Abstract

ABSTRACT The well-being of tobacco farmers in Indonesia tends to be low due to several influencing factors, including low income, dependence on the cigarette industry, low educational levels, and limited access to technology and information. To enhance their welfare, there is a need to focus on increasing income, improving access to technology, information, and education. The rainy season poses challenges for tobacco farmers as it can cause damage to crops and affect the quality of tobacco. Farmers can explore alternative sources of income by beekeeping. Beekeeping provides additional income, environmental protection, and enhances the quality of agricultural products through pollination. Probolinggo Regency has significant potential for beekeeping due to the availability of food sources, favorable climate, diverse agricultural practices, and community interest. With this potential, farmers in Probolinggo Regency can earn additional income and maintain soil fertility. The key to the success of this program lies in community development approaches and community participation in decision-making. Training and mentoring in honey bee cultivation improve participants' knowledge and skills while ensuring sustainable implementation. Environmental protection programs involving planting flowering plants for honey bees offer dual benefits by providing food and conserving the environment. Introducing honey bee ecotourism is a way to combine sustainable cultivation with nature-based tourism, enhancing conservation awareness. Therefore, empowering communities through beekeeping has many benefits, including improving welfare, environmental protection, developing the honey industry, and increasing national revenue. Moreover, this initiative also opens opportunities for sustainable ecotourism, serving as a source of local revenue and strengthening the country's economy. Abstract

Greenhouse technology presents a promising solution to the challenges of agricultural productivity and sustainability, particularly for small-scale farmers facing climate change, resource constraints, and unpredictable weather conditions. This study was the first attempt to investigate the impact of greenhouse adoption on farmers’ welfare which focused on household income per capita and food security status. The samples of this study were conducted 201 melon farmers in East Java, Indonesia. This study analyzed data to discern the effects of greenhouse adoption on farmers’ welfare by employing endogenous switching regression to address potential endogeneity issues. The analysis revealed that greenhouse adoption significantly and positively affected household income per capita and food security status. Through rigorous data analysis, this research had contributed valuable insights into the socio-economic implications of adopting greenhouses in agricultural practices. The results highlighted the role of greenhouses in boosting farmers’ resilience, improving livelihoods, and enhancing food security, providing a strong case for promoting greenhouse technology in rural agricultural practices.

Abstract

Contract Farming is considered to be able to increase farmers' yields and income. In addition, another factor that influences is socio-demographic factors, so this research contributes as a reference in coffee farmers' decision-making in choosing adaptation strategies. This research also supports the long-term sustainability of farming to address climate change by supporting the thirteenth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to climate change mitigation by increasing effective planning and management capacities related to climate change, especially in the agricultural sector in Indonesia. This research was conducted in August 2022 in Pasuruan and Malang, East Java Province. Respondents were determined by Multistage Random Sample Procedure with a total of 100 coffee farmers. From the interview data of 100 coffee farmers in East Java, it was found that the majority of farmers had an understanding of climate change from three indicators: changes in rainfall, temperature, and length of the rainy season. The analysis results showed that Contract Farming influenced farmers' decision to adapt to climate change. In addition, socio-demographic factors that influenced the decision to adapt were the age of the farmer, but its effect was negative, meaning that the younger the age of the farmer, the higher the chance of implementing adaptation strategies. The findings indicate that both Contract Farming and socio-demographic factors are crucial in shaping the adaptation strategies of coffee farmers in response to climate change. This research highlights the importance of promoting Contract Farming as a means to enhance farmers' resilience to climate impacts.
