Abstract

Abstract

Adolescent stress was identified as a contributing factor that could influence healthy lifestyle behaviors, thereby increasing the risk of metabolic diseases. Adaptive stress management was considered an important strategy for preventing these conditions. This community service program aimed to improve adolescents’ knowledge and skills in adaptive stress management and to screen stress levels and metabolic disease risk. The program employed health education and demonstration methods, along with stress level screening using the validated and reliable Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) questionnaire (CFI = 0.950; RMR = 0.085; RMSEA = 0.072; Cronbach’s alpha = 0.862). Metabolic disease risk was assessed using a questionnaire developed by the authors based on risk factor indicators, including family history, dietary patterns, physical activity, lifestyle, family environment, and physical signs and symptoms associated with obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and other metabolic disorders. Validity testing indicated that all items were valid (Corrected Item–Total Correlation > 0.30) with good reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.761). The program was conducted on January 9, 2026, involving 30 twelfth-grade students at SMK Informatika Tulangan, Sidoarjo Regency. The results demonstrated that adolescents showed improved knowledge and skills regarding the educational materials, as reflected in their ability to answer questions and perform demonstrations correctly. Most participants experienced moderate stress levels (23 students; 76.67%) and moderate risk of metabolic disease (22 students; 73.33%). These findings highlight the importance of regular health education and screening programs in schools to support adolescents’ physical and mental health.

Abstract

Introduction: The risk of metabolic disease among adolescents has become a public concern, influenced by various behavioral and psychological factors. Objective: This study aims to identify the determinants of metabolic risk among adolescents, focusing on stress, dietary pattern, and physical activity. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 adolescents in one of the high schools in Sidoarjo. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression. Results: The results showed that several factors were significantly associated with metabolic risk in the bivariate analysis, namely stress level, diet, physical activity, lifestyle and gender (p < 0.05). However, in the multivariable model, only stress and physical activity remained significant predictors. Adolescents with low physical activity had a significantly higher risk of developing metabolic disease (p = 0.005), while higher stress levels were also associated with an increased risk of developing metabolic disease (p = 0.007). Dietary patterns were not significantly associated after adjustment (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Stress and physical activity are key determinants of metabolic risk among adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Nomophobia is an increasingly common psychosocial problem among teenagers, affecting mental health and daily physical activity. Therefore, educational and screening efforts are needed to increase awareness and early detection of nomophobia in teenagers. Objective: This community service aims to increase teenagers’ knowledge of smartphone use and to conduct a screening for nomophobia levels. Method: Community service was carried out through outreach activities, including lectures and discussions about the dangers of nomophobia among teenagers. Following the educational session, nomophobia levels were screened using the Indonesian version of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q). The activity was held on May 17, 2025, with 107 participants from grades 10 and 11 at a Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School) in Sidoarjo. Results: The screening results showed that most teenagers were in the moderate nomophobia category (54.2%). There was an increase in teenagers’ knowledge of the dangers of nomophobia, as indicated by a higher average score (1.98 to 2.64), and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test showed a significant difference (p<0.001). Conclusion: This activity plays an effective role in supporting promotive and preventive efforts by integrating counselling and screening, and can serve as a basis for planning further interventions to support mental health and the healthy use of digital technology among teenagers.
