Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a valuable lesson and experience for the world community in facing challenges to maintain health and daily life. The psychological and emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family behavior and society in general. Dental and oral health education for children other than mothers is one of the health efforts that can be carried out to increase the knowledge, willingness and skills of children and mothers as a large family in maintaining dental and oral health and hygiene. Explanations need to be given to children and mothers about why and how to maintain healthy teeth and mouth properly. Dental and oral health education delivered in the form of stories through audiovisual media and simulations will be able to create a pleasant learning atmosphere so that it is more effective in attracting attention and facilitating the process of absorbing information by parents, especially children.

Abstract

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) rind contains secondary metabolite compounds which exhibit antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans can cause tissue damage and bone resorption, leading to aggressive periodontitis. Chlorhexidine as golden standard antimicrobial mouthwash can cause tooth staining. There is a need for herbal remedies with fewer side effects as an alternative treatment for periodontitis. This study aims to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacy of C. lanatus rind ethanol extract against A. actinomycetemcomitans. This is an experimental laboratory in vitro with a post-test-only control group design. The antibacterial test was conducted using the plate count method and the antibiofilm test using the microtiter plate biofilm assay method. The samples used were ethanol extract of C. lanatus rind 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%, chlorhexidine 0.2% as positive control, distilled water, and BHI-B as negative control. As a result, extract concentrations from 12.5% to 100% exhibited antibacterial effects on A. actinomycetemcomitans equivalent to chlorhexidine. During the 3-hour incubation period, extract at 25% and 100% concentrations on all incubation times showed a better antibiofilm effect than chlorhexidine. It can be concluded that ethanol extract of C. lanatus rind had the potential as an alternative antibiofilm agent against A. actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Pain in the oral cavity is divided into two types, which are odontogenic pain and non-odontogenic pain. Often, people have difficulty seeking appropriate help for the pain they feel in their oral cavity. The initial response people take to alleviate this pain is by using over-the-counter medications (self-medication). Clinicians frequently encounter individuals who come for treatment having consumed medications irrationally. The actions taken are self-medication without proper indications and incorrect dosages. The background of this community service activity (PkM) is the lack of knowledge among the residents of RW 012 Sunter Agung about the causes of pain in the oral cavity and the risks of inappropriate self-medication for oral pain. This PkM activity aims to help the community practice rational self-medication and to provide knowledge about oral cavity pain. The implementation was carried out offline on 31st january 2024 by giving lectures regarding the causes of oral cavity pain and the risks of inappropriate self-medication, followed by a question and answer session. The results showed that there is knowledge improvement based on the differences in results of pre and post tests carried out.

Abstract

Salah satu bakteri red complex, Porphyromonas gingivalis, dapat membentuk biofilm dan menginisiasi terjadinya periodontitis. Klorheksidin sebagai obat kumur gold standard dalam perawatan periodontitis dapat menyebabkan beberapa efek samping. Dibutuhkan pengobatan berbahan dasar alam seperti semangka (Citrullus lanatus) sebagai pengobatan alternatif di bidang kedokteran gigi. Ekstrak etanol kulit C. lanatus mengandung senyawa aktif seperti saponin, alkaloid, flavonoid, tanin, dan fenolik. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibiofilm ekstrak etanol kulit C. lanatus terhadap P. gingivalis. Metode penelitian ini adalah eksperimental laboratoris in vitro dengan rancangan post-test only control group design. Uji antibakteri menggunakan metode plate count dan uji antibiofilm menggunakan metode microtiter plate biofilm assay. Larutan uji mencakup ekstrak etanol kulit C. lanatus konsentrasi 3,125%, 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, 50%, dan 100%, akuades dan BHI-B (kontrol negatif), dan klorheksidin (kontrol positif). Seluruh konsentrasi ekstrak menunjukkan efek antibiofilm terhadap P. gingivalis. Efek antibiofilm yang lebih efektif daripada klorheksidin ditunjukkan oleh ekstrak 12,5% hingga 100% pada inkubasi 1 jam, 100% pada inkubasi 3 jam, dan 25% hingga 100% pada inkubasi 24 jam. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak etanol kulit C. lanatus memiliki aktivitas antibiofilm terhadap P. gingivalis.

Abstract

Introduction: Porphyromonas gingivalis promotes the growth of periodontal biofilm. Metronidazole is one of the adjunctive therapies for periodontitis. The combination of metronidazole with natural products such as Carica papaya seeds ethanolic extract, which has proven to have antibacterial effects is expected to reduce the side effects caused by metronidazole. Objective: To determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of C. papaya seeds ethanolic extract combined with metronidazole against P. gingivalis. Methods: In vitro laboratory experiment using post-test only control group design. The sample used were 100% C. papaya seeds ethanolic extract, combination of 1000 µg/mL metronidazole with extract 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%, 1000 µg/mL and 2000 µg/mL metronidazole as positive control, and distilled water as negative control. Antibacterial test was performed using plate count method and antibiofilm using microtiter plate biofilm assay method. Results: Carica papaya seeds ethanolic extract alone showed effective antibacterial and antibiofilm effects against P. gingivalis. The combination of 1000 µg/mL metronidazole with extract 6.25% to 100% showed an antibacterial effect equivalent to 2000 µg/mL metronidazole. The combination of 1000 µg/mL metronidazole with 100% extract showed antibiofilm effects in 1, 3, and 24 hours time incubation. The combination of extract and 1000 µg/mL metronidazole demonstrated the best antibiofilm effect during the biofilm maturation phase. Conclusion: The combination of 1000 µg/mL metronidazole with ethanol extract of C. papaya seeds exhibited antibacterial and antibiofilm effects against P. gingivalis.

Abstract

The first five years of childhood are a period or stage of age that determines human quality in adulthood. The critical period of children up to the age of the first two years is a period called the window of opportunity that requires nutritional support, special stimulus, and intervention. The Problem of Lack of Protein Energy (KEP) is one of the main nutritional problems that occur in toddlers and is very influential on the child's growth process. To find out if toddlers are stunted, the World Health Organization (WHO) used the growth standard as a reference by measuring the value of Z (Z score). There are 3 indicators, namely weight for length (WLZ), length for age (LAZ), and weight for age (WAZ). If the child is stunted, then the Z Standard Deviation (SD) score in the LAZ score is less than -2. To measure motoric capability, MSEL: AGS (Mullen Scales of Early Learning: AGD Edition) can be used. This method is used to measure cognition in children by measuring 5 cognitive scales i.e. Gross motor (GM), fine motor, visual capture, receptive language, and expressive language. This stunting condition can affect the cognitive development and brain growth of the child. Cognitive decline can lead to a lack of productivity and can decrease the learning achievement of children, even to adolescence

Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive exploration of periodontitis, a persistent and multifaceted inflammatory condition impacting tooth-supporting structures. The authors investigate the intricate relationship between causative factors, local microbiota, and the host immune response. The disarrayed regulation of cytokines, specifically IL-1, IL-6, and TNF, is highlighted for its pivotal role in triggering or hastening periodontitis onset. The study delves into the host response, emphasizing the delicate equilibrium needed between the immune system and microbiota. The categorization of periodontal pathogenic bacteria, with a focus on the highly pathogenic Phorphyromonas gingivalis and its virulence factors, is explored. Antibiotic efficacy in the context of rising resistance is discussed, encompassing commonly used antibiotics and proposing alternative strategies like plant extracts and bacteriocins. The study advocates for comprehensive therapeutic approaches that integrate antibiotics with alternative methods to effectively address the complex nature of periodontal diseases

Abstract

Allicin is an organosulfur compound commonly found in garlic that has been used as a traditional medicine. It can act as an antibacterial, antivirus, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, and immunomodulator. Studies showed that allicin has potential to be used as a medicine to prevent caries and periodontal bacteria, prevent denture stomatitis, and alleviate oral cancer pain. It is also easy to obtain, affordable, and not toxic. Therefore, allicin has the potential to be used in the field of dentistry.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Staphylococcus aureus merupakan bakteri utama yang bertanggung jawab atas abses periapikal. Amoksisilin merupakan antibiotik yang umum digunakan untuk mengobati bakteri penyebab abses periapikal. Namun, penggunaan yang tidak tepat dapat menyebabkan resistensi. Hal ini membuktikan perlunya pengobatan herbal alternatif yang dikombinasikan dengan antibiotik. Kulit jeruk manis (Citrus sinensis) berpotensi menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri dan biofilm. Tujuan: Mengetahui efek antibakteri dan antibiofilm kombinasi ekstrak etanol kulit C. sinensis dengan amoksisilin terhadap pertumbuhan S.aureus. Metode: Eksperimental laboratoris secara in vitro dengan rancangan post test only control group design. Larutan uji yang digunakan adalah ekstrak etanol kulit C. sinensis 100%, kombinasi 600µg/mL amoksisilin dengan ekstrak konsentrasi 3,125%, 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, 50%, dan 100%, 600µg/mL amoksisilin, 1.200µg/mL amoksisilin sebagai kontrol positif, dan akuades sebagai kontrol negatif. Uji antibakteri dilakukan dengan metode plate count, dan uji antibiofilm dilakukan dengan metode microtiter plate biofilm assay. Hasil: Kombinasi ekstrak etanol kulit C. sinensis dengan amoksisilin dimulai pada konsentrasi 3,125% mampu menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus. Hasil uji antibiofilm menunjukkan bahwa efek antibiofilm bekerja paling efektif pada tahap pembentukan pelikel. Pada masa inkubasi 1 jam, konsentrasi 3,125% dan 6,25% secara statistik menunjukkan perbedaan bermakna dengan kontrol negatif. Ekstrak 100% secara tunggal dapat menghambat pertumbuhan biofilm S. aureus. Amoksisilin secara tunggal sebagai kontrol positif tidak memiliki efek antibiofilm. Simpulan: Kombinasi ekstrak etanol kulit C. sinensis dengan amoksisilin memiliki efek antibakteri dan antibiofilm terhadap S. aureus.
