Abstract

This research explores the role of leadership styles in managing power and conflict in the university environment. We employed a qualitative approach by interviewing 25 respondents from various faculties. The results indicate two categories of leadership based on Least Preference Co-worker (LPC) scores, namely High LPC person and Low LPC person. Transformational and transactional leadership styles significantly moderate power dynamics and manage conflict. Organizational factors such as structure, policies, and culture also play a crucial role in power dynamics and conflict management. In conclusion, it is essential to enhance awareness and training for university leaders to implement effective leadership approaches and improve organizational factors to create an environment conducive to collaboration and constructive conflict resolution.

Abstract

Poetry translation is a complex and challenging process, as poetry is a rich and unique form of language that often uses poetic words and sentence structures. This study aims to analyze the translation methods used by students of English Language Education Study Program in translating poetry from Indonesian to English. This research uses a case study method involving 15 students of English Education in North Sumatera who are currently undergoing a translation course. The research data were obtained through analyzing the poetry translations produced by the students. The results showed that the students used various translation methods, but the most commonly used method was literal translation. Students also managed to maintain the meaning of the original poem in their translations, but they sometimes struggled to convey the emotional and aesthetic nuances of the poem. Based on the results of the study, the researcher concludes that PBI students still need to develop their skills in translating poetry. This can be done by providing more in-depth learning about the theory and practice of poetry translation, as well as providing opportunities for students to practice translating poetry with guidance from experienced lecturers.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore how students perceive the use of phonology-based instruction to enhance English speaking fluency. The study was done through the qualitative method using a Google form to collect the data. The results show that 40% of respondents responded with a neutral opinion, 20% of respondents agreed, 20% strongly agreed, 13.3% disagreed and 6.7% strongly disagreed. The results also show that most of the respondents agreed that understanding phonology is important in developing English-speaking skills. However, there is still a lack of confidence in speaking English with the use of phonology-based instruction. According to the results, it is evident that phonology-based instruction can assist in improving English speaking fluency. Suggestions were given in terms of having more resources to support using phonology-based instruction and having teachers assist learners in grasping the concept of phonology more easily.
