Abstract

Background: The prevalence of periodontal disease in Indonesia reaches 96,58%. Prevotella intermedia is an orange complex bacteria play an important role in periodontitis. One of the therapies for periodontitis disease is the use of antimicrobial mouthwash. Rosella flowers can be used for an alternative therapy for periodontal disease because Rosella flower had been widely used as herbal drink. Purpose: This study aims to find out how rosella flower ethanol extract adheres to prevotella intermedia biofilms. Methods: This research is a laboratory experimental study using the biofilm test method. Rosella flower petals were taken from Balitro in Bogor, West Java. This research was conducted at the FKG Usakti MiCore Laboratory. The ethanol extract of rosella petals was diluted to obtain concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.12% and 1.5%. The wellplate was incubated for 1 hour, 6 hours and 24 hours under anaerobic conditions then read the OD (optical density) using a microplate reader at a wavelength of 49nm.Results: The normality test shows normal data distribution (p>0.05). The ANOVA test showed a significant difference (p>0.05). Post-Hoc test showed significant differences between the concentrations of the ethanol extract of rosella calyx. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of rosella calyx has an effect on inhibiting the attachment of the prevotella intermedia biofilm.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has a high prevalence in the world and Indonesia. There are 2 types of periodontal disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can be caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Minimizing periodontal disease can be done by brushing, flossing, scaling, and using mouthwash that contains antibacterial. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is an herbal plant that contains antibacterial properties, so it can be used as an additional therapy to minimize periodontal disease. The research was conducted in the MiCore laboratory FKG Usakti with the method in this study using an in vitro laboratory experiment using a biofilm assay test with a concentration of 1 g/mL, 0.50 g/mL, 0.25 g/mL, 0.125 g/mL, 0.0625 g/mL, 0.0312 g/mL, 0.015 g/mL. The extract was distributed into well plates, stained with crystal violet, incubated for 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours, and then counted using a microplate reader. The results showed that extract concentrations starting from 0.015 g/mL at an incubation period of 1 hour, concentrations starting from 0.125 g/mL at an incubation period of 6 hours, and concentrations starting from 0.0625 g/mL at an incubation period of 24 hours were proven to inhibit bacterial growth and proved to be more effective than 0.2% chlorhexidine with significantly different results (p0.05). It can be concluded that Rosella extract can inhibit the growth of multispecies bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Elderly’s population continues to rise globally, including Indonesia. Based on Government Regulation of Republic of Indonesia Number 43/2004, elderly is stated as someone whose age is above 60 years. Elderly population has experienced a decline in health because their body functions decreased due to increase of age. Aging process can cause a decrease in organ function as well as various physical changes, including changes in the oral cavity. Elderly can increase physical activity to make them fit and healthy. Dental problems that often occur in Indonesia on elderly are caries with 96.8% in the age range from 55-64 years, and 95.0% in ages >65 years. Problems with periodontitis at the age of 55-64 years with 75.9% and ages > 65 years with 66.0%. If this is not treated, it can lead to tooth loss which will interfere the function and activities of the oral cavity and have an impact on the quality of life. In Indonesia, herbs have been widely used for maintenance and health care which are indicated to be useful for treatment including dental issues, which is lemongrass and betel leaf. This community service has the goal to educate, train the elderly to maintain dental and general health by doing physical activities together to maintain and improve their health status. Implementation method is carried out by conducting survey, data collection and offline socialization. After the activities were carried out, the elderly understood how to maintain oral health using herbs and body’s health.

Abstract

Background: The health problem complained by Indonesian people is periondontitis caused by biofilm. A.actinomycetemcomitans biofilm showed higher resistance to antibiotic than planktonic cells, so research was developed on the use of an effective and safe natural ingredient, namely the siwak plant (Salvadora persica). Aim: To determine the effectiveness of siwak (Salvadora persica) extract on A.actinomycetemcomitans biofilm density. Methods: This research is a laboratory experimental study using the biofilm test method. Siwak extract were taken from Balitro in Bogor, West Java. This research was conducted at the FKG Usakti MiCore Laboratory. The siwak (Salvadora persica) extract was diluted to obtain concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.12% and 1.5%. Results: The normality test results using the Shapiro-Wilk method at the incubation period of 1 hour, 3 hours and 24 hours showed that the data were normally distributed (p>0.05). The results of the one-way ANOVA test for the three incubation periods showed significantly different data (p<0.05) with a p=0.000. The results of the LSD Post-Hoc test showed differences in significance at each concentration at each incubation period. Conclusion: There is an effect of siwak extract (Salvadora persica) with the highest inhibition on A.actinomycetemcomitans biofilm density at a concentration of 25%.

Abstract

Oral cancer is one of the malignancies whose numbers continue to increase every year throughout the world including Indonesia.  Oral cancer can be caused by multiple factors that are still unknown to many Indonesians. The WKRI Bekasi organization in collaboration with Pos Binaan Terpadu (PosBindu) Harapan Jaya has monitoring activities and early detection of risk factors for non-communicable diseases (including cancer) is a potential partner to become a cadre of education on how early detection, factors that trigger oral cancer and the role of oral hygiene in its prevention in the local community. The method chosen was counseling about oral cancer and training on how to carry out early detection in Posbindu elderly cadres. The aim is to increase the knowledge and ability of cadres to recognize abnormalities that have the potential to become oral cancer and be able to maintain oral health to prevent oral disease. The results of community service activities on cadres showed an increase in knowledge by 25 points (65%) and there was a significant difference between the level of knowledge of participants before and after training (p=0.000). In addition, cadres can demonstrate mouth-self-assessment very well and correctly under the direction of the educator team.  By training on oral cancer and how to perform oral self-examination on elderly cadres Posbindu Harapan Bekasi provides an opportunity for the community to be more aware of the development of oral cancer.
