Abstract

The appropriate planning of orthodontic therapy with regard to appliance selection, information on the patient’s stage ofsomatic maturity is needed. Hand wrist maturity has been shown to be closely related with the pubertal growth spurt;therefore hand wrist radiographs have been recommended for indirect assesment of somatic maturity. However, theroutine use of hand wrist radiographs has lately been questioned from the radiation-hygiene, safety point of view. In arecent cephalometric investigation, it was found that the frontal sinus development showed a growth rhythm similar to thebody height development. Furthermore, it has been proposed that frontal sinus enlargement follows general bone growthbut little evidence has been shown. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between frontal sinusdepth and hand wrist maturity in Deuteromalayid group aged 7 to 17 years. A cross sectional study was conducted in 138subjects (69 males, 69 females). The frontal sinus depth and hand wrist maturation was determined using Ertürk’s andFishman’s method, respectively. The result of this study showed that there was a moderate correlation between frontalsinus depth and hand wrist maturity in males (r = 0.608) and females (r = 0.647). From this study, it can be concludedthat the usage of frontal sinus depth to substitute hand wrist maturity to assess the skeletal maturity is not appropriateenough.

Abstract

Background: Growth and development of craniofacial is a must known knowledge for dentists, especially orthodontists. The mandible as part of the craniofacial bone is an important target in orthodontic treatment, especially dentofacial orthopedics during puberty. Optimal results from orthodontic treatment can be achieved through the diagnosis, treatment plan and timing of appropriate treatment interventions, therefore it is important to know the timing of the appropriate intervention to the mandible. The aim of this study is to analyze the profile changes in mandibular dimention during the puberty phase. Materials and Methods: This is an analytical observational study with 120 cephalograph lateral samples of children aged 8-18 years old. Anova test was conducted to analyze differences in mean mandibular growth, as ramus height (Co-Go), corpus length (Go-Gn) and total mandiblar length (Co-Gn) between puberty phases determined by the Cervical Vertebral Maturation System (CVMS) method. Results: There were no Co-Go differences between pre-peak and peak phases (p = 0.314) and peak and post-peak phases (p = 0.164). There were differences in Go-Gn (p = 0,000) and Co-Gn (p = 0.025) between the pre-peak and peak phases. Conclusion: There are differences in mandibular growth profile, especially Go-Gn and Co-Gn between the pre-peak and peak stages of puberty.

Abstract

Maintaining dental and oral health is one of the good habits that must be taught as early as possible, especially in junior high school children. This is because junior high school children are more aware and understand the importance of maintaining health than elementary schoolchildren. As we all know, there is currently a Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, staying at home is considered not to be applied forever. A number of countries have begun to relax policies related to the mobility of their citizens, however, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid19 continues to threaten. So, a new lifestyle or new normal will be implemented. The target of the training on maintaining oral health this time is the teachers and students of SMP Tri Ratna. Provide education to students and teachers about the importance of maintaining oral health in the new normal era. The counseling was carried out using a webinar (web seminar), held on February 22, 2022, followed by 132 participants from Tri Ratna Middle School. Participants' knowledge was assessed by pre-test and post-test using Google Form. From the results of the pre-test and post-test obtained, it can be seen that there is an increase in the knowledge of the extension participants by 17.22% (the mean pretest value is 42.78+14.23 and the average posttest value is 60.19+16.87) with an increase in the percentage of correct answers from the prepost test ranging from from 2.63%-36.63%

Abstract

Pain in the oral cavity is divided into two types, which are odontogenic pain and non-odontogenic pain. Often, people have difficulty seeking appropriate help for the pain they feel in their oral cavity. The initial response people take to alleviate this pain is by using over-the-counter medications (self-medication). Clinicians frequently encounter individuals who come for treatment having consumed medications irrationally. The actions taken are self-medication without proper indications and incorrect dosages. The background of this community service activity (PkM) is the lack of knowledge among the residents of RW 012 Sunter Agung about the causes of pain in the oral cavity and the risks of inappropriate self-medication for oral pain. This PkM activity aims to help the community practice rational self-medication and to provide knowledge about oral cavity pain. The implementation was carried out offline on 31st january 2024 by giving lectures regarding the causes of oral cavity pain and the risks of inappropriate self-medication, followed by a question and answer session. The results showed that there is knowledge improvement based on the differences in results of pre and post tests carried out.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: One of the treatments for malocclusion, especially class II and class III cases often associated with maxillary constriction, is Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME). Successful RME treatment requires evaluation of the Midpalatal Suture Maturation Stage using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). However, CBCT entails increased cost and radiation exposure. Meanwhile, the Cervical Vertebrae Maturation Stage serves as a biological indicator of skeletal growth. This study aims to analyze the correlation between Cervical Vertebrae Maturation Stage and Midpalatal Suture Maturation Stage. Methods: This study used an observational analytic research design with a consecutive sampling method. Secondary data of cephalogram and CBCT images of 47 subjects aged 8–19 years were analyzed. CVMS was assessed using the Baccetti method, while MPSMS was evaluated using the Angelieri method. The Spearman rank correlation test was applied to assess the correlation between the two variables. This research was conducted at the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Trisakti University from September to December 2024. Results: A distribution of MPSMS stages (A to E) corresponding to increasing CVMS stages (CS1 to CS5). Spearman correlation analysis revealed a strong and highly significant positive correlation between CVMS and MPSMS, with a correlation coefficient of r=0.640 and p=0.001, consistent across the entire sample and within gender subgroups. Conclusion: There is a strong correlation between CVMS and MPSMS in the population aged 8–19 years.KEYWORDS Cervical vertebrae, midpalatal suture, maturation stage, palatal expansion technique
