Abstract

AbstractThe main objective of this study is to develop a research framework for strategic management researchers to develop sound strategic business model innovation that has practical implication on how to innovate firms' business models. The research identifies factors attributing to effective business model: business strategies, type of business model innovations and types of resource configurations. This study framework can guide leaders and managers to acquire the appropriate capability of coping with business model dynamics as well as major transformation that arises from business model innovations. In addition, the study provides insightful contributions in explaining the influence of business strategies (defender, prospector, analyzer) on business model innovations and firm resource configuration, and their influence on business model effectiveness. This study model is valuable considering the limited amount of empirical work previously done on the topic in question. Based on a case-study research survey in seven companies in Indonesia that took place in 2011-2012, we have drawn first conclusions expressed in four research propositions that deem further tests. One case (Food Co.) is highlighted for the description of the study to show some presence and absence of alignment between business strategy, business model innovation, and resource configuration. Keywords: effective business model, business model innovation, business strategy, defender, prospector, analyzer, resource configurationAbstrakTujuan studi ini adalah mengembangkan rerangka penelitian strategi dan inovasi model bisnis. Abstract

Global warming is one of the most pressing environmental issues of the 21st century, with far-reaching impacts ranging from extreme climate change to threats to biodiversity and human life. The increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere and oceans, driven by human activities, particularly greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, exacerbates this situation. Negative effects such as polar ice melting, rising sea levels, and ecosystem disruptions threaten the survival of many species. Growing global awareness of the importance of understanding and addressing global warming has led to various initiatives, including scientific competitions focused on global warming. These activities aim to educate the public and promote innovation in finding sustainable solutions to this environmental problem. In these competitions, the role of judges is crucial in evaluating the quality and relevance of the scientific works submitted by participants. Through community engagement carried out by the Management Study Program of Universitas Bunda Mulia in collaboration with SMA Kristen Tunas Bangsa Sunter Jakarta Utara, this competition successfully inspired and nurtured young generations in facing the challenges of global warming. The event included presentations, discussions, and Q&A sessions aimed at developing creative ideas and making a real contribution to global efforts in combating global warming.

Abstract

Community service provides various opportunities for academicians to disseminate knowledge and contribute to the development of society. In August 2024, the UBM Management Program contributed to community service at Kesatuan High School in Bogor, West Java, in a workshop on branding strategy. The growing attention towards developing entrepreneurial capabilities at a young age has motivated educators to incorporate entrepreneurship development programs in schools. Kesatuan High School is one of the high schools that included a creative entrepreneur development program in its 10th-grade curriculum. The community service in this article adopts several research methods, including a literature review and a combined qualitative-quantitative analysis. The lecturer began the workshop by explaining Schumpeter’s entrepreneurship theory as the foundational concept of the role of entrepreneurs. Creative entrepreneurs are essential to be able to solve management problems, combine resources and processes in different manners to build competitive advantage. Summarizing from various sources, students learned that products refer to tangible attributes, while brands refer to the intangible attributes offered by the business. Based on the descriptive analyses, the feedback survey found that the overall score for the workshop was 3.075 out of 4.00, which demonstrated positive feedback from workshop participants. Regardless of the slight variances between the feedback components, the scores indicate that the workshop was delivered optimally and in line with the predetermined objectives. Hence, this community service exemplifies an alternative model for faculty members to share knowledge and contribute to improving the learning experience as well as advancing high school education

Abstract

As prominent members of the developing digital entrepreneurial ecosystem in Indonesia, Micro-Small Enterprises (MSEs) should adapt and make the most out of the ubiquitous digital platforms available for managing business activities. Especially for those in the food business, digital marketing has played an important role to the development of MSEs performances. This research examines how spicy food MSEs are able to flourish without a formal marketing arm embedded in the organization. In particular, the main objectives of the study include to assess the role of digital marketing for MSEs and provide evidence on how adopting digital marketing would enhance entrepreneurial capabilities. Method employed for this study is a combination of three components, which are, preliminary desktop research, data mining, and descriptive analyses. Complementing quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources was intended to overcome the challenges of obtaining MSE data by taking advantage of online databases and make use of available resources. Ratings provided by the users are determined to be representations for the MSEs performance, which are made available for the public. In addition, data shows the ability for MSEs to expand markets and access more customers using e-commerce platforms. Analyses presented in this article provide evidence of the vital role of adopting digital platforms in MSE marketing activities. Synergizing internal capabilities with the online ratings could snowball into obtaining good performance and sustainable competitive advantage. From an entrepreneurial point of view, analyses showed how digital marketing is the ultimate collaborative partner necessary for success.

Abstract

As the F&B industry plays an important role in attaining national food resilience, maintaining sustainably good performance is a heightened concern for all stakeholders. Consequently, F&B companies are heavily scrutinized by investors who commonly use firm value as a business performance indicator. In this study, the authors intend to analyze the influence of liquidity, profitability, and capital structure ratios on firm value in the F&B subsector listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2014 to 2024. With a sample of 33 firms and 10-year ratios for a total of 363 data points, the research method combines descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis using Smart PLS 4. The research results show a significant relationship between the profitability variable and firm value. On the contrary, capital structure and liquidity were found not to have any effects on firm value. For practitioners, this research provided evidence on the centrality of profitability not only to attain high firm value but also to portray a positive signal to the public and convince investors. In addition, for investors, this research provides recommendations on several factors to consider when investing capital.

Abstract

As one of the pillars of higher education institutions, community services provide opportunities for university lecturers to contribute and acquire knowledge. The main objective of this study is to provide detailed descriptions on how university-school collaborations as a mode for promoting engaged scholarship and improve students’ learning experiences. This article discusses university community service activities at two private high schools in the Jakarta area. The two high schools invited university faculty members as jurors to assess the students’ projects, which determined their final grades. Observations found that having university faculty members present to give student scores enabled the schools to optimize the mechanisms in place that defined graduation requirements. As jurors, the faculty members provided objective, science-based assessments and the necessary feedback for the students. In addition to interacting with university-level teachers, presenting in front of academic jurors allowed the students to gain perspectives on related topics and make sound improvements to their projects. Consequently, the schools can optimize their curriculum-based activities that not only extend the learning experiences of the students but also provide long-term improvements to the overall quality of education.

Current views on sustainability have led to the requirements for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) elements in published company reports as the global standard. This article encompasses the community service at Alfamart, which was organized as a Participatory Action Research (PAR) on improving ESG reporting conducted from July to December 2024. The main objective of this study was to review the existing reporting process to design the course of action required for improvements. Upon completion of the research, this article serves as a published documentation of the workshop conducted on 14th October 2024 as part of this community service. The qualitative method designed for this PAR consisted of data collection and content analysis of the ESG reports, confirmations through workshop discussions, and reporting of recommended actions. As discussed during the workshop, there were discrepancies between the researchers’ and the report makers’ perceptions due to the inconsistent reporting style of the disclosed information in the reports. Alfamart’s annual reports were produced in different ways, based on what kind and how much information was collected, which led to the distinct reporting styles. Therefore, the workshop facilitated a learning process so that Alfamart was able to set action plans to improve the reporting process and, in turn, require each division to improve its own data and information management. Eventually, this PAR was necessary for optimizing Alfamart’s ESG representation in the published reports.
