Abstract

Background: Persistence is the most common dental disease faced by Indonesian people, especially children aged 6-12 years. Because at that age there is a transition period from baby teeth to permanent teeth which is often called the critical period. Seeing the high rates of dental and oral disease, one of which is influenced by parental behavioral factors which play a role in the growth of children's teeth, especially during the mixed dentition period which has an impact on the occurrence of persistence cases. This study aims to determine the effect of parental behavior on tooth persistence in students of SD Inpres Unggulan BTN Pemda. Method : The research method used is cross sectional. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The sample in this study were 36 parents of students whose children had persistent teeth which were taken using a purposive sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. This research was conducted at the Pemda BTN Superior Inpres Elementary School in January-March 2023. Results: Data analysis was carried out using a bivariate test with the chi square and kruskal wallis methods. Based on the Chi Square test obtained p 0.001 with a correlation coefficient of 0.05. Based on the results of the Kruskal Wallis test, the category mean rank was 35.00 with a p-value of 0.001 (p <0.05). The results of statistical tests in this study found that parental behavior based on aspects of knowledge, attitudes and actions had an impact on persistent tooth cases. Conclusion: Lack of knowledge has an impact on parental ignorance as a trigger for persistence. Attitude has less impact on parents who are unable to respond to cases of persistent teeth. Good behavior impacts a parent's ability to prevent and treat persistent teeth.  Keywords : Parental behavior, tooth persistence

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need to explore more natural alternatives in assessing the level of oral hygiene. Commonly used disclosing solutions often contain chemicals, prompting this study to evaluate the potential of dragon fruit solution as a safer and more economical option. The research aims to compare the effectiveness of dragon fruit solution with disclosing solution in measuring the PHP-M Index among students of the Diploma IV Dental Therapy Program at Poltekkes Kemenkes Makassar. The research method involved 21 subjects who were treated with dragon fruit solution and disclosing solution, and their plaque indices were measured. The results indicated that the dragon fruit solution yielded comparable outcomes to the disclosing solution, with the majority of respondents falling into the 'moderate' criteria. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between the two treatments. In conclusion, dragon fruit solution has the potential to replace disclosing solution in measuring the PHP-M Index, offering a natural and affordable alternative. These findings provide a basis for considering more environmentally friendly alternatives in dental hygiene assessment practices. Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities, known as mentally handicapped children, have physical and emotional disorders that distinguish them from typical children. Oral hygiene among intellectually disabled children tends to be lower compared to children without disabilities. This is due to their condition of below-average intelligence and difficulties in adapting adaptively, which affects their oral health maintenance behavior. Oral health maintenance behavior is one of the factors that can influence oral hygiene. This research aims to determine the relationship between oral health maintenance behavior and oral hygiene in intellectually disabled children at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar. This study is a quantitative research using an observational approach with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling, resulting in a sample of 30 individuals who were then assessed for oral hygiene levels using the OHI-S and oral health maintenance behavior using a questionnaire. Data analysis used the Mann-Whitney test to determine differences between the two variables based on gender and Spearman correlation to determine the relationship between the variables. The results of the study showed that oral health maintenance behavior in female students is better than in male students, and the OHI-S scores of female students are better than those of male students. However, the significant difference was only in the behavior variable. Overall, there is a significant relationship between behavior and OHI-S in intellectually disabled children at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar.

Abstract

One way to overcome dental and oral health problems in elementary school children is to involve government programs, namely the School Dental Health Business Program (UKGS) in every elementary school. This study aims to explore the role of sports teachers in the implementation of UKGS and its impact on the incidence of dental caries. This research uses quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data was collected through def-t and DMF-T examinations to assess the status of dental caries in students, as well as closed interviews with sports teachers to understand their role in implementing UKGS. The research sample consisted of 66 grade 5 students and sports teachers. The main aim of the research is to identify the role of sports teachers in implementing UKGS and to determine the dental caries status of students. The examination results indicated that the dental caries status of grade 5 students was in the very low category. Sports teachers in the UKGS program act as educators, motivators and facilitators in managing dental caries status in schools, which contributes to achieving effective implementation of the UKGS program. It is hoped that good implementation of the UKGS program can reduce the risk of dental caries in students, thereby reducing the level of dental caries in children at school.  Keywords: Sports teacher; UKGS; dental caries

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems in Indonesia remain quite prevalent, with 57% of the population experiencing issues, yet only 10.2% of them receive treatment. One of the most commonly found problems is malocclusion, which refers to the misalignment of teeth and affects around 80% of the population. This condition negatively impacts daily activities, including psychosocial aspects. Previous studies have shown that malocclusion can affect self-confidence and appearance, thereby requiring special attention in orthodontic care. This study is an analytical observational research, in which the researcher directly observes subjects to identify relationships between two or more variables without administering treatment or intervention. The research design used is cross-sectional, which assesses the relationship between independent and dependent variables at a specific point in time without follow-up. The results of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test indicated that there is no significant relationship between malocclusion and psychosocial conditions among adolescents at SMA Negeri 9 Makassar (p = 0.149). Most respondents had Class I malocclusion, commonly in the form of crowding, but due to low levels of knowledge and awareness, they were less conscious of the social impact of their condition. In line with previous findings, this study concludes that malocclusion does not have a significant impact on adolescents’ psychological condition. All adolescents identified with malocclusion at the school were female, who also showed the highest prevalence.

Abstract

Effective dental and oral health education media can have a significant positive impact, such as print media like flipcharts and video media. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using flipchart and video media in improving elementary school children's knowledge of dental health. This research employs a quantitative approach using a one-group pretest-posttest design with a pre-experimental method. The research sample consisted of 250 students from Tidung State Elementary School, selected through a random sampling technique using the lottery method, and divided into two groups: one using flipchart media and the other using video media. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that after the intervention, video media had a greater impact than flipchart media, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. This indicates that video media is more effective than flipchart media in increasing knowledge about dental and oral health.
