Abstract

To determine the free-radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content of the ethanol extract of Poinsettia leaves (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.) from Lombok Island, we used the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl method and expressed the total phenolic content as gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per gram of ethanol extract. The results show the strong antioxidant activity (79.77 ppm) of the ethanol extract of red Poinsettia leaves and the moderate antioxidant activity of green Poinsettia leaves (118.350 ppm). The ethanol extracts of red and green Poinsettia leaves possessed an average of 63.276 ± 0.228 and 22.715 ± 0.090 mg GAE/g extract total phenolic contents, respectively. In addition, the ethanol extracts of red and green Poinsettia leaves exhibited moderate and strong free-radical inhibitory activities, respectively. These findings indicate that color affects the antioxidant ability of leaves and their phenolic content.

Abstract

Prenylated 1,3-dihydroxyxanthone has been successfully synthesized using Prenyl bromide and KOH. Characterization of the synthesized compound using Infra Red (IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR) showed that monosubstituted c-prenylation was occurred at carbon number 2 to form 1,3-dihydroxy-2-prenylxanthone. The synthesis result was a yellow-brown paste with a yield of 43.09%. This prenylated 1,3-dihydroxyxanthone had moderate antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli with an inhibition zone > 5 mm at a concentration of 15%.

Abstract

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly nanoparticle synthesis, as a viable strategy for pollution control, has prompted an exploration of green chemistry methods. This study meticulously investigates the synthesis of copper nanoparticles utilizing tobacco leaf extract obtained through both cold and hot extraction techniques. The primary focus lies in scrutinizing the impact of various solvents employed for plant extracts and metal ion solutions on reduction dynamics and particle size. The study employs UV-Vis and phytochemical analyses to discern differences in chemical composition and efficacy, particularly between the water and methanol-water systems, despite their resemblance in UV-Vis spectra. Intriguingly, the results unveil that the choice of solvent significantly influences the particle size distribution and stability of colloidal nanoparticles. The methanol-water system, in particular, yields smaller, more uniform particles compared to other solvent systems. This research sheds light on the pivotal role of solvent selection in nanoparticle synthesis, emphasizing its profound impact on both the reduction process and the resulting particle size distribution. The findings underscore the nuanced relationship between solvent choice and the characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles, providing valuable insights for optimizing environmentally friendly synthesis methods. Ultimately, this study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on green chemistry approaches for nanoparticle synthesis with implications for pollution control and sustainable materials production.

Abstract

Abstract

The study of secondary metabolites is the core of Natural Product Chemistry. The process of isolating secondary metabolites from Sasambo plants, which are medicinal plants used by indigenous tribes in West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, has the potential to be integrated into the Natural Product Chemistry Practicum. Students learn how to extract, fractionate, purify, and identify the structure of secondary metabolites through Natural Product Chemistry Practicum. With various alternative actions related to the process of isolating secondary metabolites, these laboratory exercises can be utilized to help students improve their decision-making skills. This study aims to investigate the impact of Natural Product Chemistry Practicum Based on Medicinal Plants Sasambo (NPP-MPS) on students' decision-making skills. This is quasi-experimental research with nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest research design. The participants are 63 students who enrolled in 6th semester students of the chemistry education department at one of the state universities in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, for the 2019/2020 academic year, which were divided into experimental and the control classes. The findings show that the NPP-MPS does positively influences students' decision-making skills.

Abstract

Benzophenone was synthesized through a condensation reaction of benzoic acid and phloroglucinol with an Eaton reagent as a catalyst. The percentage of the product was 60%, and it was characterized using FTIR and 1H-NMR. The sunscreen activity was carried out using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to calculate the SPF value. The synthesis result was made in several concentration variations: 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 ppm to measure the SPF values. The results showed that the SPF values were 9.89, 13.39, 17.83, 23.77, and 28.26, respectively. Based on this, it can be concluded that these compounds have biological activity as sunscreen and samples of 200-300 ppm are included in the ultra-category as sunscreen.
