Abstract

This study scrutinizes the role of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in enhancing English for Communication competence among undergraduate students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, specifically focusing on students in communication study programs in Indonesia. It examines students' attitudes, perspectives, and experiences with AI tools in improving English communication skills and aims to uncover AI integration's perceived benefits and challenges. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design collected data from thirty-one undergraduate students using a Likert-scale questionnaire followed by semi-structured interviews to provide more detailed insights. Findings from the descriptive statistical analysis indicate that most students expressed positive reactions to using AI tools to support their communication competence. Students responded with benefits such as personalized learning experiences, real-time feedback, and improved interpersonal communication, public speaking, and business-related communication. However, concerns were raised regarding AI's reliability, data privacy, potential over-reliance on AI, and limited enhancement of creativity and critical thinking skills. In English classrooms, where integrating technology in language learning is increasingly prioritized, these findings suggest that AI tools can be valuable resources for developing communication skills among ESP students. To maximize their benefits, educational institutions should establish clear guidelines, promote critical engagement with technology, and provide adequate instructor support to help students navigate AI-related challenges.

Abstract

This conceptual framework delves into the pivotal role of project-based learning integrated with information and communication technology in improving speaking and nurturing the 4Cs skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication in the English learning process. The paper highlights the significance of speaking skills in English proficiency and the challenges students encounter in developing communication and collaborative skills. It explores the potential of project-based learning with ICT to enhance students' speaking abilities and 4Cs skills. This study integrates various theories by conducting a thorough literature review on project-based learning, ICT, speaking, and the 4Cs skills. Utilizing reputable databases, the review encompasses electronic publications from 2016 to global studies conducted up to 2023. The limitations arise from database constraints and the omission of specific disciplines and focus in EFL classrooms. The conceptual framework addresses issues of motivation, fear, time constraints, and collaboration, resulting in an enriched learning environment where students not only improve their speaking skills but also develop essential 4C skills required for success in a rapidly changing global landscape. This study presents a conceptual framework that provides a comprehensive solution to the identified problems in improving students' speaking and 4C skills. The findings suggest that PjBL and ICT integration can be an effective learning model for developing speaking performance and the 4Cs skills, offering students opportunities to collaborate, communicate, and think critically and creatively.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of violations of politeness maxims and the factors influencing these violations in the movie Mencuri Raden Saleh. Using a qualitative approach, data collection techniques involved listening and noting, while data analysis employed the pragmatic pairing method refined with theoretical triangulation for validation. The research findings reveal: (1) 19 instances of violations of politeness maxims; (2) 15 instances of violations of the cooperation principle; and (3) internal and external factors influencing these violations. The study demonstrates that politeness violations play a critical role in supporting character development, building conflict, and creating tension in the storyline. Additionally, such violations are often strategically employed to achieve specific communication goals, both directly and indirectly. These findings offer valuable insights into the use of language in popular media as a reflection of social interaction and the nuanced dynamics of politeness in communication. Furthermore, this research contributes significantly to socio-pragmatic studies by highlighting the interplay between language use and cultural norms in media narratives, providing a foundation for future studies on the implications of politeness in language, cultural representation, and media discourse.

Abstract

Although the notion of establishing global education has existed since the early 21st Century, the majority of current EFL textbooks neglect global issues as teaching content. However, existing studies on the implementation of the current Emancipated Curriculum have yet to incorporate authentic materials related to these topics, which remain significantly underexplored. In such a manner, this study introduced a supplementary reading material integrated with zoonoses topic as a part of global health issues nowadays. Utilizing a mixed-method approach to accomplish an ADDIE model, the study presents clear DBR stages. Various instruments, such as questionnaires, interviews, tests, and digital artifacts, were used. Half of the student population was obtained as samples (N=63), and an English teacher participated in this study. The major findings underscore the significant difference in the experiment group students’ reading skills based on t-value (7.011) > α (0.05). To a certain extent, user responses (88%) and module evaluation (95%) toward the product were considered very worthy or eligible to be employed for teaching reading in English classrooms. Apart from the empirical evidence, the study offers practical insights for English teachers in similar areas, highlighting the potential of proposing global issue topics to bridge the students' knowledge, skills, and awareness of real-world situations. Shortly, this will contribute valuable direction for the future development of English teaching materials.Â
