Abstract

Reef fish utilisation due to high demand has increased to over exploited in the Republic of Indonesia’s Fisheries Management Area (FMA-RI) 714. Lutjanus gibbus is one of the target reef fish species that is commonly fished because it’s high commercial value. This study aimed to analyse the diversity of genetic, variation of population characters and connectivity of L.gibbus in the conservation areas and fishing areas in Ambalau, Banda dan Kei in FMA-RI 714 using DNA barcoding. The reconstruction of phylogenetic trees from three populations of L. gibbus has shown the close genetic supported by the acquisition of small genetic distances with a range from 0.000 to 0.0164. The highest genetic diversity (Hd) ranges from 0.9 to 1.0 and the nucleotide diversity ranges from (π) 0.00325-0.00921, indicate the population of Ambalau Island, Banda and Kei has a high genetic diversity. Analysis of Fixation index (Fst) ranges from -0.20370 to -0.06965, the negative value indicates that the three population did not experience genetic differentiation due to gene flow. This causes close relationships between populations, so that due gene variation between population becomes low and mixing occurs population. L.gibbus connectivity shows the presence of gene flow in all three of these population. ABSTRAK Akibat tingginya permintaan maka tingkat pemanfaatan ikan karang menjadi over exploited di WPP-NRI 714. Abstract

Studies on marine gastropod diversity as an indicator of water quality in Maluku province are rare. The research objectives are to study marine gastropod species composition and analyze its ecological density, abundance and frequency of occurrence, as well as to analyze an ecological index at the intertidal zone of Rutong village, Ambon Island, Maluku. 53 species of marine gastropods found in the intertidal zone, belonging to 41 genera, 22 families and 6 order. Muricidae, Neritidae and Tegulidae were marine gastropod families with higher ecological density and abundance. Some dominant species known as key species in this region were Nerita spatula, Rochia nilotica, Tenguella granulate, Nassarius pullus, Clypeomorus battilariaeformis, Monetaria annulus, Monodonta calanifera and Conus miles. Generally, the species of marine gastropods in this study area have limited distribution. Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H`) of marine gastropods is in a medium to high category, which varies between 1.56 to 3.46. Meanwhile, Pielou’s evenness index (J`) is in the stable category, in which the value was from 0.61 to 0.95 Whereas, Simpson's dominance index varied from 0.05-0.30, which is in the low category. The coastal water of Rutong village can be categorized as moderately polluted waters to unpolluted waters.

Abstract

The coastal waters of Ambon Island have quite diverse ecosystems that allow for the presence of various organisms, one of which is gastropods. This study aims to analyze the correlation of some water parameters and Pb in sediment to the diversity of gastropods. The research method was carried out by observing the density, water quality parameters, and Pb metal in sediments. Water parameters were measured in situ and analyzed in the laboratory. The distribution of gastropods was analyzed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). At the same time, the correlation analysis was carried out using the Pearson correlation approach using SPSS v.16. The results showed that the types of gastropods with the highest density in the waters of Ambon Island were Terebralia sulcata, Hebra corticata, and Nerita patula. While the species with the lowest density value were Nassarius olivaceus, Polinices didyma, Lunella cinerea, Conus eburneus, Cypraea isabella, Vexillum plicarium, and Columbella scripta. The Shannon-Wienner Diversity Index ranges from 1.253–2.622, and the diversity index ranges from 0.083-0.207. It was included in the low category caused by the disturbance of water pollution and Pb metal in sediments. Meanwhile, the dominance index ranged from 0.098 to 0.511 indicating species dominance at several observation stations. The waters' physical-chemical parameters strongly correlating with gastropod diversity are DO and Pb, with respective correlation values of r = 0.656 and r = -0.785.

Abstract

Abstract

People's awareness of the marine environment should be started by the student in Elementary School. The public service program was conducted to increase student knowledge of the marine environment and the fisheries resources and also to protect that. This program consists of giving a lecture,  discussion, and evaluation to the student of SD Negeri 2 Oma, Haruku Island Regency, Central Maluku. The topics consist of the marine environment and the importance of this environment, types of the shore, marine mollusc resources (definition and clasification), economically important molluscs, marine Gastropoda which consumed by local people, and how to protect the marine environment and its resources. Based on the evaluation, student knowledge increased from <30% before socialization to >90% after socialization. It means that education processes for the elementary student about the problems of the marine environment and its resources increase significantly, and need more information on other marine resource.
