Abstract

Abstract. The infodemic spread during the last pandemic situation, and each individual's perceived risk varies based on the dominance of his/her personality. This study, therefore, aims to examine the effect of the Big-Five Personality and social media on the perceived risk in the vulnerable group. The number of subjects was 267 respondents from adolescence to late adulthood, with inclusion criteria: (1) active users of social media, (2) over 19 years old, and (3) approved informed consent. The research consisted of two study stages: quantitative and qualitative. The instruments used in the quantitative stage were (1) the social media questionnaire, (2) the Big-Five Inventory (BFI) scale, and (3) the perceived risk scale, while the instrument employed in the qualitative stage was an interview guideline with an open questionnaire. Then, quantitative data analysis used regression techniques, whereas qualitative ones utilized content technique analysis. As a result, the Big-Five Personality and the types of social media simultaneously and significantly affected perceived risk (p0.05). According to the qualitative method results, the information topic "Covid-19 Data Case" became a popular theme (37.83%), and the majority of respondents considered Covid-19 "very risky" (35.33%). In conclusion, neuroticism, YouTube, and WhatsApp have a role in perceived risk in vulnerable groups. On the other hand, YouTube posed the highest perceived risk compared to other social media. In addition, although the intensity of social media use did not affect perceived risk, the content about "Covid-19 Case Data" gave rise to the perception that Covid-19 was "very risky."Keywords: big-five personality; infodemic; perceived risk; types of social media.

Abstract

The high use of social media among university students tends to have a negative impact on the individual's psychological condition. One of them is the fear of missing out (FOMO), which is a feeling of fear of being left behind in information and events that encourages the formation of negative feelings and behavior. Protective factors are needed so that the level of fear of missing out (FOMO) does not increase, and one of them is emotional intelligence. However, there has been no correlational study between emotional intelligence and fear of missing out (FOMO) in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and fear of missing out (FOMO) in university student social media users, with a quantitative correlational approach on study participants who are: (1) university students; (2) aged 18-24 years; and (3) using at least one social media. A total of 220 study participants were obtained by convenience sampling. Data collection was carried out using the Online Fear of Missing Out Inventory (ON-FOMO; 20 items; α = .792) and Alat Ukur Kecerdasan Emosional Tarumanagara (Tarumanagara Emotional Intelligence Measurement Inventory; 28 items; α = .893). The study data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment, and the results showed that there was a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and fear of missing out (FOMO; rxy = - .480 > rtable; p = .000 < .05), with the strength of the relationship in the Medium category. These results mean that the higher the emotional intelligence, the lower the level of fear of missing out (FOMO), and vice versa. In addition, the results of this study show that emotional intelligence influences fear of missing out (FOMO) by 23%, with the remaining 77% contribution influenced by other factors not discussed in this study.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents frequently experience substantial emotional changes, making them vulnerable to stress, particularly distress, which can lead to adverse effects such as fear, anxiety, and frustration due to incongruence between expectations and irrational beliefs. Consequently, addressing negative stress in adolescents requires the development of rational thinking and the ability to confront irrational beliefs effectively. Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of REBT interventions delivered through the "Kancani" web application in examining stress levels among junior high school students. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, involving 22 participants. The purposive sampling technique was employed to select participants. An intervention consisting of 9 sub-modules was provided over a period of 2 weeks. The measuring instrument used was the DASS-42 scale, especially those measuring the stress scale consisting of 14 items (α = .881). Findings: The results obtained were a decrease in the average stress level of participants, t(21) = 2.141, p = .044, Cohen’s d = 0.456. Implication: Web Application “Kancani” is effective for decreasing stress levels of junior high-school. Prompting students to use kancani regularly and teacher evaluate it.

Abstract

Semakin meningkatnya SDL, semakin rendah stres akademik siswa. Begitu sebaliknya. Untuk mengurangi stres akademik, siswa dapat meningkatkan SDL melalui penbentukan kebiasaan belajar baik, seperti menepati jadwal belajar, merinci dan mengevaluasi target secara realistis dan terukur.
