Abstract

This study intends to examine how junior high school students see the use of the Lola Speak application to enhance their English speaking abilities. Students' subjective experiences were investigated using a qualitative approach and a case study methodology. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used to gather information from 24 first-graders at a Medan junior high school. Ten closed-ended statements that assessed the application's usefulness, simplicity of use, and effect on students' confidence in their ability to speak English made up the questionnaire. The majority of pupils gave the application positive feedback, according to the data. Up to 66.7% of students concurred that the application's speaking practice feature enhanced their ability to communicate, and 58.3% said that using it increased their confidence when speaking English. The application was also thought to be engaging, user-friendly, and capable of boosting motivation for learning. Some students, however, claimed that in order to better accommodate different learning styles, more features were required and that there were technical limitations. The study's findings emphasize how critical it is to create application-based learning tools that are more flexible and sensitive to user requirements.

Abstract

Artikel ini menyelidiki peran transformatif alat terjemahan mesin (MT) dalam pendidikan Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing (EFL), melampaui Google Terjemahan yang ada di mana-mana. Penelitian yang dilakukan di Medan, Indonesia, menyelidiki preferensi dan alasan di balik pilihan 40 mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris dan non-Bahasa Inggris. Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa Deepl Translator adalah pilihan dominan bagi 55% peserta, karena dinilai akurat, sederhana, dan fitur-fiturnya yang khusus. Kamus U, yang dipilih oleh 20%, menonjol karena dukungan bahasanya yang luas dan fitur-fiturnya yang serbaguna. Meskipun Google Terjemahan memegang pangsa 25%, para peserta menghargai integrasinya yang lancar dengan layanan Google lainnya dan cakupan bahasa yang luas. Peserta menekankan pentingnya ketepatan, kesederhanaan, dan terjemahan yang terdengar alami. Studi ini menganjurkan para pendidik untuk secara strategis mengintegrasikan alat MT ke dalam pengajaran, dengan mempertimbangkan beragam preferensi siswa. Selain itu, hal ini menyoroti perlunya penelitian di masa depan mengenai persepsi siswa dan peran pendidik dalam memandu penggunaan alat yang efektif, sehingga berkontribusi terhadap lanskap pendidikan bahasa yang terus berkembang.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada investigasi kesalahan pelafalan siswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris, dengan peserta yang memenuhi kriteria khusus, termasuk minimal tiga tahun belajar bahasa Inggris dan kemahiran tingkat menengah. Wawancara dilakukan dalam bahasa Inggris, yang bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan pengucapan, yang dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik. Temuan ini mengungkapkan kata-kata yang sering diucapkan salah dan kemudian dikoreksi oleh peneliti, yang kemudian diikuti oleh para siswa. Penelitian ini menyoroti tantangan yang dihadapi siswa dalam menguasai pelafalan bahasa Inggris dan menyoroti pentingnya mengatasi kesalahan-kesalahan ini dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Dengan menggunakan analisis tematik, penelitian ini memberikan wawasan yang berharga tentang sifat kesalahan pengucapan dan efektivitas strategi koreksi. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan pemahaman dan strategi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pelafalan di kalangan pelajar bahasa Inggris. Temuan ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya pendekatan pengajaran yang ditargetkan untuk mengatasi tantangan pelafalan dan menekankan peran pendidik dalam membimbing siswa untuk mencapai kemahiran pelafalan yang lebih baik.
