Abstract

Lightning has always been a dangerous threat to the equipment of electric power systems consisting of: power plants, substations, transmission lines and distribution lines. Generally, overhead high-voltage transmission lines are exposed to lightning strikes. Therefore, the degree of protection against lightning is determined based on the degree of insulation of the equipment. To prevent damage to equipment due to lightning strikes, arresters are used. In this study, three arrester models were used as comparisons, namely. IEEE arrester model. The system was simulated using Alternative Transients Program (ATP) software. The results showed that the lightning rod was declared successful in protecting the transmission system, where the three lightning rods had a Margin Protection (MP) of arresters that reached 28%. In the simulation, it is known that the IEEE arrester successfully cut off the lightning current in the transmission system so that the transient overvoltage recorded on the transformer does not exceed the Basic Insulation Level ((BIL) trafo.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of different circulation systems on water quality parameters in tilapia rearing. Good water quality is very important in tilapia rearing so that tilapia can grow healthily and optimally. In this study, three different circulation systems were compared, namely a circulation system without a pump, a circulation system with one pump, and a circulation system with two pumps to increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pond. The results of this study showed that CS III was able to maintain an efficient and stable DO concentration of around 7.5 to 8 ppm which also resulted in a stable pH value. Compared to CS I with a low DO concentration of about 3 ppm which impacted the pH value inefficiently. Also, CS II showed stable DO concentrations but decreased pH values. This shows that CS III can create more optimal environmental conditions for tilapia growth compared to other circulation systems. Furthermore, The consistent of DO concentration has an impact on other water quality parameters, namely pH, which is also consistent and stable, which is good for fish health.

Abstract

This study compared the growth of red and black tilapia in a shared pond. It examined environmental factors, including temperature, pH levels, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total dissolved solids (TDS). The study employed a solitary water pump system to monitor fish growth and water quality over 36 days. Although there was a decline in dissolved oxygen (DO) levels on day 18, red tilapia exhibited accelerated growth and higher survival rates, suggesting enhanced environmental adaption compared to black tilapia. The feeding parameters were of utmost importance, and Prima Feed (PF 1000) performed a critical role by offering the ideal levels of protein (39-41%), fat (5%), fiber (6%), ash (16%), and water content (10%). Water quality assessments indicated varying dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, which were affected by temperature fluctuations caused by unpredictable weather conditions. Although the TDS range of 0.5-1.0 ppm was deemed suitable for tilapia cultivation, the total water quality remained suboptimal throughout the investigation. However, the findings indicated that red tilapia exhibited a greater growth rate than black tilapia under identical pond conditions. This can be related to the red tilapia's improved capacity to withstand fluctuations in temperature and retain a higher level of physiological stability. This study offers significant findings regarding the disparities in the two tilapia species' behavior, growth, and survival. These findings can be used to enhance pond management and maintenance procedures to achieve better outcomes in aquaculture.

Abstract

As the tropical country, Indonesia has a sustainable solar energy for the farm products such as coffee. Indonesia’s coffee has been categorized as one of the biggest export products in the world and needs a development system to provide drying coffee beans with good quality. Therefore, this study comprehensively explains an experiment to develop a continuous solar air dryer with a hybrid system for drying coffee. The system has two different modes: off-sunny and sunshine hours. The heated air from the collector is driven into the drying chamber during the sunlight. The results show that the drying chamber's maximum temperature during daylight ranged from 40°C to 56°C and 9°C to 22°C warmer than the ideal environment temperature. Then, the coffee beans got the 12,7% moisture content in 107 hours in a solar dryer with solid dehumidification material. During off-sunlight, the air humidity reaches a 17% reduction and relatively consistent with air temperature. Furthermore, the benefit of this research can support the agricultural system without sunlight and apply a molecular sieve as a solar dehumidifier for the desiccant material in the drying chamber.

Abstract

Mechatronics, as an interdisciplinary field integrating mechanical, electrical, computer, and control engineering, provides innovative solutions for energy and environmental challenges in urban regions. This study conducts a systematic literature review and meta-analysis using open access datasets to evaluate solar energy potential, electricity reliability, and air quality in Medan, North Sumatra. Results show that the city has strong solar irradiance levels, averaging 5.75 kWh/m²/day, indicating substantial feasibility for photovoltaic deployment. Electricity reliability, assessed through SAIFI and SAIDI indicators, is more stable in Medan compared with other Indonesian cities, offering a favorable foundation for renewable integration. Air quality analysis reveals moderate conditions, with PM2.5 concentrations averaging 28 µg/m³, slightly above World Health Organization standards, yet lower than Jakarta and Pekanbaru. Across all dimensions, mechatronics applications, including smart grid automation, intelligent inverters, IoT-based environmental sensors, and robotics-assisted monitoring emerge as crucial tools to bridge research and implementation gaps. The study identifies limited adoption of techno-economic feasibility analysis, localized reliability assessments, and distributed sensor networks in Medan, which restricts practical deployment. Future research should emphasize mechatronic frameworks such as predictive control, cyber-physical systems, and stochastic modeling to improve resilience. Policy recommendations highlight the need for targeted incentives, pilot projects, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Overall, this work positions mechatronics as a key enabler for sustainable energy transition and environmental management in Medan, offering insights applicable to other rapidly urbanizing regions in Indonesia.
