Abstract

Obesity is a complex and severe problem whose prevalence has increased significantly in the last few decades, posing a significant risk to human health. Various weight loss strategies are currently used, and different weight loss supplements are widely available. However, the effectiveness of some of these food supplements is still unknown. Thus, alternative therapy with a pharmaconutrition macronutrient approach is needed. A scoping review is necessary to scope the current article, summarize the scientific data, and guide future investigation into the potential use of catechin-rich gambir for obesity management. Results: Four databases were searched systematically. The scoping review covered articles published after 2013. A total of 251 articles were collected, and five studies (2 experimental studies) met the inclusion criteria. The synthesis results show that catechin-rich gambir has the potential a function in obesity management therapy. This mechanism, through the anti-obesity effect of catechins, is related to the uptake and synthesis of adipose tissue in obese individuals. Conclusions: Available evidence recommends that the catechin content in gambir has the potential for pharmaconutrition therapy for obesity management.

Abstract

Tikus dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok yaitu KN (tikus sehat), K- (tikus obesitas), KP (tikus obesitas diberi Orlistat 10,8 mg/200gBB/hari), P1 (tikus obesitas diberi ekstrak gambir 20 mg/200gBB/hari), P2 (tikus obesitas diberi ekstrak gambir 40 mg/200gBB/hari), dan P3 (tikus obesitas diberi ekstrak gambir 80 mg/200gBB/hari). Gambir contains catechins with anti-obesity properties that can be used as an alternative therapy. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effect of gambier extract intervention on body weight and leptin in obese rat models. Methods: This research was laboratory research with a pre-post-test design. The research subjects were male Wistar rats with a total of 36 rats. Rats were divided into 6 groups, namely KN (healthy rats), K- (obese rats), KP (obese rats given Orlistat 10.8 mg/200gBB/day), P1 (obese rats given gambir extract 20 mg/200gBW/day), P2 (obese rats given gambir extract 40 mg/200gBW/day), and P3 (obese rats given gambir extract 80 mg/200gBW/day). Research data were analyzed using SPSS software version 23.0. The different group tests were carried out using One-way ANOVA if the data were normally distributed and Kruskall Wallis if the data were not normally distributed. Results: The results showed a significant difference in mean body weight (p=0.000) and leptin levels (p=0.001) between groups of rats. The P3 group had the lowest average body weight and leptin levels, surpassing the K+ group and approaching the KN group. Conclusions: Gambir extract intervention at 80mg/200gBW/day in obese rats can decrease weight gain and reduce leptin levels.KEYWORDS : body weight; catechin; gambir; leptin; obesity

Abstract

The trend of unhealthy eating and the careless consumption of snacks among elementary school children remains a major nutritional issue in various countries worldwide, including Indonesia. Children tend to choose food based on their preferences. The shift in trends toward consuming snacks carelessly negatively affects children's nutritional status and health. This activity aimed to increase students’ knowledge and awareness about the importance of choosing healthy snacks and avoiding careless snacking habits. Nutrition education on snacking carelessly was the main emphasis of the community service programs. Thirty-sixth-grade students from SDN Bandar Lor II participated in the activity. PowerPoint and leaflets were used to communicate the content. The education session lasted for one hour. Pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate the results. The results of the activity showed that the participants engaged in the event in a participatory and active manner. The nutrition education on snacking carelessly effectively increased the students' knowledge by 4.6 points. Interactive methods, the use of infographic media, and hands-on practice enhanced participation and motivation in the children's learning process. Nutrition education on snacking carelessly effectively increased the students' knowledge.

Abstract

University students are a population vulnerable to dietary pattern shifts and reduced physical activity due to academic demands and lifestyle changes. These factors may contribute to both undernutrition and overnutrition. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the association between dietary habits, physical activity, and nutritional status among undergraduate students at Universitas Sebelas Maret. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving 150 students selected via simple random sampling from five faculties. Validated questionnaires assessed snacking frequency, late-night eating habits, and physical activity. Nutritional status was determined using Body Mass Index (BMI). Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests. Significant associations were found between nutritional status and snacking frequency (p = 0.000), late-night eating (p = 0.046), and physical activity frequency (p = 0.028). Students who frequently snacked, consumed meals late at night, and engaged in low physical activity tended to exhibit overweight or obesity.Unhealthy dietary behaviors and insufficient physical activity are significantly associated with increased nutritional status among university students. Targeted health promotion and preventive interventions are essential to foster healthier lifestyles in this population.
