horticultural cultivation.

Abstract

Palm oil frond waste is a type of agricultural waste that is quite abundant in Pematang Gubernur Village, Muara Bangkahulu District, Bengkulu City. To date, this waste has not been optimally utilized and tends to be discarded, thus potentially polluting the environment. This community service activity aims to improve community knowledge and skills in processing palm oil frond waste into compost through hands-on training (learning by doing). The implementation method includes identifying partner needs, counseling, technical training in composting, practical assistance, as well as evaluation and follow-up. The results of the activity show an increase in community knowledge and skills in composting, the formation of compost products resulting from the training, the development of training modules, and the formation of community-based compost processing groups. This activity proves that utilizing palm oil frond waste can be an environmentally friendly solution while supporting community food security.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve community food security through the implementation of chili cultivation in polybags in Pematang Gubernur Village, Muara Bangkahulu District, Bengkulu City. The main problems faced by the community at the partner location are limited yard space and high chili prices during certain seasons. Through chili cultivation training in polybags, the community is equipped with knowledge and practical skills ranging from preparing the planting medium, sowing seeds, planting, maintenance, and harvesting. Implementation methods include counseling, live demonstrations, and field assistance. The results of the activity show an increase in community knowledge and motivation in utilizing limited land to grow chili independently. Thus, this activity contributes to supporting household food security and community economic empowerment.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the understanding and skills of school dropouts in Pasar Kerkap Village by providing training in charcoal production using technology derived from used oil stoves. The program is designed using a participatory training approach based on appropriate technology, emphasizing the active role of participants throughout the process. The activity begins with a preparatory phase that includes coordination with village officials, a survey to find participants, the provision of tools and materials, and the development of training modules. Next, a socialization session is held discussing the concepts of renewable energy, biomass waste processing, and how used oil stoves work through interactive lectures and equipment demonstrations. The main part of this activity is hands-on practice in charcoal production, which includes raw material preparation, the charcoal-making process, cooling, packaging, and a simulation of calculating production costs as a form of entrepreneurship education. The mentoring and evaluation phase is carried out to ensure that participants can apply the technology independently, as well as to assess product quality and the sustainability of the program. The results of this activity include the formation of a skilled youth group, environmentally friendly charcoal products with market value, and training modules and videos as learning tools. This program is expected to encourage economic independence and increase environmental awareness by utilizing waste productively.

Abstract

Bengkulu City is a region with a high risk of tsunami due to its location adjacent to the Indian Ocean and its position in an active subduction zone. The low level of public knowledge regarding disaster mitigation increases the potential for casualties in the event of a tsunami. This community service activity aimed to enhance the understanding, awareness, and preparedness of residents in Pagar Dewa Village, Selebar District, Bengkulu City, regarding tsunami hazards through mitigation-based education and socialization. The implementation methods included socialization (counseling), interactive discussion and dialogue, presentation of evacuation routes, and information on prevention and emergency response. The results showed a significant increase in public knowledge and preparedness, demonstrated by participants’ ability to recognize early tsunami signs and take appropriate evacuation actions. Residents also showed high enthusiasm and emphasized the importance of ongoing training to maintain mitigation awareness. This activity successfully built synergy between the university, local government, and the community in reducing disaster risks in coastal and lowland areas around Bengkulu City. Therefore, tsunami mitigation education is a strategic step toward creating a disaster-resilient community and strengthening readiness for future natural threats.

Abstract

Creative thinking can be fostered through simple things, such as handicrafts. Creative thinking can be fostered through simple things, such as handicrafts. Crafts can be interpreted as the result of a skill or craft that utilizes materials around us. One of the easiest handicrafts that can be done is making bags from paper. Paper bags are currently trending in Indonesia, especially in Bengkulu as a response to global warming. Problems identified among partners include ignorance in making paper bags, lack of packaging innovation. This community service aims to improve understanding of the use and management of paper bag businesses. The action steps that will be implemented are: 1) action preparation, 2) paper bag production training, and 3) monitoring and evaluation. Training is carried out using the sampling method and direct training for partners. The evaluation results show that the partners' understanding and skills have increased by an average of 45%. The partners already have an understanding and skills in the production and management of paper bag businesses.
