Abstract

Penelitian ini menyelidiki efektivitas penggunaan podcast untuk meningkatkan keterampilan ini di kalangan siswa kelas tujuh di SMP Xaverius Maria. Penelitian ini melibatkan 62 siswa yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol yang masing-masing terdiri dari 31 siswa. Kelompok eksperimen menerima pengajaran berbasis podcast, sedangkan kelompok kontrol mengikuti kurikulum standar. Analisis data meliputi skor rata-rata, penghitungan n-gain, dan uji reliabilitas antar penilai, menggunakan SPSS. Hasil Penelitian Rerata skor post-test untuk pemahaman mendengarkan pada kelompok eksperimen adalah 81,58, dibandingkan dengan rata-rata pre-test sebesar 66,61, mencerminkan perbedaan rata-rata sebesar 14,97. Nilai t sebesar -10,25 (p < 0,001) menunjukkan peningkatan keterampil an mendengarkan yang signifikan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa podcast adalah alat yang efektif untuk pembelajaran bahasa, menawarkan pengalaman mendengarkan yang menarik dan otentik yang meningkatkan pengembangan keterampilan secara keseluruhan. Peningkatan signifikan pada kinerja kelompok eksperimen menggaris bawahi potensi pengintegrasian podcast ke dalam pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Podcast dapat secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan mendengarkan dan berbicara dalam pendidikan bahasa.

Abstract

Paraphrasing is an important technique in academic writing to avoid plagiarism,understanding the material and convey information in your own language. This research examines the paraphrasing methods employed by English study program students at Indo Global Mandiri University in Palembang using qualitative research, specifically thematic analysis, and data collection techniques including tests and interviews. The study involved 8 out of 16 eighth-semester students. For the test, the participants paraphrased a descriptive text provided by the researcher, and the interview comprised 8 questions related to paraphrasing. The findings revealed that most techniques used by students were changing vocabulary and the obstacles when paraphrasing texts were lack of vocabulary and poor/lack of documentation skills. Moreover, the research found that the conditions for students to use paraphrasing were to avoid plagiarism, avoid direct quotations in writing, increase the clarity of writing, and complete writing assignments during class.

Abstract

Reading is very prominent to obtain information and influence the learning success. Based on survey results from the last five years, Indonesia has a low level of reading interest. Therefore, the aims of this study were to find out the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model in reading comprehension achievement for seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 22 Palembang and the experimental group students’ perception of the use Quantum Thinker Teaching Model. This study used quasi experimental design with the sample were class of VII.2 and VII.6 that consisted of 33 students in each class, and divided into the experimental and control groups. Therefore, the data were collected by using pre-test, and post-test, that analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test with help of SPSS version 27 program. Based on the results of this study, (1) there was significant improvement on students’ reading level category, (2) there was significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension achievement, (3) there was significant improvement in students’ reading aspects, (4) and there was significant mean difference between experimental and control groups. (5) Moreover, the experimental students gave positive perception toward the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model in teaching process. In conclusion, the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model was improved students’ reading comprehension achievement for seventh grade students.

Abstract

Abstract –Current investigation was intended to see the feedback of EFL learners on the application of short movies in English speaking classroom. Experimental research design was consciously chosen which primarily concerned on descriptive statistical analysis. Fourteen sample was taken purposefully. To measure the EFL learners’ feedback, distribution of questionnaire items set was utilized. Twenty one items were designed to seek the aspects of psychological, linguistics, and literature. The findings revealed that positive feedback were made by the participants viewed from psychological viewpoint (English learning preference, motivation, enthusiasm, and bravery). In addition, positive feedback were also earned by majority of the EFL learners on their English speaking aspects seen from linguistics viewpoint (pronunciation, vocabulary, content, grammar, and fluency), excluding intonation. Besides, positive feedback were possessed by some other EFL learners concerned on literature viewpoint (generating moral lesson, understanding sequence of movie events, speaking and writing, as well as analyzing movie event), excluding story plot. Some following parties limited to English lecturers, EFL students, stakeholders, and other researchers were offered several pedagogical implication.

Abstract

This study was designed to know the significant improvement after using busuu application for listening comprehension achievement. It aimed at finding out how applying busuu application could be used to see significant improvement and significant mean difference between the students use busuu application and who did not use busuu application in first graders listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 3 Palembang. This research consisted of two variables, i.e. independent variable (busuu application) and dependent variable (listening comprehension achievement). The research was quantitative method quasi-experimental design. In this study, researcher used especially experimental group and control group. The sample of this research could be 66 students at first graders of SMPN 3 Palembang. After calculating data, the researcher concluded that students' listening can be improve both before and after using the busuu application. The mean results of the pupils' pre-test and post-tests serve as evidence for this. The result showed that there was significant mean difference on students’ listening comprehension because the t-obtained was higher than t-table = (3,966 > 1,997) with sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05 = .000 < 0.05. Which means that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. Moreover, the listening comprehension was significantly improved in the experimental group. The researcher concluded that there was any significant improvement and significant mean difference in the students listening comprehension achievement at SMPN 03 Palembang after being taught using busuu application.

Abstract

In order to develop the listening skill, there are many kinds of media that can be used, including CD, tape record, audio, video, etc. However, the researcher chose audio as a media in teaching and learning. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to find out if there was a significant improvement on students’ listening comprehension achievement after being taught by using audio. The other one was that if there was a significant mean difference between the students who were taught by using audio and those who were not. The research method was a quantitative. Furthermore, the researcher employed an experimental study. As a design, the researcher employed a quasi-experimental study. The population of this research were all of the second year of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang students. Therefore, the researcher took VIII.3 class (experimental) and VIII.7 class (control) for being the sample. The researcher employed a fill in the blank test, true false, multiple choices, matching the answer, order, and matching the phrases as the primary instrument to collect data. The researcher used the Paired and Independent Sample T-Test formula to calculate the data. With regard to the effect of using audio as an alternative method in improving students’ listening comprehension achievement, the result of Paired Sample T-test reveals that using audio as an alternative method has a positive effect. According to the outcomes of the independent sample t-test, there was a significant difference between the post-test scores of control and experimental class. It can be concluded that audio gave positive effect on the students’ listening comprehension achievement of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang.

Abstract

In today's era, all learning processes use modern methods. Learning media could be easily found by utilizing the digital era like today. One of them is the Hello English application that can be used as learning media for students. Many students felt bored learning grammar, especially using books. Therefore, the research aimed to determine the grammar understanding using the Hello English application. This research used a pre-experimental method. The population in this study were eighth-grade students at SMP Tri Dharma Palembang. The 25 out of 51 students were selected as the sample. This research used a paired sample t-test, and validity, and reliability results were calculated with a Likert scale and Cronbach alpha. Before analyzing the data, the normality test was conducted. The results of the paired sample t-test in the experimental group showed that the pre-test and post-test of the experimental group obtained a t-value of 10.719 and a p of 0.01 (p < 0.05). This proves that there was any significant enhancement in understanding grammar using the Hello English application. The findings show that teaching grammar using the Hello English application enhanced students' understanding of the grammar of the simple present tense for eighth-grade students of SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year 2024/2025.I

Abstract

The objective of this research was to get empirical evidence of the improving the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement through KWL (Know-Want-Learn) Strategy of narrative text. The population was the tenth grade students at SMK Negeri 2 Palembang. There were 806 students and 60 students were taken as the sample purposively. They were divided into 2 groups. Namely, experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the test were used (pretest and posttest). The writer used paired sample t-test (pretest- posttest) and independent sample t-test. In conclusion, there was improving using Know-Want-Learn strategy reading comprehension of narrative text, it could be seen from the results of pretest experimental group was 50.73 and the results of the posttest increased to be 78.60. The mean of score pretest and posttest experimental was 13.267. The results of pretest in control group was 48.07. The results posttest increased to be 61.53. The mean of score pretest and posttest control was 6.867. And also there was significant mean difference between the students showed that pretest and posttest experimental group was 78.60 and pretest-posttest control group was 61.53.

Abstract

Having problem of reaching the tested aspects of TOEFL particularly on achieving target score of TOEFL set, participants needed to be provided an intervention with TOEFL preparation class before encountering the test. For that reason, this community service activity highlighted the impact of TOEFL preparation class on the non EFL learners’ achievement. One class was used as the sample of this activity in which it consisted of twenty students coming from different major in one of private universities in Palembang, southern region of sumatera. Descriptive analysis with experimental design was used. A test was administered to see whether or not there was a significant improvement on the non EFL learners’ TOEFL-like score achievement. The results revealed that achievement level of the participants were in the elementary and intermediate category. Besides, statistically there was a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ TOEFL-like score intervened by the provision of TOEFL preparation class. Thus, it could be further concluded that TOEFL preparation class was impactful on the non EFL undergaduates’ English achievement. Keywords: TOEFL preparation class; Non EFL Classroom; Non EFL learners’                  achievement

Abstract

Majority of Indonesian EFL young learners struggle with mastering English vocabulary. This community service activity was about to see whether or not incorporating thematic pictures could enrich young learners’ English vocabulary. It used quantitative approach with descriptive analysis. Conveniently, one class was taken as the sample of this current activity which consisted of fourteen participants coming from different grades of elementary school. A Dictation test was administered as pretest and posttest before and after intervention to portray the young learners’ achievement level. The result showed that using thematic pictures was significantly impactful in enriching young learners’ English vocabulary mastery (.00 < .05). Ultimately, some pedagogical implication were also addressed accordingly in this present activity to young learners, future facilitators as well as researchers. Keywords: thematic pictures; vocabulary mastery; young learners.  Abstrak: Mayoritas pembelajar muda di Indonesia memiliki masalah dengan penguasaan kosakata Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk melihat apakah penggunaan gambar tematik dapat memperkaya kosa kata bahasa Inggris pelajar muda atau tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan analisis deskriptif. Mudahnya, satu kelas diambil sebagai sampel kegiatan kali ini yang terdiri dari empat belas peserta yang berasal dari berbagai tingkatan sekolah dasar. Tes Dikte diberikan sebagai pretest dan posttest sebelum dan sesudah intervensi untuk menggambarkan tingkat prestasi pelajar muda. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan gambar tematik memberikan dampak yang signifikan dalam memperkaya penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris pelajar muda. Pada akhirnya, beberapa implikasi pedagogis juga dibahas dalam kegiatan ini kepada pelajar muda, fasilitator masa depan, serta peneliti. Kata kunci: gambar tematik; pembelajar muda; penguasaan kosakata
