Abstract

Every student has different needs in learning English, including their needs in the workplace. This research aims to determine the existence of English language skills of students in Food and Beverage Service (FBS) department, identify their English language needs in the workplace, and design English language teaching materials based on their needs in the workplace. This research is a quantitative study by using survey methods. The data collection techniques used were questionnaires, interviews and observations by taking the FBS students who had carried out internship program as the population while the sampling technique used was purposive and accidental sampling by involving 143 respondents. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that 1) The existence of English language skills of students in FBS department is at the elementary and pre-intermediate levels, namely 73.42% and speaking skills are the skill they have mastered the most as well as the most difficult skill. And vocabulary and pronunciation are two language components they considered as the most difficult to be understood, 2) The English language needs of FBS students in the workplace show that speaking skills are the most needed skill, namely 76.92%, where all outlets in the FBS departments require language mastery English, namely 68.53%, especially in the restaurant section around 20.98%, 3) English teaching materials designed should be based on students' needs in the workplace by using a priority scale on the learning materials and activities which described in the form of learning plans.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kapasitas pengelola glamping dan camping ground di Malino, Kabupaten Gowa, melalui pelatihan pelayanan prima berbasis standar housekeeping dan hospitality. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama tiga hari, 16–18 Mei 2025, di D’Luna Camping Ground, dengan melibatkan 35 peserta yang terdiri dari pengelola akomodasi wisata dan anggota Pokdarwis. Metode pelatihan meliputi sesi teori selama 8 jam, praktik lapangan 8 jam, serta evaluasi menggunakan pre-test dan umpan balik peserta. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas peserta merasa materi mudah dipahami dan relevan dengan kebutuhan peserta, serta praktik lapangan sangat membantu dalam penguasaan keterampilan. Kegiatan ini mendapat respon positif dan dinilai efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman operasional glamping. Rekomendasi ke depan adalah perlunya pendampingan lanjutan, pelatihan tematik lebih mendalam, serta penyelenggaraan kegiatan serupa pada waktu high season agar lebih kontekstual dan implementatif

Abstract

This study aims to identify the major writing difficulties faced by first-year students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts at Universitas Negeri Makassar. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving the analysis of students’ written assignments and in-depth interviews with 15 purposively selected participants. The findings reveal four key areas of difficulty: grammatical and sentence structure errors, limited vocabulary and inappropriate word choice, poor paragraph organization, and a lack of coherence and cohesion. In addition to these surface-level issues, the study uncovered several underlying contributing factors, including limited exposure to English outside the classroom, inadequate writing instruction, first language interference, emotional barriers, and excessive reliance on translation technology. These results indicate that students’ writing challenges are not solely rooted in linguistic deficiencies but are shaped by a broader ecosystem of influences that impact their development as academic writers. A deeper understanding of these factors is essential for designing more effective pedagogical interventions—ones that address both technical errors and the developmental needs of EFL learners.

Abstract

This study addresses the challenge of improving English-speaking skills among Room Division students at Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, crucial for effective communication in hospitality roles. Many students struggle with fluency and confidence due to limited practice and language anxiety. To bridge this gap, the English Matriculation Program (EMP) was developed, integrating Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to enhance practical language skills. A pre-experimental design was employed with 60 students, who underwent pre- and post-tests, alongside a questionnaire to gather perceptions of the program’s impact. Key CLT elements—social engagement, focus on meaning, and critical thinking—were emphasized, with tasks including role-plays and problem-solving exercises that mimic real-world communication. Structural equation modelling and paired t-tests indicated a significant improvement in speaking performance, with average scores rising from 39.10 to 62.87. Questionnaire results reinforced these findings, with students reporting increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and better fluency. Overall, CLT’s practical, student-centred approach effectively enhances English proficiency, preparing students for successful communication in the hospitality industry.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas masyarakat Desa Sangbua, Toraja Utara, dalam inventarisasi produk wisata berbasis digital menggunakan platform Google Workspace. Kegiatan pelatihan yang melibatkan perangkat desa, kelompok sadar wisata (Pokdarwis), pelaku UMKM, dan pemuda desa dilaksanakan selama dua hari dengan metode ceramah, simulasi, diskusi, dan praktik lapangan. Hasilnya, peserta mampu menginventarisasi dan mendokumentasikan 12 lokasi wisata alam, 5 lokasi wisata budaya, 15 pelaku UMKM, dan 3 event budaya secara sistematis dan digital. Data tersebut berhasil diolah dan dipetakan menggunakan Google Maps, membangun sistem manajemen informasi wisata yang partisipatif dan kolaboratif. Pengabdian ini meningkatkan literasi digital dan kesadaran masyarakat terhadap pentingnya dokumentasi wisata sebagai dasar pengembangan promosi dan pengelolaan destinasi. Kontribusi kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat memperkuat daya saing desa wisata secara berkelanjutan dan mendukung pengembangan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat yang adaptif terhadap kemajuan teknologi informasi.
