Abstract

Abstract

Dental and oral problems experienced a significant increase from 2007 to 2018. Based on the results of basic health research, dental and oral problems increased from 23.2% to 57.6%. Dental caries is ranked sixth with a prevalence of 60% to 80%. The main cause of dental caries is Streptococcus mutans. The use of mouthwash with synthetic active ingredients can cause side effects. In addition, only a few mouthwashes were able to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The purpose of this study was to make a mouthwash formulation from onion methanol extract and to determine its ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Three mouthwash formulas were made with 10%, 20% and 30% extract concentrations respectively, then physical evaluation was carried out for 14 days on days 0, 7 and 14. Physical evaluation included stability tests (odor, taste, turbidity and precipitate), pH and diameter of inhibition. The results of the formula stability evaluation on day 14 there was a change in formulas 2 and 3 color, but not in formula 1. This was due to differences in the concentration of extracts and the sappans color stability in the formulas. The pH test results for each formula are in the range of 6.0-6.3. A good mouthwash has a pH close to neutral like the pH of the mouth, which is 6-7. The results of the diameter inhibition test ranged from 6-8 mm. A significant difference was seen between the positive controls with formulas 1 and 3, but there was no significant difference between formulas 1 and 3. The conclusion of this study was that the mouthwash of onion methanol extract had the ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria with moderate strength and the best formula was mouthwash with 10% extract concentration.

Abstract

Iron overload (IO) is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of iron in the body, which affects vital organs such as the liver, heart, pancreas, and endocrine tissues. Kwini mango (Mangifera odorata Griff) leaves, which contain mangiferin (a phenolic compound), have the ability to chelate Fe3+ by promoting the oxidation of Fe2+, potentially lowering blood iron levels. This study aimed to explore the potential of kwini mango leaf extract (KMLE) as an in vivo iron chelator for treating IO, using blood samples from an IO patient. The in vivo study assessed the effects of KMLE on ferritin, SGPT, SGOT, BUN, creatinine, and serum hematology levels in blood samples. Additionally, liver and kidney histopathology were examined as markers of iron chelation. The extract's standardization was performed to determine the mangiferin content in KMLE. The in vivo results showed a decrease in ferritin, SGPT, SGOT, BUN, creatinine, and hematological parameters. Comparisons between the KMLE group, deferoxamine group, and mangiferin group indicated a significant reduction in ferritin levels in both the deferoxamine and mangiferin groups when compared to the KMLE group at doses of 50 mg/200 g BW and 100 mg/200 g BW (Asym. Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05). A similar pattern was observed for reductions in SGPT, SGOT, BUN, and creatinine levels at the same doses (Asym. Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the KMLE group at a dose of 200 mg/200 g BW (Asym. Sig. (2-tailed) > 0.05). KMLE demonstrates the potential to reduce serum ferritin, SGOT, SGPT, BUN, creatinine, and improve liver histopathology, suggesting its effectiveness as an iron chelator for treating IO.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a "Live Laboratory," has abundant biological wealth, especially in traditional medicinal plants. The knowledge of these plants has been passed down through generations within communities. However, modernization and societal shifts have contributed to a decline in public understanding of the benefits of medicinal plants. In Pagebangan Village, while 55 types of medicinal plants are recognized, many inhabitants lack detailed knowledge about the specific advantages of each plant. To address this critical knowledge gap, an Android application named ATOBAT was developed. This application was created using Google Sites and MIT App Inventor, both of which do not require advanced programming skills. The primary aim of ATOBAT is to enhance residents' understanding of the medicinal plants available in their environment. This research employs an experimental design utilizing the Research and Development (R&D) methodology, which encompasses the design, development, and evaluation of the application. The evaluation process included validation by media experts and feasibility testing with 92 respondents from the Pagebangan Village community, using purposive sampling and a Likert scale questionnaire. The results indicated a feasibility score of 74% from media experts and 85% from users, confirming that the ATOBAT application effectively enhances community understanding of medicinal plants and their benefits.
