Abstract

Science education plays a crucial role in equipping students with essential knowledge about themselves and their environment. In the 21st-century educational era, emphasizing the development of critical thinking skills becomes essential, given the complex challenges faced by modern society. This study focuses on the application of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approach in science education to enhance the critical thinking abilities and scientific literacy of fourth-grade students at Anak Saleh Elementary School in Malang. Through a Classroom Action Research method conducted collaboratively with teachers, this research observes the effectiveness of the STEAM approach in creating a conducive learning environment for students to actively construct their knowledge through real activities. The research subjects included 28 students, comprising 11 boys and 17 girls. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and tests, both multiple-choice and descriptive, to produce qualitative and quantitative data. Initial results show a significant improvement in critical thinking and scientific literacy skills, with the percentage of students achieving the minimum mastery criteria (MMC) increasing from 71.42% in the first cycle to 89.28% in the second cycle. These findings affirm that the STEAM approach can be an effective strategy in enhancing students' critical thinking and scientific literacy skills while providing insights for the development of more innovative science education methods in the future.

Abstract

Physics problems tend to presented in one or some representation forms, such as verbal; visual; mathematic; graphic; etc. The consistency of representation using and concept understanding have strong relation, while learning style using by students gives big help to understand a concept too. The purpose of this research is to know relationship between representation pattern and VAK learning styles of physics’ undergraduate students in solving physics problems. Research has been done qualitatively in phenomenology type. Data was obtained from a quiz using 4 representation forms, interview, and questionnaire. The results of this research showed that representation pattern and learning styles using by students had well relation where most chose visual as the most preferred of both.

Abstract

Abstract

The implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in physics instruction is aligned with topics that have direct applications in daily life, such as electricity. One of the projects that students can undertake is constructing a simple household electrical installation. However, PjBL has a limitation in which students only focus on the final product of the project rather than the underlying concepts required to complete it. This condition leads to decreased student engagement during the learning process, which in turn may increase the probability of a decline in learning outcomes. This weakness can be addressed by integrating the Rally Table learning strategy. Therefore, this study aims to measure the effectiveness of PjBL combined with Rally Table in improving the learning outcomes of 12th-grade students on the topic of electricity. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design with a sample of 72 students. The findings indicate an improvement in learning outcomes by 37%. In addition, classroom observations revealed that proper time allocation between regular learning activities and project work is essential to foster active student engagement throughout the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to explore naturally occurring practices of positive reinforcement in the learning process of Mathematical Physics 2 and their impact on students' motivation and understanding. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews with the lecturer, and student questionnaires. The results show that the most frequently appearing forms of reinforcement included verbal praise, the awarding of additional points, and constructive feedback. Student responses indicate that these reinforcements had a positive effect on their enthusiasm for learning and classroom engagement. However, students also emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the distribution of reinforcement. This study provides an initial contribution to understanding naturally emerging reinforcement strategies and their relevance for further development as systematic instructional approaches in higher education.

Abstract

The low student learning outcomes in the Fundamentals of Physics II raise concerns about the quality of the evaluation instrument used to measure the students’ achievement.  This study aims to analyze the quality of the Final Semester Examination (UAS) instrument and its relation with students’ learning outcomes.  The subjects of this study were 53 second-semester students from the Department of Physics, Universitas Negeri Malang.  The evaluation instruments consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions.  The items were analyzed using PSPP statistical software, which functions similarly to SPSS.   The analysis involved validity testing using the Pearson Correlation Method, reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha, the discrimination power and difficulty indices. The results showed that 50% of the items were valid, the instrument’s reliability was moderate with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.60, and only 10% of the items had very good discrimination power, while most (63.4%) were categorized as low to negative. In terms of difficulty, 53.3% of the items were classified as difficult, 20% as moderate, and 26.7% as easy.  These findings indicate that the low student learning outcomes are influenced not only by internal factors but also by the quality of the evaluation instrument.  So, this study not only test the validity and reliability of the test items but also explores how the question construction can affect learning achievements.  This study offers new insights for lecturers to design more accurate instruments that can truly reflect students’ ability, especially in the Fundamentals of Physics II course.
