Abstract

This study aims to explore attractions in four destinations: Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The paper sought to answer the following research questions about whether attractions play a different role in attracting travellers or merely satisfying needs. A qualitative research methodology was used to compare different perspectives from four market sources from each destination using the Travel Career Pattern (TCP) theory and tourism product taxonomy. The approach taken in this study is as follows: an exploratory investigation of the existing framework using secondary data from four tourism destinations and market source reports, global tourism statistical reporting data, national tourism organization statistics, consumer trends, travel behaviour, inbound activities, and marketing strategies. The current study found that four existing destinations have their own attractiveness and excellence in pleasure products, human effort, personal search, nature, and business. These results are consistent with previous observational studies in which the role of specific attractions as goal awareness (markers) and motivation (core) is crucial. Each target has its own uniqueness and different roles for different market sources. The generalizability of these results is subject to certain limitations. For example, four destinations and four market sources limit these results. It is recommended that further research be conducted in the following areas to explore more destinations and market sources or, in another case, with the primary data collection for the travellers visiting the destination.

Situated at the foot of Mount Slamet, the village features Curug Kali Mremang, visible from the Central Java national pantura road, and other small waterfalls, sunrise viewpoints, and abundant spice crops thriving in the cool climate. Developing these attractions into ecotourism destinations can yield economic, social, and environmental conservation benefits. Using qualitative research methods, data were collected through tourist interviews and literature studies. Findings indicate that Krajan Village has significant natural and cultural tourism potential. The SWOT analysis suggests that Curug Kali Mremang's ecotourism development can be achieved through active village government collaboration to improve access, road infrastructure, signage, and develop amenities like parking and stalls. The site can offer educational tourism and unique attractions such as nature exploration, sunrise watching, and forest healing activities. Conservation efforts should include regulations to maintain ecological balance and prevent landslides. The traditional sedekah bumi (earth alms) festival can attract tourists and promote cultural participation. Leveraging the village's spice crops can create new income sources, boosting local businesses. Additionally, effective promotion and collaboration with conservationists and tourism operators can help Krajan Village reach a broader and more diverse audience, ensuring sustainable ecotourism development.

Abstract

This research explores the potential of gastronomic tourism in the Lake Toba region of Indonesia, focusing on the unique culinary identity and traditions of the Batak tribe. Batak culinary practices are firmly rooted in local traditions and environmental conditions, with major traditional foods and drinks such as Tuak, Na Niura, and Mie Gomak having strong cultural values.  Currently, Lake Toba gastronomic tourism has not become a leading tourism destination.  The purpose of this study is to examine how environmental and cultural factors affect local cuisine and beverages in the Lake Toba region and to identify challenges and opportunities in promoting these gastronomic assets effectively.  This qualitative research uses interviews, observations, and documentation to collect data. Key stakeholders, including local business owners and Batak cultural experts were interviewed using non-probability snowball sampling to gain comprehensive insights into the region's culinary identity.  The results of the study highlight the cultural significance and potential tourist attraction of traditional Batak food and beverages. However, challenges such as tourists' lack of knowledge about local cuisine were identified. The study shows that a more structured and strategic approach, including annual food festivals and culinary tours, is needed to increase the demand for Lake Toba's Gatronomi tourism.  This study underscores the need for an annual Lake Toba Gastronomy festival to utilize local culinary heritage, thereby increasing cultural preservation and tourism development in the Lake Toba region.
