Abstract

Anterior tooth trauma often occurs in children because children are more active than adults and their coordination and assessment of conditions are not good enough, so they often fall while learning to walk, run, play and exercise. Trauma that occurs to a child's teeth can interfere speech, chewing, aesthetics and the eruption of permanent teeth, thereby disrupting the growth and development of the teeth and jaw. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the approach regarding the first treatment of trauma to primary teeth for parents and children. The choice of Community Service target at RA Al-Muttaqin was due to a request from the school principal as community leader. Education and training activities were carried out on July 27 2023 for a total of 20 teachers and parents. The aim of this activity is to increase knowledge and motivate changes in attitudes and behavior in maintaining oral health and regarding first care for primary tooth trauma. The initial assessment of knowledge and attitudes regarding primary care for trauma to primary teeth and the mouth of teachers was carried out through a pre-test. Counseling on how to maintain healthy teeth and mouth, including dental and oral health problems, prevention methods, as well as first care for primary tooth trauma by the presenter as well as educational videos. As an evaluation, a post test was carried out. The evaluation of the post test results showed an increase in scores. Recommendations for continuing this training activity in other elementary schools, especially for teachers in the school environment.

Abstract

The increasing number of elderly individuals in Indonesia, accompanied by rising health issues, particularly concerning oral health and its association with systemic conditions, is a notable concern. Community service activities in the form of education and training on oral health and its connection to systemic diseases among the elderly at Panti Werdha Wisma Mulia are expected to enhance awareness of the relationship between oral health and systemic conditions among the elderly and foster habits of maintaining oral health. There were 29 participants who were residents of Panti Werdha Wisma Mulia involved. Based on the pre-test and post-test results, there was an observable increase in knowledge among the participants regarding oral health, systemic diseases, and their interrelation. Furthermore, it is hoped that healthy lifestyle patterns, especially those related to oral health, will be established as they are closely linked to the systemic conditions of the participants.

Abstract

Background(s): Oral cancer is one of the most highly prevalent cancers with high mortality rate. Advanced-stage cancer often treated with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy does not differentiate between killing tumor cells and normal cells, leading to a range of side effects. Identifying effective approaches with minimal side effects for cancer treatment remains a significant priority within the medical field. Objective(s) : This review aimed to investigate potential avenues for future research on oral cancer using Z. acanthopodium  Method(s) : References for this article were determined through searches of PubMed, Google Scholar, and official websites of global health organizations. The search terms were “cancer”, “oral cancer”, “anticancer”, “Zanthoxylum acanthopodium”, “apoptosis” from 2014 to 2024. Main finding(s) : Phytochemical compounds found in plants have a significant role in cancer therapies. Z. acanthopodium fruit has been used in anticancer research due to its wide array of bioactive compounds. Previous studies have shown the anticancer properties of Z. acanthopodium DC.  against blood and breast cancer cell lines. Research on its anticancer activity against oral cancer has never been reported. Conclusion(s) : Recent findings confirm Z. acanthopodium as a rich source of bioactive compounds with potential anticancer properties. Further research on its anticancer activity against oral cancer should be promoted.
