Abstract

This research investigates how human capital, professional development, institutional conditions, lecturer performance, and perceived educational quality are connected in private higher education institutions in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The study applied an explanatory quantitative approach and used questionnaire responses from 247 lecturers. The proposed direct and mediating relationships were examined with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Several limitations should be acknowledged, particularly the cross-sectional nature of the design and the use of lecturer self-reports to assess educational quality, both of which may create common-method bias. The findings are also tied to the setting of private universities in North Sumatra, so their applicability to other institutional contexts should be interpreted carefully. The analysis demonstrates that human capital, professional development, and institutional factors contribute significantly to lecturer performance, with human capital producing the largest effect. Lecturer performance is strongly associated with perceived educational quality (beta = 0.76). The mediation test further shows that lecturer performance partially explains the pathway from human capital to perceived educational quality. Overall, the study offers localized empirical evidence on the role of lecturer performance as an important channel through which lecturer competencies and institutional support are linked to quality perceptions in private higher education.

Abstract

Purpose – This research investigates the relationship between training, organizational support, and public employee performance in village governance in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Guided by human capital theory and perceived organizational support theory, this research conceptualizes training as a means of enhancing employee competence, while organizational support serves as a facilitating condition that enables employees to carry out their responsibilities more effectively. Design/methodology/approach – This research adopted a quantitative explanatory approach. Primary data were obtained from 100 village government employees working in selected offices across North Sumatra through a structured questionnaire and purposive sampling. The data were examined using descriptive statistics, validity and reliability assessments, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression. The construct scores were developed from Likert-scale questionnaire items measuring training, organizational support, and public employee performance. Findings/Results – The findings reveal that training has a positive and statistically significant association with public employee performance, with a regression coefficient of 0.386. Organizational support likewise demonstrates a positive and significant association with employee performance, with a coefficient of 0.337. The overall regression model is statistically significant, as shown by an F-statistic of 63.765 and an R² value of 0.568. Thus, training and organizational support collectively account for 56.8% of the variation in public employee performance. Originality/Value – This research contributes to the public-sector human resource management literature by investigating training and organizational support as complementary factors linked to employee performance within village government. Its originality lies in its focus on village-level public employees in North Sumatra, a local governance context that remains underexplored. The results indicate that village employee performance is related both to competency enhancement through training and to organizational factors, including leadership direction, sufficient resources, supervision, recognition, and professional development opportunities.

Abstract

In today’s competitive job market, the ability to compose a professional English application letter is essential for university graduates, especially in non-native English-speaking contexts. This study explores the implementation and outcomes of a socialization program designed to enhance the English correspondence skills of sixth-semester Management students at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Sultan Agung, Pematangsiantar, Indonesia. A total of 75–80 students were divided into three groups (Group A, Group B, and Group C) and participated in a series of interactive workshops focused on the structure, language, and personalization of English application letters. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observations, document analysis of student letters, reflection essays, and post-program questionnaires. The results revealed significant improvements in students’ understanding of letter format, grammar usage, and the ability to tailor content to specific job advertisements. Peer review and collaborative learning played a crucial role in increasing student engagement and confidence in using English professionally. The discussion highlights the importance of genre-based instruction and social learning in developing employability-oriented communication skills. The findings emphasize the need for higher education institutions to embed practical, job-focused English training into their curriculum to better prepare students for real-world career demands. This study concludes that structured socialization programs can effectively equip students with the skills and confidence needed to construct impactful application letters, thereby enhancing their readiness for the job market. With the right support, students can take ownership of their career development, starting with how they present themselves on paper.
