Abstract

Language acquisition is a dynamic process, especially during the formative years of childhood. This research delves into the depths of psycholinguistics to explore the effectiveness of using cartoons as a dynamic tool in enhancing lexical enrichment in the development of English vocabulary. The study aims to ascertain the influence of cartoons on the development of students' English vocabulary using psycholinguistic theory. This research adopts a qualitative approach. The data for this study pertain to the development of students' English vocabulary, with cartoons serving as the primary source of data. Data were collected through participant observation, with the researcher observing students' language acquisition and lexical mastery in the classroom. Additionally, interviews were conducted with students and English language teachers regarding the enhancement of students' English vocabulary acquisition, employing the recording technique. Once the data were collected, the researcher transcribed the speech data into written form, documenting the vocabulary acquired by students after watching cartoons. Subsequently, the data underwent reduction, classification, and analysis. The results of this study indicate several influences of cartoons on the development of students' language skills, including enhanced understanding of the English language, acquisition of new vocabulary, improved listening skills, introduction to culture and context, enjoyable learning experiences, comprehension of expressions and emotions, and the cultivation of speaking skills. Consequently, cartoons can be considered valuable learning aids, although it is advisable to use them in conjunction with more structured learning methods, such as English courses, textbooks, or tutors, to achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

In the context of parenting, the choice of language by parents becomes a critical tool for conveying values, rules, and emotional support to children. This study investigates parental communication preferences for using Indonesian versus Madurese in rural communities and their impact on child-rearing practices. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The method employed is the observation and participation technique, where the researcher observes and records the speech of rural communities related to parenting communication in Indonesian through recording and note-taking techniques. Besides, the researcher uses reflective introspective methods, based on the experiences of both the researcher and the informants. The researcher also conducts interviews with community leaders, linguists, artists, cultural figures, and rural community members. Once the data is collected, the researcher performs data reduction, classification, and validation according to the data type. Subsequently, data tabulation is carried out by coding each data entry listed in tables, followed by data interpretation and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate a tendency among educated generations to raise their children using the Indonesian language, which is viewed negatively by Generation X. It is because the use of the Madurese language is considered an essential strategy in instilling moral values in children, especially in interactions with older individuals. The use of Indonesian is perceived as potentially distancing children from their cultural roots. Moreover, this study also finds that parental preferences for using the Indonesian language in parenting communication within rural communities encompass elements of nationalism, the role of Indonesian in rural societies, and Indonesian language communication in parenting in rural settings.

Abstract

Arabic language (AL) proficiency is a crucial element in understanding classical Islamic texts, or Kitab Kuning (KK), and plays a central role in the curriculum of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). However, students often face difficulties mastering Arabic due to its complex grammar and vocabulary. This study aims to identify the challenges faced in mastering Arabic and the relationship between Arabic proficiency and the ability to read KK among students, particularly in Pesantren in Tapal Kuda region. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from members of pesantren families in Tapal Kuda region, including Kyai, Nyai, Ning, Lora, pesantren administrators, as well as teachers (Ustadz and Ustadzah) and students. Data collection was carried out through observation and conversation methods with recording and note-taking techniques, as well as reflective introspective methods. Interviews were conducted to explore factors influencing Arabic proficiency and its impact on the ability to read KK. The collected data were analyzed through reduction, classification, verification, tabulation, and interpretation. The study's findings indicate that: 1) Arabic serves as an academic identity of pesantren; 2) Arabic is a central medium in KK; 3) Issues related to Arabic proficiency in the context of KK. Besides, the research findings include several factors and recommendations, namely; 1) factors impeding Arabic mastery include limited access to adequate educational resources, ineffective teaching methods, and variations in students' educational backgrounds; and 2) the findings suggest that the ability to read KK is significantly affected by the level of Arabic proficiency, particularly in aspects of grammar and vocabulary understanding. This study is expected to contribute to the development of more effective Arabic teaching strategies in pesantren and improve students' abilities to read and comprehend KK.
