Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the problems of pronouncing diphthongs and to reveal the factors causing the problems of pronouncing diphthongs at the First Year Students of English Department Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The researcher used Descriptive qualitative research in this researh. The researcher used document analysis and inteview as intruments in data collection. The researcher took 10 students from the second semester of English Department as sample in this research.The findings of this research showed that there were two problems faced by the students of pronouncing diphthongs, including the students monophthongized the diphthong sounds to pure vowel sounds and substituted one diphthong sounds with other diphthong sounds. Meanwhile, the factors that cause the students problems of pronouncing diphthong sounds are the influence of mother tongue, lack of knowledge in diphthong materials, lack of practice, difficult to memorize diphthong sounds, fossilization, and lack of motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to see the effectiveness of the hybrid problem-based learning approach in training of speaking English at SMAN 14 Makassar. The researcher used quantitative research with a pre-experimental where the data gained from speaking test and data was collected through pre-test, treatment and post-test. The population of the research was the member of OSIS SMAN 14 Makassar. The total of population were 28 students.The result showed that the improvement of students’ accuracy and fluency from 28 students. The mean score of accuracy in post-test showed (75,5) that is higher than pre-test (54,3), with percentage of improvement (39%). Besides, most of students got very good score (71-85). Furthermore, the t-test value (2.0) that is greater than t-table value (2.052). It was concluded that there was significant improvement in accuracy by implementing the hybrid problem-based learning. Then, the mean score of fluency in post-test showed (64,4) that is higher than pre-test (46,1), with percentage of improvement (39%). Besides, most of students got good score (56-70). While, the t-test analysis of fluency showed (1.8) that is greater than t-table (2.052). It was concluded that there was significant improvement in fluency by implementing the hybrid problem-based learning.Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the hybrid problem-based learning was effective to improve the students speaking skills approach in training of speaking English at SMAN 14 Makassar.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not the use of Outdoor-Based Learning Strategy can improve the students speaking skill in terms of fluency and accuracy. This research was conducted in SMP Unismuh Makassar by using the true experimental design through two groups of experimental class and controlled class, and collected the data by giving pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMP Unismuh Makassar. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique which consisted with 17 students as experimental class and 17 students as controlled class. The research findings showed that the first grade students of SMP Unismuh Makassar have a significant different between students’ post-test in experimental class and controlled in speaking fluency and accuracy. The mean score of post-test (2.41) in experimental class was higher than the mean score of post-test (1.94) in controlled class. While in Speaking accuracy the mean score of post-test (1.94) in experimental class as higher than the mean score post-test (1.65) in controlled class. From t-test the t-test value in speaking fluency is 4.315 > 0.05 and in speaking accuracy 3.395 > 0.05. which mean that there is significant difference between before and after giving the treatment. It indicated that the null hypothesis (HI) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It shows that the use of outdoor-based learning significantly improve the students’ speaking fluency and accuracy.
