Abstract

The beginning of dawn prayer is still a hot debate among Falak practitioners and astronomers in Indonesia. The Adzan marks the start of dawn prayer time were too fast because the sky is still dark and not as mentioned in the Hadith, which is when the sky gets brighter.  This study aims to prove the change from the night sky to the bright sky using a photometer called SQM with a recording device based on Raspberry Pi so that it can be used easily, quickly, lightly, and also safe to be left in a location during the data collection process. The results obtained in this study show that SQM on Raspberry can function properly, the dawn time at SQM readings using Raspberry Pi shows that the Sun is in the dip range of 15-18 degrees below the horizon when the sky changes brighter occurred

Abstract

Hilal observation has already undergone a very significant development of techniques. From daytime observations, up to the uses of various instruments that can support the success of observations. One of the routine activities carried out by the Falak Science Observatory of Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra is daytime hilal observation.  The hilal observation conducted by OIF UMSU uses an infrared filter instrument that can transmit light at infrared wavelengths and filter light at other wavelengths. This research tries to compare the contrast of daylight hilal images taken using filters and not using filters. The results obtained from the experiments carried out resulted in a contrast value using an infrared filter is 129% using Weber contrast analysis, and 4% using Michelson contrast analysis.

Abstract

The use of robotic telescopes in the practice of observing the Hilal in Indonesia is quite widespread. One type of telescope that is widely used by observers is the iOptron Cube. Telescopes with an alt-azimuth mounting type with GPS features can be used easily by observers who observes Hilal on a portable basis. The effectiveness of using this telescope needs to be studied more deeply because pointing accuracy and alt-azimuth tracking mounting capabilities require good computational ability to obtain the expected results. After being tested with two configurations (narrow and wide field of view) and seeing the various supporting features embedded in this telescope, it can be concluded that the iOptron Cube is quite effective for observing Hilal.

Abstract

An analysis of light pollution has been carried out based on the reading of a photometercalled Sky Quality Meter (SQM) which shows the level of light pollution expressed in the MPASSreference. This study aims to determine the increase in light pollution in the city of Medan and to findout the implications for astronomical observations there. Light pollution distribution maps data andradiance quantity data are obtained through a platform that presents light pollution mapping and isfurther analyzed with literacy studies. Its Found that the radiance value is proportional to the level ofpollution and is influenced by the population of civilization in Medan from 2017 to 2022 soastronomical observations and phenomena are also decreasing to be visible.

Abstract

The constellations originating from Arab civilization were still very little known and studied. Al-Ṣūfi's book, al-Kawākib al-Thābitah, contains the record of coordinates, approximate magnitudes, and star details with graphs. This study examines the difference of stars in the sample constellation, compares the visual appearance of the illustrations on the Stellarium software, and studies the differences between the western constellations and the Arabic constellations. The result shows some differences between the constellations of the almagest and al-Kawākib al-Thābitah in the number of stars in the sample constellations, differences in illustrations from the orientalized figures, and the star magnitude in al-Ṣūfi's work that similar to Ptolemy's works. Al-Sufi identified a total of 134 additional stars, 65 stars located in the Northern constellations, 41 stars in the Zodiac constellation, and 28 stars in the Southern constellations. His observations showed that the magnitude values of 520 stars out of a total of 1022 stars were identical between al-Sufi and Ptolemy. Stellarium provides an excellent visual presentation of the Arabic constellations according to Al-Sufi's book that shows position, illustration, and mapping in the night sky.

Abstract

The technology used in hilal observation continues to develop. Most recently, using filters has become one of the options in hilal observation. Several filters can be used, ranging from low wavelengths like ultraviolet to high wavelengths like infrared. In some ideas, there needs to be a limit to the use of filters, the human eye's ability as a benchmark for the filter used. The human eye is sensitive to light with visual wavelengths, and one type of filter in this range is the LRGB filter. In this study, hilal observations were made on four filters and compared to find out which filter is better at increasing the contrast of hilal against the background. Using Michelson and Weber contrast as the definition of contrast to determine the comparison of the brightness value of the object with the background.  From the observations made, it is found that the R filter will produce higher contrast values at low altitudes, followed by the L, G, and B filters. However, at higher altitudes, the contrast values of the L and R filters are similar, while the G and B filters remain low.

Abstract

Al-Qur’an as the holy book of Muslims contains many themes of discussion in it, ranging from faith, sharia, stories and science. One of the discussions related to science is assembling celestial bodies. Buruj is one of the celestial bodies mentioned in Al-Qur'an, in total there are three verses that discuss the buruj as a celestial body. In some literature, buruj is interpreted as a big star, a big planet, a constellation, and a set of stars. From these meanings, a common thread can be drawn that the buruj is understood as a set of stars. In the previous research used an interpretive perspective, this paper tries to understand the meaning of the buruj more broadly by using the perspective of astronomical observations conducted by the OIF UMSU team. From the observations, it is known that there are several types of sets of stars, such as constellations, open star clusters, globular star clusters, and galaxies. So that the meaning of the buruj in the Qur'an as a celestial body is a set of beautiful stars that humans can observe, not limited to the constellations which number 12, 48 or 88.
