Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for memory impairment. Administration of herbal medicine which is rich in polyphenol has been believed have a positive impact on memory performance. Recent studies showed one of the potential candidates of herbal medicine is Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (HSL) which can improve memory function in several conditions. However, researches which prove will HSL affect memory function in DM is still limited. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of HSL administrating on spatial working memory in DM. This study is an experimental study using DDY mice aged 9-11 weeks which were divided into four groups: control (K), DM control (DM), DM with HSL at a dose of 200 mg/kgBW (DM-HSL200), and DM with HSL at a dose of 400 mg/kgBW (DM-HSL400). Experimental animals were given treatment for 28 days. All groups performed Y- Maze spontaneous alternation before and after treatment. The results of this study showed a decrease in memory function in the DM group. Administration of HSL can maintain memory function in DM mice. These findings indicate that administration of HSL has potency to prevent memory impairment in DM. Keywords : Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn., spatial working memory, diabetes mellitus, Y-maze spontaneous alternation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This community service initiative was designed to enhance balance among the elderly by leveraging digital technology at Posyandu Lansia RW 06, Rangkapan Jaya Baru, Depok City. The underlying issue was that Indonesia's increasing life expectancy was not accompanied by healthier lifestyle habits, leading to a higher risk of falls. Poor balance among the elderly elevated the likelihood of falls, which could adversely affect their independence and quality of life. The research methodology involved conducting Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to identify primary concerns, educating participants on the importance of balance, and providing balance exercise training through digital instructional videos. Evaluations were performed using pre-test and post-test assessments. The results indicated a significant improvement in the participants' knowledge. In conclusion, despite challenges like limited access to technology, the program successfully achieved its objectives and showed potential for further development and implementation in other locations. This initiative provided tangible benefits to the elderly, boosting their confidence in daily activities, reducing the risk of falls, and thereby enhancing their overall quality of life. Keywords: Elderly, Balance, Exercise, Technology

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Edukasi Kesehatan, Lansia, Pelatihan Akuatik, Hidroterapi Abstract The elderly population in Indonesia which continues to grow and now accounts for nearly 10% of the total population, requires special attention to their physical and mental health. Safe physical activities, such as aquatic training, are effective in improving the fitness of the elderly. This training can reduce joint stress, improve balance, and strengthen muscles. In a community service program by the Faculty of Health Sciences UPNVJ in collaboration with the Paguyuban Warga Lanjut Usia (WULAN) Indonesia, 62 elderly participants attended a seminar on the benefits of aquatic training. The average pre-test score was 6.37, while the average post-test score was 9.10, showing an improvement of 2.73 or 42.8%. It is hoped that this training will motivate the elderly to engage in regular aquatic activities, which are safer and more enjoyable. Abstract

Background: The pervasive use of digital devices, coupled with irregular sleep and low physical activity, poses potential risks to cognitive outcomes in university students. Physiotherapy students, whose education demands both mental and physical engagement, may be particularly vulnerable. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the integrated effects of smartphone use, physical activity, and sleep quality on cognitive outcomes among undergraduate physiotherapy students. Methods: A cross-sectional design was applied involving 100 first- and second-year physiotherapy students at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta. Data were collected through validated self-administered questionnaires, including the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and a Likert-based assessment of smartphonerelated lifestyle impact. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses were performed using SPSS version 26.0. Results: The findings showed a significant relationship between excessive digital device use and increased cognitive failures. Poor sleep quality was also associated with greater cognitive lapses, while higher physical activity levels correlated positively with better cognitive performance. Regression analysis indicated that the three lifestyle variables jointly explained a substantial proportion of the variance in cognitive outcomes. Conclusion: Digital habits, sleep patterns, and physical activity levels interactively influence cognitive outcomes in physiotherapy students. Interventions promoting digital hygiene, adequate sleep, and physical activity may enhance cognitive resilience and academic performance in this population.
